I have heard only one fucking song on this list so far. Jesus. It's the Young Jeezy song--and that's only because I teach in an inner city school. It pops on dem computer lab speakers--herr?
Duff.
Ain't heard Rehab? The Way I Are? Both are fairly ubiquitous.

But where?

I don't listen to radio; I don't befriend Amy Winehouse fans; I'd stab my wife if she listened to either of these songs; in general I try to not get in cars where women have control of the music.
Duff.
Pff, yeah, women.

I dunno, seems anywhere you might hear music would be playing these songs.

All kidding aside, I'm really picky. And really oblivious to things going on around me, like music in bars or restaurants. Some of these sound like a bunch of shit, though, so I doubt I'm missing a lot.

I take it back: I've heard the Wilco song, too. See. Fuck. I missed a whole page--I've heard the Menomena, which I love.

And I've heard "Throw Some D's" --again via the computer lab.

Liars – Plaster Casts Of Everything

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Forkcast Review: "Liars! The Berlin-via-Brooklyn avant-punks talked about a "chilled-out vibe" for their self-titled fourth album, but its opening track (and forthcoming first single), "Plaster Casts of Everything", should set somebody's pants on fire. Confounding expectations once again, Liars' follow-up to last year's abstract, mountainous Drum's Not Dead starts with...a rock song. Drum's tribal rhythms and high-pitched vocal ululations remain, but here the fiery axe-work is an equally important focus. "I wanna run away/ I wanna bring you, too," frontman Angus Andrew repeats like a heavy-metal Dan Deacon serenading his rattlesnake gun, while distorted guitars thrash just as much as they drone. This stream will only be up for 48 hours, so listen while you can as Andrew rains down what sounds like a "sweet massacre of death."

You know it's a good year when you see the "ranked highest by" boarder and you think to yourself, "No WAY, I must've placed it higher than (s)he did," but then you look at your list and you realize that, no, damn, shit, there are songs - at least 11 of them, sometimes as many as 36 - even BETTER than that one.

Anyway, "Plaster Casts of Everything" is fucking great and should be higher, IMO. Like, um, twelfth.

I too will be getting drunk tonight.

Róisín Murphy - Overpowered

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #149

Pitchfork Forkcast Review: "After getting a start with trip-hoppers Moloko, singer Róisín Murphy moved to high-concept pop on her 2005 solo debut, Ruby Blue, a collaboration with UK house and techno producer Matthew Herbert. "Overpowered", the first single from her forthcoming second album, mixes the eccentric pop of Ruby Blue songs like "If We're in Love" with bubbly, acid-warped synths and filtered snare hits. Now you've got something to play if Glass Candy's "I Always Say Yes" starts wearing thin.

Co-written by Seiji of London broken-beats collective Bugz in the Attic, "Overpowered" drops the horns, reeds, and micro-edited electronics of Murphy's last outing for pristine disco chic and dusky, multi-layered vocals. Lyrically, it's at once standard pop fare and strikingly odd, obsessed with chemicals. "When I think that I'm over you, I'm overpowered," Murphy begins, going on to sing about chromosomes, oxytoxins, and "alien feelings we have to accept." Pass the chemicals?"

Dan Le Sac vs. Scrobbius Pup – Thou Shalt Always Kill

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #30

Pitchfork Forkcast Review: "Radio may by steered by Akon, Justin Timberlake, and Lil' Wayne in North America, but in Britain, it still has the endearing propensity for turning the odd underdog into man of the hour. This track-- a joint collaboration between sorta-rapper Scroobious Pip and knob-twiddler Dan Le Sac-- debuted to tremendous response on London radio sometime around the beginning of the year; with Lex now set to re-release it over three months and thousands of requests later, it shows no sign of going away any time soon.

A spoken word list of Thou Shalt Nots that ranges from sensible ("Thou shalt not steal if there is a direct victim") and practical ("Thou shalt not go into the woods with your boyfriend's best friend, take drugs and cheat on him") to pointed ("Thou shalt not return to the same club or bar week in, week out just 'cause you once saw a girl there that you fancied but you're never gonna fucking talk to") and vaguely embarrassing ("Thou shalt remember that guns, bitches and bling were never part of the four elements and never will be"), "Thou Shalt Always Kill" is a manifesto song that follows in the fine tradition of Art Brut, the Streets, and, um, Baz Luhrmann. Between Le Sac's sproingy electronic textures and the song's middle verse, wherein Pip lays everyone from the Beatles to Radiohead to waste by soberly reminding us they were all "just a band," there's loads to like here. Something tells me there's a shelf-life, though, so get your fix before sunscreen season. "

1) Roisin has the best fucking covers.

2) Knob Creek is pretty good. Once you're into it, though, check out the small batch bourbons, especially Basil Hayden's, which is a strange - but amazing - bourbon.

3) I definitely plan on just doing this tonight. Ok, I'm also gonna' play Halo, listen to (in this order) Paranoid, Reign in Blood, and Yank Crime. And also play some Halo. My wife is out. of. town. Sucks, but this kinda makes up for it.

Mika – Grace Kelly

US Chart Position
: #57

UK Chart Position: #1

musicOMH.com Review: "If you've been casting your eye amongst the many 'ones to watch in 2007' articles that appear this time of year, then you'll have seen one name mentioned more than most. Mika, a 23-year-old singer born in Beirut and raised in London, has already got the critics very excited, and his blend of electronica and easy listening could well be inescapable throughout the next 12 months.

Indeed if Grace Kelly is anything to go by, it's hard to see where he can fail. Insanely catchy, it very obviously owes a huge debt to the Scissor Sisters, but there's more than a hint of Queen in there as well. Mika's voice is very reminiscent of Freddie Mercury, a fact he seems to acknowledge in the line "so I tried a little Freddie" before launching into a pitch-perfect impression of the moustachioed one.

Yes, it may feel a little forced at times (you can almost imagine a marketing man shouting "quick, we need a Scissor Sisters for those people who bought The Feeling's album"), but ultimately this is uplifting, joyous pop, perfect for the post-Christmas blues."

Jens Lekman – The Opposite Of Hallelujah

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Forkcast Review: "New Jens Lekman single "The Opposite of Hallelujah" isn't all that new; it appeared on a little-known EP of the same name two years ago. As a taste of Lekman's forthcoming Night Falls Over Kortedala, however, it's pretty much what we'd have wanted from the Swedish popster behind 2004's When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog and 2005's Best New Music-decorated Oh You're So Silent Jens. In short, it's another witty, homemade step forward in the tradition of happy-sounding sad songs that runs through the Smiths all the way back to 60s girl groups.

Lekman's whimsically downcast lyrics jump from a complicated meta-metaphor involving hermit crabs to a snappy "Where you at?" retort, but our eloquent protagonist knows no one knows what he's going through-- least of all his happy-go-lucky sister. But the song's lo-fi Motown bounce tells a different story, one narrated by piano, glockenspiel (xylophone?), and jaunty strings. So, is it the opposite of "Hallelujah"? Well, "it's the opposite of being you," Lekman sings, his voice finding a middle ground between Stuart Murdoch fey and Stephin Merritt fop. So, it's the opposite of cold, anyway. And the only thing broken is someone's heart. But you don't really care for music, do you? "

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Is Is - EP

US Chart Position
: #72 Albums

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Review: "Even when she's singing, she still punctuates her words with an arsenal of onomatopoeia: the girlish ah-ahs on "10x10" contrasting the wounded, nearly spoken intro; the yowls that precede the chorus on "Down Boy"; the throat-scraping growl on the title track. Each aspect of her stage identity finds equal expression on these songs, which only makes them sound more immediate and affecting. In fact, Is Is may be their most instantly accessible release, which is not a critical dig but just a way of saying it finds a good balance between alienating and inviting, between song and performance. This dynamic could sustain an entire album, but the EP's brevity is the key to its appeal: the Yeah Yeah Yeahs know enough to leave you wanting more."

Fall Out Boy – Thnks Fr Th Mmrs

US Chart Position
: #11

UK Chart Position: #12

Drowned In Sound Review: "Super-glossy production drenching this, the stupidly-titled second single lifted from Fall Out Boy’s Infinity On High LP, can’t save it from being interpreted as just another routine, production-line pop-emo piece of three-and-something minute hook-filled chart fodder. But then again, if something ain’t broke…

The Chicago quartet have perfected their chosen art, chiselling humungous riffs off at the edges and sanding the roughness away to allow silky pop drapes to slide on over the top of their by-the-book creations. This is thrilling stuff if you’re a ten-year-old just taking their first steps in the world of rock music, but anyone with water under the bridge is sure to find ‘Thnks Fr Th Mmrs’ just as over-egged, despite its best efforts to separate itself from the pack spawned in its makers’ successful wake, as anything else in Fall Out Boy’s gooey back catalogue.

Entirely inoffensive and far from turn this off right now-able, this song’s a radio hit for sure, and the existing hardcore are certain to see it as another step towards everlasting fame for these punk-rock-schooled megastars in below-the-radar band tees. Fall Out Boy have worked for their current status as lynchpins of a scene genuinely bulging with makeweights, and their ability to knock out excellently realised pop-rock is admirable. But will this single change the minds of those already exasperated by the band’s saccharine delivery and teenage angst lyricism?

Nope. But then again, if something ain’t broke…"
