All-over-the-map British art rock, with about 50% of it leaning towards Madchester dance rock, and the other 50% covering everything else: 70s prog/space rock, shoegaze, Beta Band-like experimentation, krautrock, etc etc. If you like Primal Scream, you should like this. This release is 2 discs that combines their debut album from last year, an EP from earlier this year, and about an album's worth of unreleased/new tracks. It's long and it's messy and it's highly recommended.

Glad to see this getting some love, and even more glad to see that Paul ruled it eligible for the albums list. It'll be pretty damn high on mine.

Both very good albums. I havn't actually listened to Zozobra in a long while, I probably should.

I didn't hear much from you guys about Architects. I take it you liked it?

Very much so. It was back in January, though, and it literally got buried under hundreds of CDs. I should dig it out.

The Rotting Christ is excellent, too.
MattDrufke
Don't know if it's been mentioned here but Ike Reiily's We Belong To The Staggering Evening is one of the better pop-rock albums in a long time.
velocity
If nothing else this voting is reacquainting me w/ some good music I'd lost sight of. For one, that Rotting Christ is much more appealing now than it was a few months ago.

Also bummed to realize that Cornelius was released 10.30.06.

Question:

Is there anybody here who likes pop/rock music and has not heard either of these albums?

Asher Ford
Have not heard the Mark Sultan.

Must remember to buy myself a vinyl copy of What Is?!. That artwork is great.

i'm not sure what it means that Paves is way more into 60's nostalgia than the rest of us.

I'm also way more into quality songwriting than most people are.

Serious hot fire. From a review in an alt-weekly here (http://www.eastbayexpress.com/music/new_ed...tent?oid=569366):

QUOTE
Discovered by the legendary Too $hort and headed by twenty-year-old production wiz (and onetime competitive skateboarder) Young L, the Pack is a boy band with more grit than glitz. They're pop worthy €” even when rapping about freaky-deaky "Booty Bounce Boppers" €” and have considerably more urban credibility than Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees or 'N Sync (who were really just revisions of New Kids on the Block, who were themselves a 'burbs-friendly version of New Edition).

Juxtaposing the boy-band concept onto a hyphy template somewhat inevitably results in a group like the Pack. Let's face it, no one's innocent these days, especially teenagers. Time was, New Edition's "Mr. Telephone Man" could set hearts a-flutter as the soundtrack to a first kiss. Yet in an age where once-taboo subject matter has become available to anyone with an Internet connection, today's youth might just as easily be having their first threesome to the Pack's "My Girl Gotta Girl Too."

It makes perfect sense for the grilled-and-tatted members of the Pack to become the idols of kids everywhere who love rap, skateboarding, and bisexual chicks €” a freakin' huge demographic, when you think about it. Sure, the Pack might not have the white-bread appeal of an 'N Sync, but its members €” Young L, Stunna, Uno, and Lil B €” come off as naturally charismatic on Based Boys (despite frequent use of both the n-bomb and b-word, which isn't so appealing).

Urban but not quite gangsta, the Pack's penchant for mixing technicolored skater gear with a hyphy lifestyle is equally as fresh as Young L's minimalist low-end rumbles and hypnotic keyboard oscillations. It's worth noting that very few of the teen acts of yesteryear produced their own material; Young L is credited with all but four of Based Boys' seventeen tracks, resulting in a more cohesive and original sound than most multiple-producer affairs. The utterly infectious 2006 single "Vans" hinted at the Pack's potential for huge crossover appeal, and though nothing else on Based Boys quite approaches instant classic status, even grown-ups (well, the sillier ones, anyway) might find themselves inanely repeating the simplistic chorus of "In My Car": I'm in my car/you know I'm in my car/I'm standing in my car/My car!

Based Boys not only redeems the hopes raised by hyphy, but has the potential to replace Backstreet, 'N Sync, and Brit (all tired or retired) in the hearts and minds of the all-important acne-and-text-messaging set. It's no mistake that the Pack speaks directly to the core values of young people today €” looking fly, having sex, getting money, and shaking their asses €” probably because they are themselves members of their target audience.

If you're looking for great rappers spitting meaningful lyrics, look elsewhere. If you're like me, look here.

You need to hear Michigan's Great Lakes Myth Society.

Lofty as it sounds, the name is not a misrepresentation. This unusual Ann Arbor, Michigan, quintet has cornered the market on the spirit of the big Midwest, capturing its brisk air, hearty food and quiet desperation. Initially known as the Original Brothers and Sisters of Love in 1997 before restarting with its current moniker in 2004, Great Lakes further hones its ornate pop arrangements and serpentine, gorgeous poetry on its second album. Despite a predilection toward 19th-century English phraseology, theres no frilly Decemberists-styled esoterica-no one here is afraid to aim for the gut. (Time Out Chicago)

Julianna Barwick - Sanguine

Anyone who liked the Panda Bear album, or liked the idea of the Panda Bear album, should check this out. Blissed out choral loops in front of warm, spacey electronics and faint acoustic guitar. Been enjoying the hell out of it lately, and it'll definitely make my list.

I'm such a glutton for punishment.

I had worked my way down to about 4G left to listen to. 2 days at work, really.

So, I grabbed my wife's box of discs from 2007, and loaded up more than 10G more.

I'm gonna be so sick of indie rock by the time I finish this.

Just now saw this. Yeah, I played this again just the other day, and it rocked my ass. It has that Mastodon/High On Fire sort of crunch and awesome riffing to it, but a bit more melody and a nice almost chill-out vibe to it. Another Top 10, I think, definitely.

I might actually manage like a Top 25 this year ... mostly metal records, of course.

God, that is such a great fucking album. My girlfriend has a foreign exchange student living with her from Norway who introduced me to Sondre Lerche. All three of his albums have a different sound and something different to love about them. He's kind of like a Norwegian Elliott Smith to me; emotionally charged songwriting that's easy to relate to while staying safely distant.

I've avoided the Sondre Lerche because of the cover, which makes me think of the likes of Mika and what-have-you. But I guess I should check that out.

Not merely enough!

I guess the short list of ones that have made the biggest impression would be:

High On Fire - Death Is This Communion (probably my likely #1)
Wolves In The Throne Room - Two Hunters
Alcest - Souvenirs dun Autre Monde
Dark Tranquillity - Fiction
Between The Buried and Me - Colors
Machine Head - The Blackening
Municipal Waste - The Art of Partying
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb
Dimmu Borgir - In Sorte Diaboli
Nile - Ityphallic
Hacride - Amoeba
Witchcraft - The Alchemist
Megadeth - United Abominations
Three Inches of Blood - Fire Up The Blades
Behemoth - The Apostasy
Jesu - Conqueror
Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works

None of these are too much of a shock, as most were heavily recommended around here or elsewhere. I'm of course open to squeezing in a few more. My metal tastes are fairly eclectic, obviously, but I'm not a huge fan of the overtly chaotic/avant garde. I prefer some degree of melody/heaviness/riffage/direction/atmosphere. Add maybe about 5-10 more records (some indie rock, a few slightly more mainstream), and that's practically every 2007 release I've bothered listening to.

I've become really conscious lately of my tendency to download things and never listen to them, so lately I've been going through and listening to every single song on my harddrive (except for some albums my wife asked for that I'm not interested in), and a lot of that stuff is older than 2007. Guess I want some degree of order to my music listening and justify why I have this stuff (and want to conserve hard drive space).

James D
Cool. Some very good albums there.

I think I've listened to this more than any other album this year come to think of it. Very good and interesting indie/rock album. If you only listen to one song on this, make sure its Lotus which is the closing track. 8+ minutes of rock heaven and definitely one of my favourite songs of recent times. The build up after the interlude is godlike.

note: this link isn't mine so I'm not sure about the quality of the rip, or even if the link is still working. Let me know if its not and I'll upload.

There's no way New Young Pony Club is staying out of my top 10 this year. I've played no album more and fallen in love with and danced around to individual songs more than these. While the singles "Ice Cream", "Get Lucky", and "The Bomb" really are the...uh...bomb, it's the sublime scintillations of "The Get Go" and the subdued soul of the closer "Tight Fit" that take this to and over the top for me.
