The Honeydrips - Here Comes The Future

The twee-pop album of the year. I know for some of you I might as well be saying "the grindcore album of the year," as off-putting as those pigeonholes are, but hear me out:
1. They (or he: it's one man band Mikael Carlsson) are Swedish. Instant points.
2. This is as lushly melodic and as sweetly sung as any album you'll hear this year. Guitars ring and jangle. Synths whoosh. Bobzilla swoons.
3. They quote Joy Division, literally, in "(Lack of) Love Will Tear Us Apart", which sounds like it's being sung by Pebbles and Bam-Bam, and musically by way of New Order by aping the "Ceremony" riff in "It Was A Sunny Summer Day" (which also has room for latin percussion break).


Now if I could only find a hard copy for less than $30.

This could turn out to be the biggest piece of shit of all-time, but based on that description Bob, I'm giving this a download.

Self titled debut album from Cambridge three piece Mind Meld on Wichita . Came out here to little fan-fare but I've seen them supporting Six Nation State and 65 Days of Static a couple of times in local venues. Best way to describe it would be Smile-era Brian Wilson meets MBV Strawberry Wire by way of XTC. Some of it kind of fits a loose travelling theme but it's not a concept album by any means although some of the song titles are a bit poncey it doesn't bog you down. Gorgeous melodies, glistening guitars, shimmering harmonies airy vocals and cleverly constructed songwriting. Thoroughly recommend it!

Lately, I've been listening to Mogwai, Mogwai, and more Mogwai. I highly, highly, highly recommend their new album, The Hawk is Howling.

I picked this up at Amoeba yesterday. Dude's kind of been losing me a bit since Carboot Soul. I liked In a Space Outta Sound ok, and if you liked that, you'll like this one OK. But there's a predictable, smooth R and B breakbeat samey-ness to many of the tracks. "Calling" is reminiscent of "Les Nuits," which of course is favorable, and the raggamuffin scritch dub on "Hey! Ego" is a good closer. Let's say 6.8/10.
