I've seen the following openers for R.E.M.:

Robyn Hitchcock ('89)
Sonic Youth ('95)
Mercury Rev ('99)
Wilco & Ed Harcourt ('03)
Chris Mars ('04)
Hans Christian Anderson
riddle me this...

catapult, best song of all time?

right now, yes.
solace
Radiohead (in addition to U2) asked Arcade Fire last year but they turned down both offers (well other than the 3 Canadian shows AF did)
Hans Christian Anderson
i thought AF did open a stretch of a recent u2 tour? guess i'm wrong.

then again, i don't really put AF quite at the same level that i do for radiohead, wilco, sonic youth or the national for that matter.

oh, and for the record, sitting still is an even better tune than catapult. wink.gif

not yet, although i just officially moved here 4 months ago after only frequently visiting over the last 4 years. i was acutally under the impression that he didn't really live here full time anymore, in part because his ex-wife still does.

on that note, the club that they purchased together in the early 90s, the crocodile cafe, recently closed its doors. buck apparently hasn't had anything to do w/ the venue for years i guess, but his ex-wife, stephanie dorgan, was still the general manager. apparently she was doing a shitty job and and didn't give two shits about the venue, and ultimately was the one who decided to pull the plug entirely, despite the wishes of the employees or her relinquishing her GM duties. anyhow, it was a great place, good atmosphere and excellent sound, and an important player in the early grunge scene (benchmark shows from mudhoney, nirvana and the like..)

Woah. That's a shame about the Crocodile. I had no idea. That's really sudden. It is pretty important in the history of PNW rock. It's the spot of that famous $3 show (where Nirvana was a surprise guest in '92). And it was an instrumental venue for PNW indie artists like Death Cab, Bazan, etc. According to my Oly/Seattle friends, Buck hung around that place like a freakin' spider. You couldn't avoid seeing the guy around there.

Saw this on the front page and started getting all excited thinking leak wink.gif

I'm not a huge fan of the title but R.E.M. has such great titles in the early/mid career it'd be kinda hard to top any of those.

Out of all the great bands I've seen opening for R.E.M. nothing topped the set Patti Smith played in Saratoga Springs NY in 99 I believe it was..she was really on that night.

who else has REM had open for them? I know radiohead did for the monster tour, and they wanted neutral milk hotel sometime in the 90s, but they declined. who else? band's got killer taste, they almost rival pearl jam in that department (sonic youth, my morning jacket, sleater-kinney, bob pollard, the buzzcocks and frank black on their most recent tours...). actually i think u2 picks pretty killer openers too.

I like this as a topic.... which band picks the best opening acts. The other obvious culprits besides REM.

Pearl Jam
Mudhoney (various years)
Shudder To Think ('98)
Frank Black ('98)
Tenacious D ('98)
Dismemberment Plan ('00)
Sonic Youth ('00)
Supergrass ('00)
Sleater-Kinney ('03)

U2
The Pretenders ('87)
The Pixies ('92)
Public Enemy ('93)
Rage Against the Machine ('97)
Oasis ('97)
PJ Harvey ('01)
Kanye West ('05)
BobtheSquid
U2 also had Sugarcubes alongside PE in '92, and No Doubt did the second leg of the '01 tour, while Kings of Leon opened some of the '05 tour.

And to add to the PJ openers, I've seen Bad Religion and Fastbacks open for them as well...
solace
For PJ, also add Bad Religion & The Ramones in '95, Iggy Pop & Cheap Trick in '98, My Morning Jacket in '06, Johnny Marr, Idlewild & Buzzcocks in '03, The Vandals in '00, and Ben Harper in '95, '96, & '98, Grant Lee Buffalo & Kings X in '94

Pearl Jam also opened for U2 in Europe in '92 for some shows

Getting back to the new album: I don't care for the title but I think REM likes to have album titles that "mean something". And Accelerate is pretty good, if you're trying to get across the point that this is "the fastest album" or the most rock album REM have made in years.

it'd been coming. the club had been bouncing staff and band's paychecks for the past 2 years, stopped food service about 2 months ago, a month before it closed their booking agent quit essentially b/c of an inability to work w/ stephanie dorgan. i understood that buck used to hang out there a lot in the past, but that hasn't been the case since '02 or something. as i said, i'm pretty sure he doesn't live in seattle full time anymore.

R.E.M., Daniel Lanois, French punks to play SXSW

By Joe Gross | Thursday, January 3, 2008, 03:01 PM

R.E.M. is confirmed for this year’s SXSW, playing one of only a handful of American dates before its 14th album, “Accelerate,” arrives on April 1 and the band launches a larger tour later in the year. Word has it that, per the album title, the record will be a return to faster songs.

The band last played Austin in 2003 as an Austin City Limits Music Festival headliner.

R.E.M. is in need of a hit. The band’s most recent album, the 2007 double disc “Live,” tanked, debuting at No. 72 in October, and vanishing from the charts soon after, according to Nielsen Soundscan. The band’s last studio album was the mid-tempo 2004 collection, “Around the Sun,” which was met with mixed reviews and indifferent commercial response.

Other confirmed acts include Daniel Lanois, Domino Records artists the Kills, Lightspeed Champion, Sons & Daughters and French synth-punks Cheveu.
Dr. Johnny Fever
Saw R.E.M. on the Monster tour and they had Luscious Jackson opening for them. Not bad, not terribly exciting either.

I'm not crazy about the title, if only because it seems lazy that they have 2 albums in a row named after song titles on the album. Still, I'm very excited to hear what they've come up with. Really the first band I became "obsessed" with and lately my fandom seems more out of obligation than anything else. But the Dublin shows were amazing. "Mr Richards" has the potential to be a Document like epic.

If Buck isnt spending much time in Seattle these days, is he back in Athens?

i could totally be wrong, that was just the impression i was under via hearsay information.

omg omg omg omg omg! seriously these were my two "most listened to" bands of 2007 (i mentioned earlier in this thread that while i've had and loved AFTP and LRP for a while now, 2007 marked the year i got into chronic town and murmur). i realize that the sets will be considerably lacking chronic town and murmur tracks, but REM is one of those arena bands i need to see before i die (file along w/ bob dylan, the rolling stones, springsteen, u2). considering that they're probably the most affordable of the bunch, and that they always choose killer opening acts, they're probably the first of those 5 that i'll actually see.

wow, this is the best news i've heard in a while. wonder if the langderado date is the first "stop," of sorts.

who else has REM had open for them? I know radiohead did for the monster tour, and they wanted neutral milk hotel sometime in the 90s, but they declined. who else? band's got killer taste, they almost rival pearl jam in that department (sonic youth, my morning jacket, sleater-kinney, bob pollard, the buzzcocks and frank black on their most recent tours...). actually i think u2 picks pretty killer openers too.

The National team up with REM

On 2008 Matt Berninger from The National confirmed to Kingsmill that he's a fan of the vocal style Michael Stipe. So he was very happy to report his band will be teaming up with REM later this year.

"I don't know if we're allowed to say but I think we might be doing some shows with them when their new record comes out. So that'll be unbelievable for us. I think Modest Mouse are also going to be part of those shows too."

The National finish their Australia tour with a few shows in Sydney this week.

yeah, i've only seen one show at the UC and it was U2 and i was in high school then. it was a rad show and all, but i dunno. i'd rather see 'em saddle up at the Auditorium, again. Eh, whatever, I'm going to buy super good tickets to the show and hopefully basically be on the stage.

Considering they played smaller theaters last time around, they must be really anticipating this album to be huge to be booking arenas.

and that Modest Mouse + The National at least bring in some of their own fans...
Hans Christian Anderson
despite what venues REM played on their last tour...anyone who thinks a bill of REM + Modest Mouse + The National will play somewhere like the Auditorium Theater = delusional.
solace
they played to a pretty decent sized crowd (12k+) here in St. Paul in 2003

i swear recalling that the theater tour was scaled back not only because of slower ticket sales in some markets, but also just because they wanted to play some more intimate shows that time around too...
HewlettsDaughter
I know I am probably quite delusional in my hope, but there are a lot of gaps in that tour itinerary. I'd assume they are going to fill it in with some more dates, but if not, perhaps R.E.M. maybe have a secret show or two up their sleeves for a smaller venue? I mean, they have two days between Denver and Chicago and then another off day after Chicago before Toronto. I think I will hold out a sliver of hope that something like this could feasibly happen and that I could feasibly afford to go to it.
Hans Christian Anderson
modest mouse can sell out the auditorium theater on their own.

a missing seattle date is highly suspect to me. however, there is a huge gap in their gates which happens to coincide w/ the sasquatch festival taking place over memorial day weekend. i'm wondering if this bill is going to headline day 1, as the cure already have day 2 spoken for.

wow. i might even consider going to denver for the red rocks show. i've wanted to see a show there literally forever, and it could be a good excuse to go visit my friends in the area and see 3 of my favorite bands.

i mean, it's weird there's no seattle date, right? they've headlined bumbershoot before and it was/is buck's home?

i will go to red rocks one day, i'm just kinda poor. this may be the best excuse i have to do it.

also, if you've never been to the gorge (where they hold sasquatch), it's pretty much the other outdoor venue that consistently gives red rocks a run for it's money for the title of "best outdoor amphitheater." but actually the place in BC where they're opening the tour (where i will go see them if they don't do sasquatch and i don't go to red rocks) isn't supposed to be that shabby either.

my theory re: this bill taking day 1 of sasquatch was totally just pulled out of my ass, although it's still somewhat possible. i was initially hoping radiohead would headline day 1, as i think the juxtaposition of radiohead + the cure as the "mega-british bands of different eras" would have been really cool, but this bill + the cure would be equally as excellent. if rem + the cure headline this festival, 80s college rock revivalism must be in full swing, which is only a good thing in my eyes.

yeah i do tend to forget this detail

the bands billed on this tour are pretty great. no denying it. i guess the UC is the only suitable venue for a tour of this magnitude. either way, i plan on getting my ticket(s) early. hopefully they're not outrageously expensive. still, i plan on hopping on any presale that goes down just so i can get as close as humanly possible.
Hans Christian Anderson
honestly, i don't like the auditorium theater. i've seen wilco + the white stripes there and i was not impressed. it doesn't sound that good unless you're on the ground level and are in front of the balcony overhang. i seem to recall liking the chicago theater though. and that said, the auditorium would still be 10x better than the UC. but still, i think this lineup would be fine at rosemont. i think UC only holds 3k more people than rosemont (21k vs. 18k if i remember correctly).

seeing as i'm debating between, vancouver, red rocks and my sasquatch pipe dream, i'm going to be seeing this bill outside any way i shape it. kinda psyched about that.
whichonespink
I also would have preferred a smaller venue, but with this lineup, it's not realistic.

I have access to the fanclub, so if anyone is interested in a ticket or two, PM me and I'll help you, as I did a few people (Jess, Tor, Some Girl, and modjam) the last time the band came around.
