Pitchfork Forkcast Review: “In certain circles, it's become a compliment to compare pop songs to TV jingles. Which is great, if all you hope for from music is a sudden urge to ask your doctor about the new incontinence drug. Canadian twins Tegan and Sara are unabashed masters of the genre: "I just want back in your head," they sing on "Back in Your Head", which, indeed, might lodge itself in your cerebrum almost as permanently as "By Mennen" or the latest EMF joint, "Crumbelievable". Spare piano continues as the band's aesthetic shifts: first, from Lilith Fair folk to the new wavey power-pop of 2004's So Jealous, to post-Spoon EZ-indie here (with production help from Death Cab for Cutie's generally underrated Chris Walla).

The video, directed by Jamie Travis, shows Tegan and Sara performing from a talent-show stage to a motionless crowd that's dressed like Catch-22's Soldier in White. Eventually these catatonic spectators' full-body garb changes colors, while the sisters keep repeating their oddly ambivalent moral/emotional state: "I'm not unfaithful, but I'll stray." I don't have overactive bladder syndrome, but I gotta go.”

The Hold Steady - "Stuck Between Stations"

Drowned In Sound Review: “A little earlier this year, The Hold Steady got above their station and became the most-acclaimed rock act from Over There to land Over Here since the last blew in on the wind and fucked off as fast as they arrived band from the Land of the Free to set domestic indie-boy journalistic pulses racing like a one-to-one with a Chan Marshall look-alike after a bottle or two of Jim Beam. The Why: the band sounded a lot like Bruce Springsteen. The Why: still confuses the fuck out of me.

The Hold Steady ain’t a bad band. They play piano-aided indie, ideally suited to the backroom of a bar in downtown NYC, perfectly well, and vocalist Craig Finn knows his way around a turn of phrase or five, but they’re a compositional echo of successes past, really not so relevant in a contemporary scene that has a Springsteen already. They’re intentionally restrictive in their arrangements, rarely reaching a climax or flourish here, and possess all the creative juices of Cher, post-Millennium model. ‘Stuck Between Stations’ makes sense as a title: this band haven’t particularly progressed for years.

Which, ultimately, makes their workmanlike rock for the weaker-than classes fairly redundant. A waste of time, no, but worthy of rushing outside and hollering in the streets about? Absolutely not. While Springsteen danced his way in and out of the dark, it seems The Hold Steady are destined to return to it just as speedily as their profile rocketed skyward but months ago. Obscurity beckons once more, methinks.” 5/10

The man best known for his work with the likes of Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott is, at the time of writing, riding high in the charts with his own debut album. Could it be that Björk is about to intrude upon the charts once again?

Despite the best efforts of Camille, Bat For Lashes and others influenced by Iceland's most famous export since cod, it seems longer than two years since Björk last released a single. Medullah was not a commercial record, either in outlook or in sales, but this single indicates that, with her new work, Björk has again wheeled out the synths and beats that characterised her biggest hits from Post and Homogenic.

And while the lyrics are no less barkingly nonsensical than anything she's released in her 15-year solo career to date, it's the track's booty-shaking credentials that will get it noticed. This tale of alienesque adventures is the perfect pretext for Björk to win us all over again.”

Dizzee Rascal - "Sirens"

Angry Ape Review: Sirens is not the forward-thinking, next generation of hip hop sound you'd be hoping for from a Dizzee Rascal comeback record. But in terms of a crossover single, the track is massive in every sense of the word.

Taking cues from the greats of the late 80's who first toyed with mashing up hip hop with rock like Public Enemy and Run DMC, Sirens starts with a Straight Outta Compton (NWA) feel from the crashing thunderous drums and sounds of the police, before Dizzee's narrative style lyrics recall an incident relating to his street life, growing up in inner-city London.

Then come the ground-shaking, earthquake sized metal riffs that look to the influence of the aforementioned names but in a modern day way - think Korn guitars this time, instead of Aerosmith! By fusing the two genres, Dizzee is cleverly crossing paths with two different types of music lover and broadening his potential fanbase.

It's not just grime and hip hop fans that will dig the track and as such, we may be seeing Rascal reaching the huge commercial success he so desires.

Prefixmag.com Review: “I'm not sure what I even want from the White Stripes anymore. Their just released single "Icky Thump," for all of its urgency, was kind of a mess. Now, we get wind of this newly leaked track and though it's certainly more focused, it still seems vaguely underwhelming. The kids can't win.
At the onset Jack White mixes it up, simultaneously pursuing his usual Zeppelin crunch as well as the more laid back groove of that band's "Hey Hey What Can I Do?" But Jack's pedantic lecturing fails to approximate the humid sexuality of the best British rockers gone South. I'm struggling through the usual Dixie touch points to find an appropriate comparison, because I know this reminds me of something specific. I'm genuinely concerned that it might be a half-remembered Black Crowes song still lingering in my skull from a radio transmission I once heard in high school.”

And I know people are really into the whole, “let’s pretend that Rich Boy isn’t completely garbage” thing, but I’m not hearing it. He’s pretty awful. I even listened to his eponymous NAMBLA-enticing debut twice and both times Rich Boy’s entreaties to be a “Hustla Boy Gangsta Mack” barely lured me in. Barely. Also, the “Throw Some D’s Remix” has a verse from Murphy Lee talking about how my girl has a picture of him on her wall. This is not true. I don’t date girls with pictures of St. Lunatics on my wall. In fact, I’m willing to bet that Murphy Lee’s sister doesn’t even have a picture of Murphy Lee on her wall. On the plus side, Andre 3000 kicks off his string of awesome ‘07 guest appearances, The Game rambles about Cadillacs and Jim Jones ad-libs the word, “Innocent,” while talking about his “kosher lawyers.” And sadly, this never fails to amuse me.”

Digital Spy Review: “Art Brut's new track 'Direct Hit' is a bit of an anomaly as far as music releases are concerned. Standing somewhere between rap and song, lead singer Eddie Argos marches his way through the song, avoiding that pesky harmonising by the use of spoken word instead, his voice punching hard against the repetitive, throbbing guitars and occasional pushy shouting of the remainder of the band, although they pale in comparison to the charisma he clearly exudes on stage.

It's not easy to see the likeability of this track. It's essentially three minutes of shouting alongside angry, throaty guitars, and as such it's not something immediately understandable or accessible. It's extremely representative of the way groups are trying to push the boundaries of what their band genre is termed, and it's certainly not like anything at all that you'll have heard recently. And that is what will make it a cult classic.”

Kelly strut down the aisle of a monochromatic supermarket. Tide just looks cooler when it's spray-painted black.”

And the title, which we hoped was a marketing tie-in with the Jim Carrey film of the same name, is actually "two-three", not "23." That's not to say we know what singer Kasu Makino is talking about-- her always-spectral voice blends too well with the rest of the track to catch many individual words.”

I know Twilight and a few others had it on their lists last year or saw it as a 2006 single, so it lost a few votes that way. But really, I don't think the SOMB really votes for much hip-hop outside of the Kanye-JayZ-OutKast-etc market. It also didn't garner much hipster hype the way T.I. and Chamillionaire did last year. I dunno. I'm kinda happy it even made the list.

Yeah, I just couldn't bring myself to put "Throw Some D's" on my list two years in a row, but it's even amazing that it made it on the first place considering how early in the year it hit its stride and how little mention of it as been made of it the past 6 months.
