no, not really. they released 5 vinyl only EPs simultaneously on really small labels and then like a month later put all the best songs out on this one. if anything it's just a condensed version of everything.

the Dr. Dog album was absolute trash. some of the most boring lines I've ever heard from the beatles. I had high hopes for it too.
Tim Hecker's sound grew tired after the year, it kinda deserved it's token ambient status and I loved it before. it doesn't have the holding power of something like playthroughs, endless summer, or even those artists "less well recieved" albums. Stars of the Lid is really smooth and gentle. I fall asleep listening to it all the time but I like that quality about spesific albums.
Montana, not sure if you would consider my list "sheepish" but I too don't get all the love for some of these albums. indie rock is starting to sound pretty rehashed to me.

I'd disagree with you here, Pooter. I think that Harmony has the holding power of something like Playthroughs (or my personal favorite, Multiples), and Endless Summer.
I do agree that Hecker's sound is not as throat grabbing as it was last year, but i am going to chalk that up to the fact that I have been with it a year, and have listened to it so much, that it no longer slaps me across the face.

This is exactly why it doesn't have that staying power for me. it's probibly been a good month or two since I fully listened to Harmony but the last few attempts DIDNT hit me in the face yet Multiples and Endless Summer (possibly my favorite album of all time...yeah, I know) continue to do so and reveal more every listen. I perfer Venice and 94Diskot and maybe even Marijun to Harmony but for the sake of making a statement with out a fresh take, I will listen to it again tonight.

it's all the approach really. I literally have to listen to Stars of the Lid differently that any other band (and most ambient even). You have to tune your mind around their pace and their scope. The depth of their sound is truly unreal, but at first it seems static and redundant. Sure it might not be worth all that time, (it took a solid 10 listens before I started to really dig in), but i cant say enough good about them.

That's a fair point. The real stunning part of Harmony was it's visceral nature, and once that has worn away (either from time, or what have you), then what it all comes down to is how much you dig his arrangements. I suppose they work for me, but i can easily see why others would tire of them.
it really isnt in the same class as Fennesz at all, but then again, few records are.

Paul, though I doubt it will place anywhere, can I get a ruling on Working For A Nuclear Free City's Businessmen and Ghosts? It's a 2-disc release that combines their debut UK album from last year, an EP from earlier this year, and about an album's worth of unreleased/new tracks. The original track listings weren't maintained. Comp/Reissue or Album? I'm inclined to say Album.
I'm going to say Album. It is the first time the material is being released in the U.S.
