So this is on tonight, it looks fantastic. I'm sure it will be on UKnova by tonight but I don't agree with that kind of thing.

BBC offers epic portrait of Earth

The biggest series ever made by the BBC Natural History Unit, aiming to offer the definitive portrait of the Earth, starts on BBC One on Sunday.

Planet Earth, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, took four years to make.

New technology allowed aerial shots of animals that "simply blow the mind", Sir David told BBC's Sunday AM show.

A first six-episode run of the series, with footage of some of the most remote areas and rarely-seen animals, will be followed by six more later in the year.

Sir David told Sunday AM that the series was the best he had worked in more than 50 years of natural history broadcasting.

"Every series, I think, gets better, largely because of the technology," he said.

"We can do more things better than we ever did before... you get animals you never could film before, closer, better sequences.

"The aerial shots that you will see in Planet Earth simply blow the mind - at least they blow my mind."

Series producer Alastair Fothergill said a system had been developed that kept a camera stable on a helicopter with a lens four times more powerful than those used in the past.

"In the past we were flying so low to get a close-up shot of the animals that, frankly, the animals ran away, so we avoided doing it," he said.

"With this new system we can fly at 400m, even higher, and still get a perfect close-up.

"The animals on the ground don't even know we are there, and yet we are keeping up with the action in a way we never have been able to before."

Planet Earth's makers say the series will offer numerous firsts including:

* A complete hunt by wolves filmed from the air.

* Grizzly bears in the Rockies tending newborn cubs and feeding on moths.

* Displaying birds of paradise captured with a low light camera, including the blue bird of paradise which has never been filmed in the wild before.

* Footage of a new species of blind cave fish in Thailand.

* Pink river dolphins presenting stones as gifts during courtship - the only known use of tools by wild dolphins.

The series begins with From Pole to Pole, which considers the planet as a whole and shows how the Sun dominates the lives of all animals and plants.

Planet Earth begins at 2100 GMT on BBC One.

"A complete hunt by wolves filmed from the air." - this bit was excellent. So was the mix of time lapse and aerial photography and stunning shots of a Great White Shark. The Bird of Paradise footage was more bizarre than any i've ever seen before.

It really was outstanding, glad to see my money is being spent on things like this.

So did anyone manage to watch "Monkey Dust" on Sundance?

Would you like to look through a comprehensive guide of nearly everything that has ever been on the BBC? Me too.

QUOTE

The BBC has been cataloguing and indexing its programmes since the 1920s. The development of the programme catalogue has reflected the changes in the BBC and in broadcasting over the last seventy five years. For example, in the early days of broadcasting, for both Radio and TV, the majority of programmes were broadcast live and were never recorded. There was therefore little point at the time to do extensive cataloguing and indexing of material that did not exist. As you will see, the number of catalogue entries for a day in the 1990s, far exceeds the entries for a day from the 1950s.

As recording technology developed in both mediums, the requirement to keep material for re-use also grew. If material was going to be re-used, it had to be catalogued and indexed. The original records of radio programmes were handwritten into books; over time, card catalogues were developed, and from the mid-1980s onwards there have been computer based catalogues.

This experimental catalogue database holds over 900,000 entries. It is a sub-set of the data from the internal BBC database created and maintained by the BBC’s Information and Archives department. This public version is updated daily as new records are added and updated in the main catalogue. This figure is so high because, for example, each TV news story now has an individual entry in the catalogue.

Listed below are some of the key points about the data included in this experimental prototype.

* The programmes themselves are not included for streaming or downloading.

* The catalogue is not comprehensive. It does not contain an entry for every programme broadcast by the BBC on TV and Radio since the 1920s. The main exclusions are sport, feature films, other non-BBC copyright programmes (e.g. TV series imported from the USA), some regional programming and programmes which do not exist.

* The catalogue only includes entries with a transmission date. There are no records included of material that the BBC still retains but which has not been transmitted or published.

* The full indexing for Natural History programmes has not been included. This will be added at a later date. There is a minimum level of indexing included.

* The more comprehensive catalogue entries are generally for those programmes which have been identified as having a high internal re-use and/or research value (e.g. news and factual programming). In particular, Radio programmes were only catalogued in the past if they were seen to have re-use value.

* Catalogue entries for drama and comedy programmes are usually very brief

We aspire to make some of our archive programmes available in the future. However, we do believe that the catalogue itself is also of great value as a research tool and as a guide to the places, people and subjects covered by the BBC on TV and Radio.

Comedy performance
Peter Capaldi - The Thick Of It (BBC Four)
Ashley Jensen - Extras (BBC Two)
Chris Langham - The Thick Of It (BBC Four)
Catherine Tate - The Catherine Tate Show (BBC Two)

The two The Thick Of It stars deserve this but unfortuantely I can't see Tate not winnning this.

Single drama
The Government Inspector (Channel 4)
Much Ado About Nothing (BBC One)
The Queen's Sister (Channel 4)
Red Dust (BBC Two)

Anything else would be plain wrong here.

Drama serial

Funland (BBC Three)
To The Ends Of The Earth (BBC Two)

Anything else would be a big shock here too.

Drama series
Bodies (BBC Three)

Not at all bothered, probably Coronation St.

Factual series
49 Up (ITV1)

Lew Grade Award for entertainment programme/series
Friday Night With Jonathan Ross (BBC One)
Have I Got News For You (BBC Two)
Strictly Come Dancing (BBC One)

Situation comedy
Extras (BBC Two)
Peep Show (Channel 4)
The Thick Of It (BBC Four)
The Worst Week Of My Life (BBC One)

Peep Show is the best show here, The Thick of It would also be a great winner but I fear that RG will take home his 7th BAFTA.

Comedy programme or series
The Catherine Tate Show (BBC2)
Creature Comforts (ITV1)
Help (BBC Two)
Little Britain (BBC One & Three)

Help is the best one but it will probably be Tate as Little Britian has really dropped in quality in the past two series.

Huw Wheldon award for specialist factual
The Boy With The Incredible Brain (Five)
Life In The Undergrowth (BBC One)
Holocaust, A Music Memorial Film From Auschwitz (BBC Two)

Flaherty award for single documentary
Children of Beslan (BBC Two)
Make Me Normal (Channel 4)
The Real Sex Traffic (Channel 4)

You're Fired!

Sport
The Ashes: England v Australia (Channel 4)
Champions league final: AC Milan v Liverpool (ITV1)

Not Forgotten/Lost Generation (Channel 4)
Shakespeare's Stories (BBC)

No idea could be any of these. Pointless award really.
Ben
What do you think of The Thick of It?
Mitchell
Outstanding. I stayed up till 11:30 to catch it on BBC4 first runlast summer. Huge fan of anything Iannucci does and Langham is a great actor. (Hopefully his problems with the police and the allegaions will go away and they can get on with the next series of 10.) Malcolm Tucker is one of my favourite characters on the TV.

I never fail to laugh at "Have you ever cleaned up your Mother's piss?"
Ben
Hmm. Why isn't UKNova letting me sign up? Is there a trick? Most of these British shows aren't on the American torrent engines.
Mitchell
Keep reloadding the front page, It *should* work eventually. It sometime says they aren't taking new members but I don't think that's ever true.
Ben
Okay. Thanks for the tip.

It’s very much like 2004: The Stupid Version. Cutting up things like that was cutting edge in 1994 but now anyone could do those clips, it was all very sub- The Day Today and smacks of “will this do” for You Tube.

Annually Retentative I do like though

Can't wait for this series! I'm watching the clips from the site, and actually, though she's no Sir David Attenborough, Sigourney's quite good. These clips and cinematography are amazing. And the music is great too. I'm so glad I got an HDTV.
