Hedberg was the excellence. I had the pleasure of seeing him two years ago with Derek (Hewletts Daughter) and some other friends, and he put on an unforgettable show.

Anyone know if they're planning on releasing any other CDs/DVDs of material that were recorded between Mitch All Together and his death?
KENAN THOMPSON
oh man i downloaded this bootleg once of mitch completely bombing at some show in florida, it's sad, frustrating, and hilarious. i'll upload it tomorrow morning.
Andyroo
It's tough to watch that stuff. On the DVD of Mitch All Together, you can watch the uncut version of his Comedy Central special and there are so many silent gaps... makes me uncomfortable, honestly.
SpacemanSpiff
Yeah, it is sort of unsettling watch him try to squeeze every laugh out of that audience as possible. I think they're just a bunch of lunkheads, though.
I woulda been pissing my pants if I was there.

Hedberg was a comedy god who will be sorely missed.

i'll get some david cross up here.

**edit. 5 stars according to Tom Erlewine:

Comedy is hard, as many a hack has said, but comedy albums are even harder. Consider this: there was an explosion of comedians in the '80s and '90s, yet there hadn't been a classic comedy album since Bill Hicks. Both the standard-bearer of '90s standup, Jerry Seinfeld, and Los Angeles' vital alternative comedy scene of the '90s failed to produce an album of note, so it then seemed like the comedy album was dead and buried in 2002. Then, David Cross -- best known as the "David" of the brilliant Mr. Show With Bob & David, the greatest sketch comedy show in history -- did a whirlwind tour of rock clubs in the spring of 2002, releasing highlights from the tour (culled mainly from Portland and Atlanta dates) as the Shut Up, You Fucking Baby! album on Sub Pop that fall. It would be hyperbole to say that it revitalizes the genre -- one album can't do that, and it's doubtful that anybody else would be given the freedom Cross was accorded here -- but it is no stretch to say that it's one of the greatest albums in recorded comedy history. Cross' genius is that he not only fearlessly tackles political, social, and religious issues that his contemporaries dance around, he also eases from stinging satire to absurdity during the course of narratives that seemingly ramble but always wind back to their main theme. When everybody else treats George W. Bush with kid gloves, Cross tears into him with savage humor and logic, dissecting everything from the war on terrorism and Bush's reaction to 9-11 ("Nader would have f*cking bombed Afghanistan...What did we expect he was gonna do? The planes hit and he's gonna hole up in a Motel 8 with a bottle of Jack, just crying in a corner?") to his family history, the 300 dollar tax refund, and position on SDI, not just cracking jokes, but cutting to the political quick the way no pundit has had the guts to do. The Catholic Church and John Ashcroft are subject to similar rants, but the key isn't that Cross is preaching to the converted or just reciting "liberal" lines -- he offers biting, informed criticism that only a comedian could possibly deliver. It's not all religion and politics, though: just as funny are Cross' reading of a story from the Promise Keepers handbook, recounting a night of debauchery with Harlow, and exposing the absurdities in Cosi's marketing plan for Squaggels, their square bagel. It's standup at its finest -- fierce, angry, freewheeling, and hysterically funny. The recording is so good it's just icing on the cake that the packaging is a wonderful knowing parody: none of the song titles have anything to do with the routine at hand, they're either send-ups of comedy warhorses ("Sex on the Internet!?," "My Wife's Crazy!") or cheerfully vulgar parodies ("Shaving the Pope's Pussy," "Abortion Doctor From Hell!"), while the acknowledgements include "First of all thanks to God, for giving me a voice with which to sing. God, you are brave, bold and beautiful and, I don't even believe in you! Your ways truly are mysterious." It all adds up to a wonderful comedy record, the best in years, and one of the best showcases of a genius comic at the top of his game.

I'll see if I can upload a few things sometime soon (I'm on a college network that limits my bandwith, so no guarantees about anything yet).

I thought some people might be interested in this: Comedians of Comedy Tour featuring Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Maria Bamford and Eugene Mirman, April 28, Logan Square Auditorium.

Yeah, that Hedberg show was amazing. I was actually talking about it today to a friend who I saw Hedberg with once before when he was on tour with Lewis Black and Dave Attell. Good stuff.

And this is a good thread I must say.

Great thread,

1. Patton Oswalt is the best comedian out there today
2. David Cross sucks and is totally overated and self-serving
3. Mitch Hedberg was very funny and any comedian that bombs and stays on stage to finish his set is great
4. Bill Hicks is the greatest stand up of all time, I dont know how to YSI but if I did I would post some Hicks and some Kinnison
Ben
Hicks is the best.

Does anyone have any Lenny Bruce or Stephen Wright?

It's hard to compare the two, because their comedy was completely different.

I think Pyror was a better stand-up. I can't quantify that one is funnier than the other. That's impossible.

I never could find any of Galifanakis' standup anywhere, but yeah, he easily destroyed all on the Comedians of Comedy flick. Shame he only seems to tour the coasts, and never Chicago or the midwest. Dude is freaking hysterical.

I do have this, however from his email list....

Daniel Kitson is probably the finest UK stand up there is at the moment. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Kitson) Doesn't have any material CD but this bootleg of him re-rehearsing his Edinburgh show from the summer in a small Brixton pub before taking on the road this past few months. It does ramble from the start and I doubt that it will appeal to all but.

I'm not claiming that Dane Cook is destined to be a comedy great, but this first CD of his Harmful If Swallowed is the funniest comedy Cd i'v ever heard. It is pretty consistant and more solid than any of his live shows i've seen.

I seriously like alot of this cd. Have been yelling "Squible-dee-doo!" for like a week since I first heard this disc. Thanks for the posting of it!

I would say Oswalt is by no means the best comedian out there today and say Zack Galifinakis is better than him, but he is very good none the less. I think actually listening to this disc more and more, Oswalt rips off David Cross a whole lot in delivery and joke styles. Still good, reagrdless.

yeah, i agree 100%. it's the same kind of storytelling and "yell the punchline" technique that, IMO, cross does better.

Patton and David Cross are the same type of comic who came up in the same generation and all of that, their delivery is similar because if I'm not mistaken, they came up together.

I wouldn't say Cross is outright better, but to say Oswalt rips him off is pretty lame.

i don't think hewlett or i are saying (and i don't want to speak for hewlett, but it seems we have similar tastes) that cross DOES it better, it's just that cross has better material. at least that's my opinion. if you listen to the oswalt album it's definitely not bad by any stretch; it's just not as good as david cross's stuff which it's very easy to relate it to.

Derek and Clive - "Ad Nauseam"
CODE
http://s56.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=35HMYM7Z50XTL1OK7JEJTDC96P

Derek and Clive Ad Nauseam is the third and final recording made by Peter Cook and Dudley Moore of their characters Derek and Clive. The record is difficult to listen to in places as it also charts the breakup of their partnership. Moore walked out before the end of this recording, unable to cope with Cook's drunken verbal attacks any longer. The two never worked on a major project again. Cook filmed some of the proceedings and these were released on the documentary Derek and Clive Get the Horn.

The comedy on these three albums is rough, improvised stuff delivered by a clearly inebriated Cook and Moore. There is much which is still shocking today: Derek and Clive argue, screeching expletives at each other. There are moments of sheer brilliance, however: Cook's sketch "Horse Racing", a masterpiece of vulgar double-entendre and the rambling 25 minute piece "The Horn", which ends
in a vicious spoof of the Moonlight Sonata

One of the great things about having XM is channel 150, the uncensored comedy channel. Having 2 young kids and a wife who doesn't appreciate "edgy" comedy, I'd been out of the loop on a lot of these people since the mid-90s. For instance, I had heard the name David Cross and knew of his feud with Mr. Hick, but didn't know he was the "chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie!" guy. Never put those two things together until Isaw the cover of his album in this thread.

Along with Hicks, there are 2 comedians who died in the early 90s I've always liked. One was Dennis Wolfberg, who wasn't the edgiest guy and told a bunch of pretty safe, by comparison, type jokes, but his delivery and especially his looks, made his routine great. I have no audio of him, but only video would do his act justice.

The other is probably my favorite comic of all time, and another who died an early death - Robin Harris. Here's a YSI of his album. You might remember him as Pop from House Party and the animated movie Bebe's Kids, which was made after his death based on one of his best-known routines. He was also in a bunch of movies like Mo Better Blues, Do the Right Thing, and Harlem Nights.

The highlights of this show are him giving the mostly black audience shit for supporting the Compton lifestyle and calling out NWA, and the piccolo player joke, which he turned from a pretty simple joke into an hilarious one, simply by his telling of it. Great, great show.

I am trying to go to the show. It's a few days before my birthday, so I'm trying to round some people up and head out there for a night of comedy and perhaps bars. We'll see how it all turns out. If Galifinakis was on the bill, I would be there in a heartbeat.

"Rip off" is probably the wrong word, but they do have many similarities in their joke styles, deliveries, et cetera. And I am definitely not saying Cross is outright better, but overall after listening to Cross cd vs. Patton's, I find myself laughing more and quoting more of Cross'. But I think that sometimes Cross gets a little TOO longwinded and too preachy on his cd, but overall I would say it's the better of the two.
I mean, seriously, what's not hilarious about Cross' bit on SQUAGLES?
