linkin park (his fav.)
evanescence
panic at the disco
fall out boy
flyleaf
paramore
shiny toy guns

he doesnt know much about music and i would like to expose him to some other stuff.
what should i put on it? i like few songs by those bands but i dont know enough of the radio genre to add more.
i dont care about hipster doofus seal of approval. i need some bands that are similar to the bands mentioned above.
remember he is a kid so all the "his music tastes suck" comments are pointless.

ugh.

well, get some classic stuff on there.. the clash, rolling stones, ramones, beatles, elvis costello, all that. then maybe stuff like dino jr, weezer, etc

i swear we had a thread like this a while ago.... lemme look.

canyt find it. i think i would have loved if my parents had given me kind of a whos who of rock type mix from the get go. heres your chance to be sooo cool. consult drbill and mitchell about lists and stuff.
Mantana
Demon_Cleaner
Hot Chip
Led Zeppelin

Let us know which he prefers.
By-Tor

He doesn't need your hipster doofus seal of approval wise guy.
amartinuzzi
hmm...

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command

i liked Black Sabbath a lot when i was 13.

Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles

I feel like a 13-year-old might be able to get into the Constantines. Might be a little too guitar-bass-drums oriented compared to some of the stuff he likes.

Also, maybe some Two Gallants.

or Cursive.

Hot Chip, Of Montreal, Office, LCD Soundsystem, Justin Timberlake, Jay Reatard, most hip-hop.

Weezer, Jimmy Eat World, All-American Rejects, Rage Against The Machine, My Chemical Romance all sound like things he'd be into.
Saskadelphia
Try out the new Chiodos, it's one of the best post-hardcore albums I've heard this year.

Within Temptation (The Heart of Everything) is a much better, classier band in the Evanescence model. They predate them, actually.

Gogol Bordello, cos it's impossible to hate those guys, and they go over huge with the kiddies.

Die Mannequin's Slaughter Daughter EP is killer girl-fronted rawk. A skankier Paramore. I can hook you up if you can't find it.

In This Moment is worth a shot, they destroy Flyleaf's dunderheaded nu-metal.

LoveHateHero is another underrated emocore band, their latest CD's good.

Maylene & the Sons of Disaster combine post-hardcore with southern rawk, their album II is really good.

Waterloo
montana forgot about patrick wolf. but whatever, i actually second ^^^
Slackmo
Montana OTM, sarcasm or no.

Don't pander to 13, in any case. Definitely better to just give him stuff you genuinely dig.

honestly, the best thing you could do for your son is download a few of the SOMB decades/year-end singles countdowns, which are available on soulseek. the best are probably top 250 of 95-04, 2006 year end, and top 500 of all time. that will keep him busy for weeks and open his mind to many different kinds of music.

that way, you won't have to fish for all-american rejects and carissa's wierd albums for the next few weeks.

Don't forget Lacuna Coil, another pre-Evanescence-and-far-superior band in a similar ilk.

Otherwise, I don't listen to anything that sounds like the bands initially listed.

Rage Against the Machine - The Battle of Los Angeles

the strokes/the hives etc etc all the "rebirth of rock music" circa 2000

thats what i was going to recommend, but if the kids fave band is already linkin park, hes totally going to think tmbg are the super ghey.
Undercooked Sausage
you guys are so out of touch, 13 year olds don't have the attention span for indie, the rage recommendations and stuff like that are going to work the best. no 13 year old wants to hear a fucking of montreal album. set sail for dick
Undercooked Sausage
get him copies of dookie, nevermind, battle for los angeles, blue album, and for his 14th birthday get him OK Computer.
Undercooked Sausage
oh and get him the first garbage album

most definitely. i tried so hard to like radiohead when i was 13, 14, but i just didn't get it. not until i saw them play 'everything in it's right place' on saturday night live (kate hudson was the guest host).

totally forgot about Dookie - and Nirvana. it might be worthwhile to get him Foo Fighters' The Colour and the Shape. I realize my suggestions are a bit outdated - all I know is when I was 13 all I wanted to do was meet someone who could get me a dimebag so I could smoke weed and than bang my head to something and maybe give mom and dad the finger.

are 13-year-olds too young for Detroit Rock City? i wanted to be those guys...

I don't know, this may just be me personally, but I won't like something unless I come upon it willingly, you know. Like, I mean, someone could be waving a record in front of my face telling me it's the greatest thing ever recorded but I'm not going to give a shit unless I actually want to listen to it. I mean, this isn't to say I ignore all recommendations or anything, but if when I was 13 someone dropped a Constantines record in my lap I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Absolutely. Kids are stubborn, especially the ones into the aggro stuff. I sure as hell was when I was that age.

Best to ease the kid into new sounds by introducing him to bands under the same umbrella of his favourites, but ones that show a little more creativity and variety. Maybe include the odd left field choice, but baby steps are the way to go.
By-Tor
Sorry for my smart-ass comment earlier, but I really don't see why it has to be so goddamn compartmentalized.

When I was 13, I was learning to play guitar, so I liked the blues. Then I discovered Led Zeppelin, and I decided they were the best rock band of all time. I've listened to a shitload of genres since, but I still say that I already had it right, when I was 13.

Kids are kids. Buy him Zeppelin I.

Or buy him British Steel by Priest. Let him find out where his "metal" actually came from.
Saskadelphia
Yeah, some old school metal is a must.

And Rob Zombie. Who doesn't like Rob Zombie?
By-Tor
John Carpenter, probably.
yipyop
Gorillaz
Rainer Maria
Matson Jones
Harvey Danger (yep. Harvey Danger.)
earlier White Stripes
Refused's "The Shape of Punk to Come"
maybe even GBV's "Alien Lanes." For whatever reason, I loved that album and SDRE's "How It Feels to Be Something On" when I was 13.

and I heartily second At the Drive-In.

He's fuckin' 13, you twit! Give him some time - you, I take it, were already the premiere tastemaker at that tender age?
Rad Monkey
I'll second At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command and Rage.
I'll add....Death From Above 1979.
throughsilver
Vulgar Display of Power, by Pantera
Korn, by Korn
Roots, by Sepultura
The Burning Red, by Machine Head
Adrenaline, by Deftones
Make Yourself, by Incubus
Be Your Own Pet!, by Be Your Own Pet!
I Get Wet, by Andrew WK
The Shape of Punk to Come, by Refused
So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes, by NOFX

White Zombie, bro. Astro Creep would probably be perfect.
James D
What about Every Time I die's last two releases?

"Gutter Phenomenon" + "The Big Dirty"

Might be a bit to heavy, but the grooves are there in abundance. I can see 13 y/o's like that.

I'de endorse Led Zeppelin III. I was 13 not so long ago- LZIII was the one that pulled me out of shitty music listening at age 12.5 and allowed me to insult everybody still listening to poppunk or whatever the fuck. A few months later I bought the awesome LZ complete studio recordings (the box of which is now perfect storage for weed and condoms because parents never think to look in it!)

Bob Loblaw

they are. 13 years old was like 50 years ago for you but it was 8 years ago to me, they're all basically the same. like the same things, dress the same way, it's an important age where you're desperately trying to fit in with your peers but at the same time establish your own identity. Most everyone is depressed in middle school.

You can't just throw them into a harsh realm of indie music, you gotta start on alternative rock that sounds cool and relates to them like nirvana, then they get into the stuff kurt likes, or stuff that sounds like it that is a bit more adventurous, and go from there, all the while through this journey, they're listening to "good" music.

System Of A Down and Tubring both go into hard tuneful extremes and yet still bring some ideas and laughs to the table that will broaden your teen's mind.

Where the hell is Montana when we need him?
norton
I made this mix for my son back when he was that age and was listening to stuff like that. I was just trying to show him punk music had been around since the beginning.

GUITAR PUNKS:
Love Me -- The Phantom
Raw-Hide -- Link Wray
Brand New Cadillac -- Vince Taylor & His Playboys
I Fought the Law -- The Clash
Search & Destroy -- Iggy & The Stooges
Urban Gorilla -- Mudhoney
Kick Out The Jams -- The MC5
Electric Sweat -- The Mooney Suzuki

My Generation -- The Who
You Really Got Me -- The Kinks
Last Night -- The Strokes
Lisa Told Me -- The Hunches
Chinese Rocks -- Johnny Thunders
Rave On -- Buddy Holly
Red Hot -- Billy Riley & The Little Green
Rebel-'Rouser -- Duane Eddy
Be-Bop-A-Lula -- Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps
Bulwinkle Part II -- The Centurians
7 and 7 Is -- Love (w/ Arthur Lee)
Pushin' Too Hard -- The Seeds
Latin Lupe Lu -- Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels
Attack of the Ghost Riders -- The Ravonettes
Main Offender -- The Hives
Fell In Love With A Girl -- The White Stripes
I'm Stranded -- The Saints
New Rose -- The Damned
Blitzkreig Bop -- The Ramones
Black Slacks -- Joe Bennett & The Sparkletones
Twenty Flight Rock -- Eddie Cochran

The one's in bold are the tunes I remember him liking the most. In fact, I think his band ended up covering a couple of them.

fuck...i feel sorry for you man. for him to be a 13 year old and only know this music. i don't even know what to tell you. by the time i was 5 in 1979, i already had a diverse knowledge of music and with the 80's approaching, it was smooth sailing from then on in absorbing new music in different genres. good luck.

p.s. wipe his slate clean with the Beatles #1 and work/diverse from there.

All 13 year olds are the same. That was established firmly earlier in the thread.
