Danger Mouse - 'That's Hot' - 40: 06
This track was the track that Banksy was putting into the Paris Hilton records. Luckily for us, the song is not officially copyrighted and some Dangermouse fans put it up. The beat is generally repetitive, but I do like vamps. Halfway through, it gives way to a tune that you may remember from a Monty Python sketch (The Cheese Shop), which is promptly interrupted by Paris telling us that it is lame, she then tells us that it's hot and the music original beat kicks back in. I found it both funny and highly danceable. God I wish DJs would play this.
Laibach - Cari Amici Soldati Jaruzelsky Drzava (The State) Svoboda (Freedom) - 29:29
Yeah, it's a live track. I will try to avoid listing live tracks, as they tend to spill over, but this is a live only. Many of you will be familiar with 'Tanz Mit Laibach' and nothing else. They aren't German, I thought I may aswell tell you that now. Anyway, the song is not like the Laibach that you know, back in those days, they had a vocalist who barked instead of growling and they were more experimental. Indeed, this could proudly sit next to your TG and Cabs.
23 Skidoo - Move Back - Bite Harder (Live In Tielt, Belgium, 08/10/1982) (Digitally Remastered) - 26:54
Again, it's live, again I don't believe there are non-live versions. If you know these guys at all, you will probably be under the impression that this would be a funk orientated dancefloor filler. You would be wrong. This is from a record where they used gamelan instruments, but this is nothing like the rest of the record. A stomping tape piece.
Throbbing Gristle - Medicine/Catholic Sex - 23:28
Wait? What?
Yeah, they made the record that this is from read two sides. :S
It is a winner percisley because of the first section (Medicine). It is very high pitched and you may feel a little pain. You also hear breathing apparatus and talking. When the percussion kicks in, it's Godly.
Suicide - 23 Minutes Over Brussels - 22:56
This is a live opening set for Elvis Costello. The guests didn't take kindley to Suicides' brand of proto-Industrial music. Halarity ensues as each song ends with racious booing and a microphone is stolen.
Amon Düül II - Phallus Dei - 20:47
Fucked up Krautrock at its' best. I actually can't describe this as anything other than mindblowing. Gives Focus a run for their money anyway.
The Velvet Underground - Sister Ray - 17:31
G,F,C. I think that's basically it. It's got a good groove though and features a wonderful story. I wont spoil the plot, but it is typical of Lou Reed (Read: dark). It's a fantastic piece, basically becoming a bit of a jam session. I recommend everyone in a band to try it out.
Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music Part IV - 15:55
ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY ZAAL?! Yes, yes I am. Crazy for Lou's cock after hearing this. All done on a guitar, BTW, he claims that there is Classical music in there. It may very well be true, you'll never find it anyway. Layer upon layer of shimmering guitar. Why is this my favourite part? Best lock grove ending ever. (Exclusing comedy records)
Swans - Helpless Child - 15:47
Of course, I have to list some Swans in here you know.
What do I like about this song? Everything. Typical Swans, it starts out with a beautiful swirl of music and gives way to vamps. But this is Swans when they get on their dark ambient groove thang. Yes, it is quite pretty. It soon gives way to Giras' wonderful croon. Depressing, but beautiful. Modern so-called "Goth" bands should learn from them.
Throbbing Gristle - Exotic Functions/Violencia (The Bullet)/Oltre La Morte, Birth And Death - 15:43
Ever heard an Industrial band play Exotica? YOU SHOULD! >:O That is the first treat they have in store for us.
Then there is some more of their particular Industrial sound, then some more Easy listening.
CAN - Animal Waves - 15:31
Odd noises over an insistent funky groove.
Swans - Blood Promise - 15:23
Starts with a sample of a hymn. "We're holy lambs, who've lost our way". It loops a few times, they put on some echos. Trust me, no matter how good the song may be, it is this bit that will stick in your mind.
Gentle guitar and light percussion. Here, Gira treats us to some gentle loving and I want more.
HOWEVER, it ends with violent percussion. Rhythmic, but heavy and dismal.
Goldfrapp - Ride A White Horse (Ewan Pearson Disco Odyssey Parts 1 + 2) - 15:12
GOLDFRAPP? OK, WHOSE STOLEN ZAALS' ACCOUNT?
No, it is actually good.
LIES! >:(
No, really. Hands down, the best remix in my entire collection. Ewan Pearson has polished this turd and polished it well. Fantastic new grooves, new synths, quirky noises and it envelops more as the song progresses.
Iron Maiden - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner - 13:43
Music hardly gets better than this. This song is full of killer hooks. It is hard for a song this long to be completley danceable, but this is. The tale that it tells is from a classic Coleridge poem and words are lifted right out from the poem. Intense guitar interplay. Beautiful queit midsection and the narrator has a powerful voice.
Swans - Not Alone - 13:12
By now, you may have guessed that I am obsessed with this band. Correct. But I am obsessed for a good reason.
Reminiscient of the stabbing 'I Am The Sun' the music weaves in and out of the speakers with bile, strength and a certain shrillness. Gira gives as an opening operatic moan that Morrissey would kill for (if he were not a giant pussy). As usual, it isn't long until they are at their peak power and when they bring us back down gently, the ending music is somehow managing a balancing trick between tenderness and heaviness.
Swans - The Sound - 13:11
My favourite song over 10 minutes long. Words cannot describe the beauty. This is their greatest ambient piece. I think. Are vocals allowed in Ambient?
It SOUNDS ambient and sorrowful and Giras voice is beautiful, in top form. The fragilness of the song is only interrupted by Giras' guttural screaming at one brief point, then balance returns. It ends on a fantastic groove, with rolling drums more beautiful and more strong than the waves of the ocean.
Daniele Lombardi - Cinque Sintesi Radiofoniche - 13:07
You'll probably never hear this, unless I become a DJ at Radiogrounds (HINT MUTHAFUCKIN HINT!).
Now, you probably wont like this. In fact, if you ever hear it, you'll probably curse me to Hell for suggesting you listen to it.
HOWEVER, this is about what we like, not what we think others will like.
It is a reproduction of an F.T. Marinetti. It is essentially different soundclips. That's it. Babys crying, motor engines, a radio station going between classical stations, etc. There is no overall piece, just all these audio clips in a row. It is quite breathtaking.
Now, I like the avant-garde and I haven't listed any up till now. Well, that's because most of it doesn't hold my attention for longer than 5 minutes, but this barrage of sounds alters so much that it DOES captivate me.
Anton Maiden - Rime Of The Ancient Mariner - 12:52
Like the Iron Maiden one, but sung by a guy who doesn't speak English. Also, it is entirley electronic: midi and synths. This man was a God, there is no mistake about it. It is a shame that he killed himself before he could be an accomplished MIDI musician. I recommend you all download his stuff from his official website. (It's all free and legal).
Beastie Boys - B-Boy Bouillabaisse - 12:34
Features our boys at their silliest, most sample happy and best percussion. If you don't like this, you don't like Rap. THAT SIMPLE.
Frank Zappa & The Modern Lovers - The Return Of The Sun Of Monster Magnet - 12:17
Freak out! indeed!
A rather long piece of good rock, but extremley experimental. Contained within are monkey noises, orgasming noises, backwards music, sped up music, Suzy Creamcheese...
"Weird Al" Yankovic - Albuquerque - 11:23
I won't tell you what it's about, nor the content, I don't want to ruin the humor.
It gave me a few chuckles, the chorus (if you could call it that), is also very catchy.
Einstürzende Neubauten - NNNAAAMMM - 10:59
New No New Age Advanced Ambient Motor Music Machine.
Handclaps, motors, good Industrial fare. Good bass line aswell. I swear it is that good that it will leave you scratching your head saying "Einheit who?"
"Weird Al" Yankovic - Trapped In The Drive-Thru - 10:50
Again, I wont ruin the humor. A parody of R. Kellys' novel concept: 'Trapped In The Closet'. This song features "Weird Al" Yankovic and his band playing a segment of 'Black Dog'. believe me you must hear it.
Throbbing Gristle - Discipline (Berlin) - 10:46
Um. I am sure there is no studio version of this. The live versions have wild variying times. :S
This song, regardless, is a fantastic rant about discipline, with a beat from the percussion on each and every beat. The Manchester version clocks in at under 10 minutes, but it is more memorable, featuring a faux posh accent declaring the need for discipline.
Swans - Animus - 10:42
Here's a general fact: if it's a long Swans piece, it's gentle. (Apart from Swans live in the kitchen, that ain't gentle. I didn't include it because it's a whole live performance and technically not the one piece. You may choose to be less strict with your choosings if you wish
Anyway, Gira croons beautifully here. Typical sorrowfullness.
Television - Marquee Moon - 10:41
I don't really know what to tell you. This is the title cut from one of the greatest guitar albums ever. This band hand built the stage on CBGBs and were the first act to play there.
Their lyrics are abstract and the music is unimitatable. Just listen to it sometime.
Swans - Final Sacrifice - 10:27
Rarley is Giras vocal track as well manipulated as it is here. Not much in the way of vocals in the whole piece though.
Suicide - Frankie Teardrop - 10:26
Well, this song is a sparse Industrial song. You may think that your speaker is broken, it's not, the drum machine they used was low quality. Drum machine, one synth line and vocals with effects and WHAT A RESULT!
It tells the charming tale of Frankie Teardrop, a man who works at a factory. he loses his job and him and his family will starve. So, he takes a shotgun, kills his baby, his wife, his kids and then himself. Then, he wakes up.....IN HELL! Vega then compares us all to Frankie.
Due to the excessive screaming, play it in good company only, not your kids or anything.
David Bowie - Station To Station - 10:14
Introduces us to the Thin White Duke, reminds us of Kraftwerk (the opening actually sounds a bit like you are on a train journey. A fake tacky synthy train journey, but still).
He then launches into full song about his cocaine addiction.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cowgirl in The Sand - 10:08
This country song is so beautiful, that you don't even think it is five minutes long.
You will all notice that I forgot Kraftwerk - Autobahn - 22:43,
Quite simply, if you hate that song, I will kill you.
