thought this guy would be up my alley, but nothing he's done has ever clicked. Not even the Soft Boys, really.

Not so much a band, but a genre. Black Metal. I don't get it, I love most metal but just can't seem to get into this stuff. Even some of the undeniable classics which have been released over the year I don't seem to like.
Having said that, I do like the new Wolves in the Throne Room.

the biggest example in my mind is the arcade fire. it's not as if i strongly dislike them or anything, but i also don't think they're really anything close to brilliant. it seems most of the rest of music dorkdom does.
i've felt the same way about the pixies and pavement in the past. needless to say, my opinion has changed on both counts.

The Rolling Stones are probably the biggest one. Akron/Family I've heard, but Love is Simple kind of ZZZed me first time around. I like BSS, but I feel like I should like them a lot more than I do.
This list could go on forever.

The Sonic Youth lukewarmness might stem from the fact that soooo many acts have borrowed/ripped off/absorbed their sound since the days of Sister and Daydream Nation, that it becomes difficult to truly appreciate their near-blinding originality when they emerged in the early 80s.

Could also stem from the tendency to want to check out
Daydream Nation -- a massively overrated record, if there ever was one, and one that sounds horrendously dated today -- as an introduction, when, in fact, Sonic Youth has made so many records that are so much better than that one.

agreed on sonic youth. maybe they were blindingly original back in the day, but my problem with sonic youth is that so much of their stuff sounds so tame. again, i like them, but they're hardly amazing to me. also, thurston just seems like a gigantic, pretentious, name-dropping douchebag.

Yeah, they basically have a lot of meticulously performed, pretty normalish rock songs with guitar noises in the middle. I don't know, my favorite album of theirs is Confusion Is Sex. And I like the SYR EPs. And obviously "Schizophrenia" and "Teenage Riot" are incredible songs. It's just that even an album like Sister, which I enjoy a whole lot... I agree with St. Park, just kind of ordinary compared to a lot of noise rock, punk, indie rock, etc. I just can't freak out over it.

well, i've been listening to 'forever changes' in the car lately. it's good and all, but maybe too hippyish for my tastes
i figure i SHOULD like it 'cause it's on some 'top 10 records of all time' lists. i feel deficient in some way that i don't fully connect with something widely acclaimed that has stood the test of time
oh yeah, and arcade fire. like their sound and aesthetic, but the songs don't do much for me

Radiohead, and most of Springsteen's output (specifically Born to Run, Magic, anything with the E Street Band), otherwise I overpraise absolutely everything that critics have ever lauded. Oh and I guess classic 80's rap, but that's mostly because I haven't given it a shot yet.
