So great seeing people post ejaculatory reviews after listening to it for 15 minutes.

Really? Show me one.

This album reminds me of the previous new ones by U2 and Bruce. It's quality music, well-played, well-produced, professional, smooth, and ultimately, boring and disposable.

this is it.

i was thinking of making the comparison to Bruce, but got tired of this thread.

Wow. Sleep til 3pm on a saturday and you miss the huge leak. (were on deadlines so I got home at 7:30 this morning)

This is really good. People's response to REM records are usually a rorschach test on what their personal idea of what REM is supposed to be anyway. Most of ATS and parts of Reveal were demonstrably poor, but this is a good rock record.

As far as the U2 comparisons go, I think thats just silly. U2 are the biggest band in the world and calculate like a corporation to maintain that fact. REM knows they wont be no matter what they do. If they were just trying to recapture past glories, they would get the MANDOLIN back out, not the fuzzbox.

Im not saying people have to like this record, but I have a feeling were going to see alot of reviews (here and elsewhere) that have been made up in people's heads already for weeks before they heard the record, just tailored a little to match the details.

This is gonna get mad repeat play today.

You're telling me you never put on a record for the first time and after 15 minutes think "This is really good"? Its not like he's declaring it the album of the year or anything.

The Somb is a place of extremes: if Cardgage isn't ejaculating on something then Montana is pissing on it.

yeah, overall i like this album a whole lot. more than i've initially liked any R.E.M. since Hi Fi, that's for sure.

the flow of this album is really great and no songs overstay their welcome, if that makes any sense.

whats the deal on the vinyl release of it?

What, I thought you were waiting for the proper release? Tempting me to cave.

That's what I thought I was gonna do, too. But in the end, I caved easily. I saw it and bit at the first chance I got. And so far, I have no regrets.

Since I first put it on, I've been finding more and more I like about this album. No, it's not album of the year material. It's probably not in the top half of R.E.M. albums ever released. But it is a really nice surprise to see they still are capable of writing really solid songs.

At first, a song like "Houston" I wasn't too terribly keen on, but the more I listen to it, I do like it a lot. And ..."DJ" isn't that bad. It makes for a nice bookend for this album. A suitable closer that flows well with the rest of the album.

Overall, disappointed is not the word that comes to mind for this album. In fact, very pleased would be how I describe my feelings on it.

Which is the ejeculatory part again?

HewlettsDaughter
i've seen people get far more "ejaculatory" on lesser releases

this thread is nothing but people saying they enjoy Accelerate and that it's nothing more than a nice throwback from R.E.M.

I think the ejaculatory part is the time there where I put the "really" in front of good.

Next time I'll try to reign in the irresponsible hyperbole a bit.

I don't see anyone getting too upset or too ejaculatory, personally. I'm speaking of the actual band's output and downward trajectory.

Half of the haters haven't even heard the album....and they talk about jumping to conclusions.

I listened to this album on and off all weekend and enjoyed the hell out of every listen. To the people saying "enjoyable listen" isn't good enough....if I take pleasure from listening to it, then i'll listen to it....this isn't farking rocket science. I suppose i could limit myself to only listening to the very best mindblowing amazing album....but frankly I think i'd get bored listening to nothing but Abbey Road for the rest of my life.
Mitchell
Had a couple of listens now

"Living Well Is the Best Revenge”, “Man-Sized Wreath” and "Horse to Water" sound like they could be lesser tracks on their mid 80’s output in both sound and quality. I’m not keen on "Supernatural Superserious" but would probably be the song I’d use as the first single. “Hollow Man" was alright but not a return to rock, "Houston" I don’t like aful organ on it makes it sound like The Doors and "Accelerate" is a bit of nothing song for a title track and finishes just as it was getting interesting. "Until the Day Is Done" see “Hollow Men” "Mr. Richards" I struggled to finish it was so annoying I have no idea why people think this song is on par with their best work "Sing for the Submarine" sounds like it could be on the previous three albums but has a little bit more jangle on it at the start, by the end I was getting into it. Probably my favourite on the album
"I'm Gonna DJ" was also annoying.

One thing I’d say about Up and Reveal (Not ATS) is they were trying to do something different and I found the attempt at this at least interesting, this however is just a bunch of average REM songs a couple of good ones, and three I really don’t want to hear again. If you are a big fan of the band then you’ll like this, if you like to cherry pick through their catalogue you’ll not be interested it’s not really bringing anything to their back catalogue of merit. I’m glad they are still touring and making albums but this one isn’t for me.

"i'm gonna dj" grew on me instantly
great closing track

I've never "got" REM. I know I missed the band in their hey-day and this might be the reason. This new album doesn't do anything for me, and neither has anything else I've heard by the band. That said, I really want to give them their fair shot. Someone point me in the right direction, give me one album to check out, and make me a fan.

get these three:

Murmur, Life's Rich Pageant, Automatic For The People

if you don't like any of them, then stop right there, they're not for you.

I also add New Adventures in Hi Fi to that list

like Fables, it's brilliant but you probably want to be an established fan first

Dr. Johnny Fever
Life's Rich Pageant or Document are probably the best starting point, along with AFTP.

In a 2001 Time interview, Stipe described himself as a "queer artist" and revealed that he had been in a relationship with "an amazing man" for three years at that point.[21] In previous interviews he has described himself as "an equal opportunity lech"[22] and said he doesn't define himself as gay, straight, or bisexual, but that he was attracted to and had relationships with both men and women.[23]

Yeah, not new news. Unless you only get your news from Us Weekly.

That duet was the most awkward moment on MTV ever.

People in the audience were fainting from all the gayness

After one listen I was ready to write off this album. Now I've had a chance to listen to it three times and I've got to admit it's growing on me. Easily their best effort in the post-Berry years (not that that's saying much... ).
Man Sized Wreath is my fav track on here.
Supernatural Superserious, Buck's guitar almost jangles and you can almost hear Mills backing vocals.

This statement is pretty accurate...

Addictive is the watchword.

The length is perfect. Leaves you wanting more.

But I swear the moment that "Staring Down the Barrel" becomes a studio'd B-side, Im gonna nab it and make it my official Track 2.

Not sure how Im gonna burn it into my vinyl copy, but we''ll cross that bridge at the appropriate time.

BURBANK, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 03/21/08 -- R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and Peter Buck announced today that they are both, after years of awkward speculation, heterosexual, or “straight.” Singer Michael Stipe declared his relief, and acknowledged that this turn of events was welcomed news, congratulating their courage and candidness.

Stipe, Out Magazine and BUTT Magazine cover star, after 14 years of speaking publicly about his own private life, was in a strong position to offer his support. Said Mike Mills, “It was time to step out of the fog of uncertainty and into the light of light.”
