It's still not being promoted by the record label, it's just a song from the record that's getting radio play. There's already a third single in the pipeline. I guess that means four 'eligibe' 'singles' from the record then.
solace
released to radio = still a single in my book.

physical singles are fairly rare these days.

and considering Elco usually bumbles into the thread and derides the entire list as being rubbish I don't see, other then it being a Springsteen song, why he's taking an interest.

There's not denying that physical singles are in decline especially with downloading. That said until we do change this to tracks of the year it shouldn't be a free-for-all on any song that gets some radio play.

I'm not taking a stand against it being a single, it doesn't bother me what Bruce Springsteen singles make the countdown. I'm just asking to see some evidence that fills the following

-Singles include:
1. Songs with released 7 or 12" (or new for 2007, clearly identified digital single release) singles bearing their name
2. EPs of both 5 songs and 22 minutes less (if either is greater, than it is eligible for the albums list)
3. Songs with a video (assuming not live, and assuming the artist didn't make one for every song on the album)
4. Songs that have charted on any major US or UK chart (except for download)

It fills none of those so far as far as I can see, if someone can show any evidence I'll happily say "I think that should count."

It's things like this that make me opposed to the top-heavy scoring. Now Bruce's non-single dad-rock is going to take the spot of some awesome pop single.
scarymuppet
We had this same argument a couple years ago about like a Wilco or Sufjan song or something that had a lot of adds. Those pro-calling-it-a-single lost. PRECEDENT.

i agree... but a label releasing a promo to radio for airplay... how is that NOT a single?

it's not radio just picking up on it or something, it's actually being pushed as a single by the label...

FALSE.

It's a PROMO meaning that it's being pushed as a PROMO for an album. If it was being pushed as a single, then it would be AVAILABLE as a single.

ugh.

do you realize how few actual physical RETAIL singles are released in 2007?

lol

i'm just telling you that from a label & radio standpoint, being released to radio IS a single (i've worked in both). we don't have to agree, but just giving you info from the opposite end as the consumer.

also, singles are more often than not released to promote records in this day and age, not to promote JUST a single... no matter if it's an officially released single or promo only. often promo singles are just easier to release and labels realize that a certain artists fans would never bother buying a physical single anyway, their intention is the same.

Where is the evidence the record company are doing this though, I've not seen it.

"Radio Nowhere" - August 28, 2007
"Long Walk Home" - will be the second single released from the 2007 Bruce Springsteen album Magic. The music video was made and released on 25 September 2007, the same day as the video for Radio Nowhere.
"Livin' in the Future" Mooted as the next single.

Are they really promoting 4 singles within three months of the record coming out?

Girls in Their Summer Clothes
November 24, 2007

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

The Boss gave fans what they wanted when he announced his return to high-energy rock with loud, angry guitars in "Radio Nowhere." Almost experimental by Springsteen standards, the second single from No. 1 album "Magic" surprises with a rich, symphonic pop sound that channels the Beach Boys. Sending a sunny melody over layered keyboards, bells and strings, "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" is the most upbeat track on the new disc, with an ambitious "Pet Sounds" arrangement and rasp-free vocals, sung with a hint of nostalgia. In the old days, a Springsteen character turned heads on a breezy walk through town, but now, "In the cool of the evening light, the girls in their summer clothes pass me by." —Sven Philipp

I've read that twice now. It's not correct, it's not the second single. Surely if it was actually the current single of one of the biggest acts in the world it might be slightly easier to see evidence.

i haven't seen an actual physical single for Long Walk Home announced anywhere...

edit: ah, it's digital only:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EI...24/ai_n20512193

so the author of that blurb is incorrect in stating it's the second single, fine.

also, the version of Girls In Their Summer Clothes that's released as a single is a new mix called the Winter Mix
Rob Gordon
I think Long Walk Home was only released in the UK.

And, again, I side with Elc and Solace...obv...since it's slotted at 1 on my list and I started this whole thing. Ha
Mitchell
My point is it's extremely unlikely all four of those songs are sanctioned by the record company to be pushed as singles. Therefore not all four are eligible, you can argue about which they are but the case for "Girls in Their Summer Clothes" isn't that strong at the moment by the criteria in the first thread.

If that genuinely was the single the record company was pushing (before Christmas I might add as well) why are their only two sources on the internet (The Billboard piece and the eBay auction) for it?

We've had the discussion about promos before as well, that's why you couldn't vote for Let Down, Climbing Up The Walls, Idioteque, The National Anthem, Optimistic and so on in the 1995-2004 poll. I'm not going there again.

No, it was a digital release pushed by the record company at the same time as the physical release of "Radio Nowhere" the videos has their débuts on the same day (25/9).

For right now, "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" is not eligible. However, there were some reports a few weeks ago that Springsteen had filmed a video for the song on the beach in Jersey, so if that or any sort of physical release beyond a promo gets released before the 16th, it'll count.

Sorry Rob, I think it's a great song too. If you want me to, I can wait on tabbing your list until the end if the video does come out or if it doesn't, you can change the list.

I'm not going there again.

Twenty posts deep into the argument, "I'm not going there again," lol.

I don't see how that Bruce song isn't a single, but whatevs, I'm not some trainspotting research librarian. Video and/or physical single release are shite criteria to use in 2007. Many artists have given up on both. A promotional single with artwork exists, is being pushed to radio, and people are hearing it on the radio.

Are we such clinical geeks with regard to catalogue numbers and "label intent" that we can't call something a single even though your everyday listener who hears the song on the radio and likes it thinks it's every much as a single as Kanye's latest? The answer would appear to be yes, yes we are.

As an aside, wikipedia is not the word of god.

Just so I'm clear, a Deerhunter song with an official, band-sanctioned (not to mention low-budget and crappy) video on YouTube that's never been played on television, nor played as a single outside of the midnight shift of a college radio station... that's a single. Because it has a video. But this Bruce song, no sir, not a single.

Yancy, I care as little for radio play as you seemingly do for record label numbers.

Then you are horribly, terribly unqualified to judge what is and isn't a single on this side of the pond.

I wish that physical (especially 7" vinyl) singles were still prevalent worldwide the way they are in your country, but they're not. Record label airplay push means more over here than a thousand limited three-part singles with exclusive b-sides and remixes.

Until this does happen (which in a couple of years may be completely necessary and would be happy with it) this is a singles poll and needs some restriction to what is and isn't a single. Promo singles to radio aren't eligible by the rules as stated in the first post, this was the case in '06 and '05 as well despite the fact "Chicago" got in despite it not being a single at all.

We've been through this countless times and it's mainly down to an opinion on whether you think a 7" inch vinyl on a tiny label is a more legitimate then a song that has been picked up for blanket radio play. I think we all know who stands where.

As I've said, there seems to only be a piece in Billboard about the Springsteen song being an upcoming single and a promo on eBay and a random picture of the cover. If this was the official third Springsteen single from the album you'd reasonable accept that you might find one, some all of the following;

a ) It gets so much radio play it charts

Obviously this would make it a single by the rules, there's a chance this might still happen there's also the chance that it might not happen until after the deadline / 2008 which is one of the reasons I'm 'being a dick' about this.

b ) Columbia Records push it as a single in a press release.

Now while this isn't the most scientific of criteria, for an act as big as Springsteen you'd have to concede that it should be fairly easy to find evidence of this somewhere on the internet.

c ) A Video

Might still happen and if and when I'll support it as being eligible (FTR Yancy, I don't think much of the video loophole either but it's unlikely that a band sanctioned video would not be accompanied by another of these.)

d ) Some mention of it on Springsteen's site / a large fan-site

Not that I can find

e ) Some information on it on Wikipedia, Rate Your Music, Discogs etc.

While these aren't perfect on their own I'd happily concede if the single was listed on a couple of these at least

f ) Ability to buy in stores, Amazon or a push to sell it as an individual song on iTunes (possibly with b-sides, new versions, live stuff)
solace
which brings me to this question for you Mitchell...

in voting for your singles list, are you voting for truly the single or the release?

like, the All My Friends EP, is that truly your #2 song of the year (that meets the singles criteria set forth here on SOMB for EOY purposes), or are you voting for it because of the EP as a whole?

just curious
Slackmo
Mitchell, I can't believe how much energy you're expending to essentially bury your stellar singles list in an argument.
