So I bought Accelerate the day it came out, but never got around to listening to it until a few days ago. After initially feeling positive about a comeback and the Dublin rehearsals, I started to doubt that it'd be any good. All the "They're back!" interviews, stories and press releases reeked of the usual new-album promotion from a rock band that some magazines and bloggers fall for all the time. (see Fighters, Foo, Oasis, etc.) So my expectations were evened out a bit, I guess. But I really, really like this album. It's easily their best in a decade. Ok, maybe that's not saying much considering two not-so-good albums are its competition but they do deserve credit for rebounding from the heartbreakingly boring Around the Sun and just for making an enjoyable rock record. The more I listen to it, the more I like it and want to keep listening. Bravo, gentlemen.

It's a great rock and roll record. What more can we ask?

It's a decent rock and roll record. We expect a lot more of this band.

Not in 2008, we don't. The expectations changed unless you and Doc Brown traveled back to 1987. After Around the Sun, I was just hoping for something that didn't euthanize me.

spot on.

are tons of people and reviewers overrating it somewhat? sure, but it's still a very solid record deserving of all the calls of a "comeback record"

pulled some pretty good tix for the St. Paul show yesterday, can't f'n wait.

Fair enough. Still, if the name on the record wasn't REM, would anyone listen to it? By no means is it a bad record--it's pretty decent--but there's not much special or unique about it.
Elia Isquire
Well, even if the band's name was Your Mother's Penis, I'd probably still love and listen frequently to "Living Well is the Best Revenge" and a few others on the LP.

After Up, Reveal and Around the Sun, I wasn't expecting any kind of record at all. And if you go back further, I think Green was the last time they rocked this easily.

Monster?

not arguing whether or not you feel that's a great/good/decent/shit record, but there was plenty of rock on that one too.

I'm with UselessRocker (and others) on R.E.M.'s new one. Is Accelerate going to make you forget about Murmur, Lifes Rich Pageant, Document, and others? No. But there's only one song I don't like on Accelerate and overall, it's a good album. "Living Well is the Best Revenge," "Man-Sized Wreath," "Mr. Richards," and "Horse to Water" are my faves from it.

I was thinking about Monster when I said "rocked this easily." Monster just never felt right to me. That probably sounds pretty snobbish, but it's just my opinion.

Hey. Anybody receive their Chicago fanclub tickets yet? My pair for Vancouver showed up about a week ago, but I haven't seen these yet. Kinda tough to put them up on Craigslist when you don't have possession of them, lolz.

I emailed them yesterday about this and they said they mail the tickets out two weeks prior to the show and that I shouldn't fret.

So that's why you're yet to see those there Chicago tickets.

QUOTE

Okay, everybody. I went through all the songs and I said my goodbyes, but it’s not time to turn on the house lights just yet. Oh yes, it’s time for an encore!

This is sort of mind-blowing for me, but Michael Stipe has volunteered to spend some time answering questions from me — and from you — about the songs and his lyrics. Here are some guidelines, in his own words:

Remember that I’m not the best at recalling studio memories, etcetera, and so the more interesting questions for me will be about intention and exact lyrics or my interpretation of what I meant, what I think I meant, whatever. Remember also that some songs have no real lyrics [chorus of orange crush comes to mind] and so I cannot answer those.

We hope to have Michael answering questions, maybe a few a day for a couple weeks, starting sometime next week. All you have to do is email your questions to me, and I will have them sent along. To keep things fair and to make this easier on Michael, let’s stick to a maximum of two questions per reader. Michael is going to be selecting the questions that he answers, and this will be within the limits of his available time, so there is no guarantee that every question will be used. If you are a regular commenter here, please include your handle in the email.

Please send your questions to: popsongs08 @ gmail.com

I hope you’re as excited as I am about this!

I already asked about 'Country Feedback' to see if the lyrics were improvised and what have you. This could be really awesome.

Man Sized Wreath popped up on my ipod, earlier today. I was liking it and thought I should listen to the whole album, since I hadn't done that since around the time it came out.
3-4 songs in I got bored and put the ipod back on shuffle.
_______
i would ask him why there was a glossy "4" on top of all the R's on the album cover of the first pressings of GREEN on vinyl, CD, and even on the cassette. i've never heard a decent explanation.

anybody know what i;m talking about?
HandBanana
For a time, Stipe had this thing about 4s and Rs.
As I recall Pageant had a typo where the 04 in the tracklist became "0R."
Other than that I dont know.
But I do know also that the "theme" of the album and tour was Fire Earth Air Water, so that could also be something.

I'm still hoping they come back to the US for a second leg of the current tour.

5 was on Document, I believe, because it was their fifth studio album (not counting Chronic Town or Dead Letter Office). As for the "break up" comment, Accelerate is a good enough CD to make me glad they didn't pack it in. I still need to see them live, too.

R.E.M. No. 5 was one of the original titles for Document.

so, i'll admit i wrote that post last night in the midst of leave. i listened to the entire thing and once again i was struck by how it kinda peters out (no pun on buck) around be mine. the last songs are decent enough, with electrolite being one of the best tunes on the album, but tracks 1-8 = as perfect as anything REM ever put out. too bad. but still

It's hanging tough in the back end my top 20 right now, will probably end up 20-25 range depending on what great albums are left to come.

Mark me down for 1. I wonder if they are using the same remaster from the gold disc....that remaster is amazing. I live in great fear of the day my Murmur gold disc becomes unplayable. Either way it will be nice to replace my cassette bootleg of this show with a nice CD copy.

QUOTE
On November 25, 2008, the two-CD 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Murmur will be released on Universal. The two-CD set features R.E.M.'s debut album, remastered, plus an additional disc with a previously unreleased concert recorded at Larry’s Hideaway in Toronto, three months after Murmur’s April 1983 release.

The 16-song live performance boasts nine of Murmur’s 12 songs, including “Radio Free Europe," three songs from the Chronic Town EP, early renditions of "7 Chinese Bros." and "Harborcoat," as well as “Just A Touch,” eventually a track included on R.E.M.’s fourth album, 1986’s Lifes Rich Pageant. The live set also features a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “There She Goes Again,” which R.E.M. recorded in the studio for the b-side of “Radio Free Europe.”

Exclusive essays by producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, as well as former I.R.S. executives Jay Boberg, Sig Sigworth, Carlos Grasso round out the deluxe edition.

Remastered Murmur, plus a live CD from the same year? Um, fuck yeah!!!

once a band gets so old they have to pretend to be the same band they used to be
they should just break up

like if REM tribute bands put out albums they would put out Accelerate

Yeah, that's about where Accelerate is for me, too. "Hanging tough" is a good way to describe it.

I also can't wait to get my hands on the Murmur package. It'll be great to have live stuff from the I.R.S. years.

I don't think I've ever bought a 2-disc deluxe reissue (of a CD I already owned) that was worth the money. Even with the remastering...I'm always all excited to run out and get it, the bonus live show or B-sides are somewhat enjoyable, but I always end up wishing I'd just bought something totally new instead.

These were actually what I had in mind when I wrote the original post. I bought the Slanted & Enchanted and Crooked Rain reissues, even though I already owned both albums on CD...listened through the bonus stuff once and filed them both away.

Now when I want to hear "Gold Soundz" I play my original CD, because it's easier than dealing with the fancy jewel case and booklet on the expanded version. Seriously.

Maybe I just don't like Pavement enough. But my original thought holds true for the Replacements reissues, too, and I'm a huge fan. I can't help but think, why did I waste another $15 on a CD I already own...and that I already know so well that I'll probably only listen to it once every few years?

Shh...the record companies don't want you thinking like that.

Still, we're talking a full live show from R.E.M. back in their heyday. Should be great. Hopefully they'll follow U2's example. Those 2-CD reissues are really well done.

The live show is really what it's all about, I doubt this new remaster will sound as good as the gold disc remaster anyway. That said i'm guilty of buying this album about 6 times over the years, vinyl, sealed mint vinyl, 3 cd's and cassette...i figure at this point one more copy can't make my obsession with this album any more pathetic.
I do listen to it much more then once every few years however, I play it at least 2-3 times a month.

Deluxe Edition....CD2 ripped as single mp3/cue since it is mixed (no gaps in between). CD2 has 01m27s of silence due to some pre-gap deal. I have no idea if it contains a hidden track, my drive can't rip pre-indexes. Refer to eac.jpg for proof. I don't have audio editors installed either, so it was
left as is. I believe the .cue skips the pre-gap sound anyway.

It has to get good reviews. Without this album and the history that followed, there would be no Pitchfork or Popmatters. They owe it their very existence.

The remastering can't be worse than the CD thats been on the market since the 80s. Sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.

It's not surprising it is getting good reviews (it is one of the most acclaimed debut albums in rock), but it doesn't have to get a 10, which does address the whole package (the remastering as well as the live disc).
Rob Gordon
The remastering sounds good.

The live continuous track is weird. On WMA it never starts playing, then I back it up and there it is? Hmmm?

Anyway, I used to have a cassette copy of this. Believe it's a radio broadcast from a station that was once great in the 80's. CFNY.
