So I really want one of these. I can't decide between the red, black, pink or gold. Edit: Wait, Google shows me there's ice blue and navy too?
There's 3 pages of accessories and shit for it on
Amazon. I am clueless about this stuff. Can you guys take a look and tell me what's good? I'm willing to get needed supplies, a couple games, case, etc. Basically what do I need to keep this shit running and be a good little gamer?
Woohoo.

Dogs. Virtual dogs. You can play with them with the touch screen. They die if you don't feed them.

I don't envy your color choosing debacle; when I got mine, it was only white -- which is fine. Suppose I'd consider black if I had the choice, but meh, white's shiny.
As for accessories, there isn't much (of anything) you need. If you want some kind of system case, that'll be like $10-15, maybe some kind of case to keep the tiny games in as well. I have these little rectangular plastic things with slots for three games each, so I'll pack three or six games when I'm off covering events and the like.
In terms of games... I'll let the others chime in. I know it's my job (as a freelance games writer) to know these things, but I'm not personally a huge fan of the DS. New Super Mario Bros. is an absolute must-buy, but beyond that, it's generally a matter of taste.
Good luck, and let us know what you end up with.

You might be incorporating some Tamagotchi memories in with that -- I don't think the dogs actually
die in Nintendogs, though I could be wrong. I only played a couple hours worth.

To be honest, I'm pretty sure they don't die. I think they get sick or something and you have to heal them before you play with em. Lots for fun than tamagochi, they look really cute and do fun things. You can have them meet others' pets with the wifi stuff. My friend has it, was pretty cool.
Get some of the mind game stuff. I forget the name, but it looks pretty neat and I hear it gets fun

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is every bit as good as any Zelda game ever. Perhaps even better in that the designers really took a novel approach to the DS' physical capabilities.

My thoughts on games (repeating some that has been said before):
Elite Beat Agents: Anyone with a DS who reads a music board like this needs to own this game. THE rhythm game, the Guitar Hero equivalent, for the DS
New Super Mario Bothers: The platform game to get. Should be enjoyable for any level of gamer. Super Princess Peach, while very easy, is such a well done game that it is still enjoyable. Kirby Canvas Curse is also alot of fun, although the more recent Kirby Squeak Squad is crap.
I'm not a big fan of Nintendogs. I'd get Animal Crossing: Wild World instead, which is a completely different game but has the same sort of appeal in a weird sort of way. Animal Crossing was huge on the Gamecube. The DS version didn't do much since it is pretty much the same game. My sister, who I never thought would really get into a video game, got mometarily obsessed with Animal Crossing. As did my neice.
For a role playing game, Mario & Luigi Partners In Time is outstanding. Lots of humor. Fun, action oriented role playing/adventure game. Great entry point for role playing games.
I'm also not a big fan of the Brain Age games, the minigames are too basic. I'd rather go with Wario Ware Touched! It is not the best Wario Ware game out there (a collection of minigames) but if it is your first Wario Ware experience, it should be pretty amazing. Or go with a straightforward, but expertly crafted, puzzle game like Planet Puzzle League.
And if you want to try a more hardcore game, Castlevania Dawn Of Sorrow or Portrait Of Ruin are outstanding. Top of the line combination of platforming, role playing, and action gaming.

As for the Legend Of Zelda DS game, I would hate for anyone's first experience with Zelda to be with this game. While it's good (although I have grown to hate it personally), it pales in comparison to previous versions. If you get a Legend Of Zelda game, and you should, please track down the Game Boy Advance game Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past.
Wow, I must be drunk because I'm seeing my posts in double.

Ugh. Worst Zelda ever, though I haven't played Minish or Twilght, in my book, and I really liked Wind Waker.
That timed dungeon destroyed it.
I will heartily recommend Picross DS here.

Buy a screen protector. You're gonna scratch the fuck out of that DS. Unless you don't care about that sort of thing. A case would be good too.
I also endorse Elite Beat Agents. I spent hours trying to beat Jumpin' Jack Flash. So addicting.
Picross is a great value too. 20 bucks for an addicting puzzle game with a bajillion puzzles plus downloadable content.
Skip Phantom Hourglass. I hate the fact that you have to go back to the same dungeon multiple times. That stupid time limit mechanic with those giant enemies you can't defeat. If you're good at stealth I guess the enemies aren't that bad, but that dungeon really killed the game for me. I also hated the sailing even more than the sailing in Wind Waker. They just made poor design choices IMO.

Seriously, can everyone start playing this? So I can whoop you.
Best puzzle game on the DS.

Completely foolish advice w/r/t
Phantom Hourglass.
The imposed time limit is designed to facilitate short play sessions. Everything they did reinforces the idea that you are playing this game on the go and have the novel device that is the DS in your hand.
"Poor design". I turn my nose upward at such a statement.

I guess I just like playing long Zelda sessions. Don't get me wrong I dig some things about it like the stylus controls, and the whole drawing on the map. But yeah I can't get over going back to that timed dungeon. Agree to disagree I s'pose.

I know I want a color. I think the red and gold are more my style and match my outfits but I feel pressured into buying the pink because if anyone should have the pink it's me. Duty to wardrobe v. duty as girly consumer. Sigh...
I must choose today.

I've still got the hideous DS phat, but my brother's got a black DS Lite, and it's one of the slickest nicest looking gadgets I've ever held.
Ten games you must get:
Animal Crossing: Wild World (This is just goofy cutesy fun, can't wait for the sequel)
Mario Kart DS (Good standard mariokart-ness, some decent online play too)
New Super Mario Bros. DS (classic marioness, plenty of depth)
Super Mario 64 DS (As much fun as the 64 original, saying a lot)
Tetris DS (By far the best online competition game I've played)
Brain Age 2 (Best mini-game game, except maybe Warioware Touched, close call there)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (I've never played a Castlevania game before, but this game makes me want to try them all)
Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (Very cool noir-sketch art-style, I've never gotten deep enough into it, but what I've seen is great)
Pokemon Pearl/Diamond (I still love these anyway)
Sonic Rush (Awesome sonic game)
Still so many others I need to get on this system, almost definitely the best videogame machine out now.
