How do people make shit like this? It makes no sense to me. How can you conceptualize something like that in your head?
HandBanana
Mar 24 2008, 06:54 PM

Real answer: I dunno. I see something in my head and then try to create it in the program. The two images hardly ever end up being the same, but often thats part of the process of creating what ends up being the final piece.

Another one I had posted a while back in the boards, but I cant remember where or why.
A commissioned cover for TapeOp magazine. The dark rectangle was for text placement, but that turned out to just be wishful thinking, as they ended up just running a black box over the area anyway. Made me sad.

i still love this one.
i want a copy.

holy crap, i'm kind of ticked i missed this thread when it first came out
awesome work SC! how long does it usually take to make a show poster? is it spanned across days or usually just one long stretch?
How creepy is it that I noticed SC's name is Jason?

Shit! Thread reminds me I forgot to send Simakos the art for the thing.
Thanks Haid.
It depends and is wildly variable. That Nada Surf one was probably 8 hours spread over days. Most of the time is taken up by playing with different ideas tho, so that eats the main share of the production time.

Wow, really great work, Senor. Do you ever do freelance design/illustration work for ad agencies. Our's is a B2B agency, but every once in a while we're looking for something beyond the usual industrial crap. It would be good to know you're there, if interested.

New poster for Tuesdays DBT's show
Im trying to do more one color stuff of late.
I figure if I cant rely on a cool color pallette or transparency effects, then it will force my ideas to become stronger.
Who knows.

Damn, that's disturbing! How 'bout a NSFW?
We should start a semi-rad artporium for a bunch of us to post in. I just finished an album cover, but hate to hijack the Senor Cardgage's exclusive thread.

Really appreciate all the kind words.
Im tryin to get back up to the speed I was working at a couple years ago when I did most of those.
I kind of fell off a bit when we launched the mag, as it dominated my time.
But I have a ton of new stuff on my plate right now.
DJ logo, cd design.
Doing a poster for The Kooks and a silkscreen poster for Flogging Molly that Im super excited about.

I really like this Cardgage, but ... and this it just one man's opinion ... something about the composition of that text doesn't sit right with me. The typefaces are great, but the size and placement is off.

Do you mean the text placement in the composition itself?
Like its place on the page?

That's exactly what I meant. It's gonna be hard to make it look right without it running outside the face-hole, so I can see why you have it the way it is.
Maybe you can blow it up and have the face-hole overlap the text a little bit? I don't know, that might look terrible, actually.
