Buried at the end of
this Pitchfork news item:Moore also dropped the bomb that the band plans to support the record on tour with…the Flaming Lips! "We always had this connection through the years," he said. "I think it's great that they still exist and are still challenging. It's about time we go out traveling together."

Yeah, Sonic Youth needs to headline this. And, most importantly, Wayne needs to come up with a new schtick. The Flaming Lips current stage show, which I saw for the third time last summer, needs a total overhaul. It's getting old (although still so much better than the god-awful Soft Bulletin show I saw...)

yeah that is a weird double bill. but i'd definitely go see it as both of those bands are high up on my list of "bands i really want to see live that i've never seen live before."

I'm more excited about the prospects of seeing Jackie-O Motherfucker on a label affiliated with Universal. You have to give Thurston credit for sneaking truly underground music into the mainstream.

SY are about 100 times better than the Lips live these days. I say SY/JOMF two summers ago and it was an epic night of music.
I loved the Flaming Lips live when they played club shows and were tinnitus-inducing loud, the dancing animal/Wayne banter for half the show makes it barely worth it. Similar to their Beck tour, I would probably say no to the high prices and wait for Sonic Youth to come back around on their own.

I think this would make a great excuse for me to see the lips again, and SY for the first time. What size venues do you think they'll be filling for this tour?
Seen Sonic Youth 3 x's. One really bad (lollapalooza or some suck nonesense), one pretty darn cool with a complete destruction of the stage that was pretty cool (opening for Public Enemy), and one totally awesome in front of a small crowd at Blues Fest in Memphis.
My suspicion is they are hit or miss...
Never seen the Lips, but I'd suspect they are OK, with a couple good songs per show..
Good double bill, I don't see it as weird at all:
But, Sonic Youth should FOR SURE be headlining in my world. No doubt about that.

i've seen Sonic Youth 6 times since '00, all but 2 (and those 2 were 2 of the 3 shows opening for Pearl Jam) were fucking amazing. the one in '02 on the Murray Street tour, is still one of the best shows i've ever seen.
Lips i've only seen once, opening for and backing Beck, and it was a blast, but they're definitely glitz over musical prowess anymore.

Indeed. The Murray Street Metro show was transcendent.

Yeah, SY were on fire on the Murray Street tour. I saw them 2 nights in a row (Atlanta and Athens) and they were incredible both nights, with completely different sets. Easily their best shows since the first time I saw them on the Dirty tour.

i read an article with a bit of stuff about the new album, and Thurston mentioned the new album will be a bit more of a "return to songs", which kinda had me scratching my head, as i've felt both the last 2 albums (which are up there w/ their best stuff for me), were def a bit of a return to more traditional song structures, so i'm curious what this new album holds.

This was also in the Pitchfork piece... great news....
Lee Ranaldo fans should also rejoice in the news that the man is preparing a "singer-songwriter" album for Ecstatic Peace. For those of us who treat "Eric's Trip", "Mote", and "Wish Fulfillment" as sacred texts, this is most exciting.

The only way that this tour would be worth it is IF the Lips headlined.
Screw letting Sonic Boredom play for a longer time than Wayne & Co.

I think what he meant with this is a album full of teen age riots or an album that's Goo-esque.

From
Rolling Stone:Sonic Youth plan to tour America in support of the effort from June through September, pairing up for a handful of dates with pals the Flaming Lips. "We like each other," Moore says. "We've played together -- but it's always at some festival in Brazil or something. So we thought we should really cut across the U.S. together."
