They were great the last time I saw them.

last time i saw them they opened up for My Bloody Valentine on the Loveless tour. i went to see Buffal Tom, never really knew about MBV until that nite. MBV were unbelievable, Buffalo Tom was just Buffalo Tom, solid little power trio as always.

i'm kind of excited for this.

edit: realizing now that i did see them twice after that first time. those were my stupid marijuana years.

I am so at that Double Door show.
sin city
I saw them at Metro several years back- a band by the name of Dolly Varden opened for them. Seem to remember reading about them somewhere on the board...

Good show by both bands.

I gave the new one about 5 spins when I first got it and haven't gone back to it
yet. It didn't grab me like LMCO or BRLD did upon the first few listens. But I
must say I had "September Shirt" (I think it's the first single on the new record) in
my head all day today. Between that and this thread I am going to re-investigate
the new one and will report back.

Big Red Letter Day is a fucking masterpiece if you ask me.

the self titled one is real muddy and dirtier sounding than all of the other ones, has some great songs. definitely influenced by J Mascis as producer. i forgot that it came out on SST, i'm looking at it now and it makes me feel old. you can buy it on amazon used for like 2 bucks.

any of you guys ever listen to Cold Water Flat? it's Janovitz's brother's band, very similar to BT. pretty sure they were one of the last bands to record at Fort Apache Studios. seek it out...
_______
here's a song called Impossible from the debut that sounds exactly like Dinosaur Jr, pretty sure that's Mascis soloing on it too:

I'm hardly a Buffalo Tom expert, but I've always understood that Big Red Letter Day, while nice, pales in comparison to earlier records, like Let Me Come Over and Birdbrain. Kinda like their Grave Dancers Union.

right.

some people seem to think that, but i've always disagreed, even though Let Me Come Over was the first BT album I bought in '93, then BRLD shortly thereafter.
Let Me Come Over is my 2nd favorite behind BRLD, but Birdbrain sounds kinda shitty and just doesn't have nearly as great of songs for me.

i rarely tend to agree w/ the status quo though, like with Built To Spill, seems as though critically, most people tend to feel Perfect From Now On is their best record, but for me it's Keep It Like A Secret by FAR, with Nothing Wrong With Love a close 2nd and PFNO 3rd. most of my hardcore BTS fan friends like KILAS the best too though *shrug*.

I guess I just find Big Red Letter to be a little polished. I agree with you on Birdbrain, it's a bit of a mess, though I'd say if I came to the party upon its release, at that age, I'd've loved it, I'm sure.

Big Red Letter just sounded a little too radio-friendly. No edge. Let Me Come Over, now that album had edge.

fair enough.

myself, i have nothing wrong with something sounding "radio friendly" a lot of the time as long as it's not overly glossy (which compared to a lot of 90's alternarock, BLRD doesn't sound THAT polished to me.)

polished or production aside, i just feel that the songs on BLRD are superior almost across the board, but i do love LMCO a lot. i even liked quite a bit of Sleepy Eyed too, which was even more "radio friendly" sounding than BLRD.

Returned to the new one (Three Easy Pieces) and gave it a spin. It's ok to good. If BRLD was an A+ and LMCO is
an A, then TEP is a B-.

Kessler: I am a self proclaimed BT superfan\expert\whatever. While LMCO over is the "critics" choice for best BT album, I bet the split between LMCO\BRLD amongst BT fans are pretty close (maybe 60/40 or even 50/50). Go start a thread on the BT or Bill Janovitz message board and survey the fans.

Anyway, Big Red Letter Day is my favorite album of all time. Sure there are some radio friendly tunes on there but that does not make it a lesser album for the TRUE fans or anyone for that matter. The band and album have a lot going for it. Janovitz is the best storytelling lyricsist of his generation, bar none. Also the hooks. Man the hooks. 11 songs in less then 45 minutes, all of them damn near hum or sing worthy.

Regarding Janovitz's solo albums, "Lonesome Billy" is the best of the two ("Up to Here" being the other). It is a great gritty, country tinged record. "Shoulder", "Girl's Club" and "Red Balloon" are definately worth checking out. His version of "My Funny Valentine" I could take or leave but the rest is damn great.

The Crown Victoria album is very good as well. If you liked Janovitz's songs on "Three Easy Pieces" then you will like this album.

Oh yeah, check out their b sides compilation called Bsides. There are some great songs on there. "For all to see" (also on the No Alternative album is in my top 3 BT songs list for sure. So great.

I love BT to death, but the first time me and my best friend heard "Taillights Fade" (our first exposure to the band), we loved the song and rolled the hell out of our eyes over the lyrics.
Sooooooo many groaners in that song.
