Chromeo – Bonafied’ Lovin (Tough Guys)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

noize + makes + enemies Review: "Two best friends forming a band is perhaps not the most original starting point to begin a musical crusade but for Chromeo, the result was something far from imitated.

As with many Electro Pop bands, although Chromeo released their debut album ‘She’s in Control’ in 2004, their silky injections of funk have yet to receive the acknowledgement seemingly deserved. Yet perhaps this is not such a negative factor within a genre that’s demographic often rejects bands that become catapulted into the mainstream.

‘Bonafied Lovin’ is the second single to be released from album ‘Fancy Footwork’ (2007) and is a fusion of smooth electro that enters your body grasping hold in a way that refuses to allow any dancing refrain.

Dave 1’s cocky vocals: “..This comes as no surprise, what you need is an older guy” and electronic guitar solos conjure a combination that is reminiscent of Protocol’s Electro Pop teamed with Orson inspired hooks. That is, if Orson had had more credibility.

‘Bonafied Lovin’ has all the arrogant self-assurance of hip hop which when mixed with electro beats creates a single that more contagious than Facebook stalking."

Rihanna – Shut Up And Drive

US Chart Position
: #15 / #1 Hot Dance Club Play

UK Chart Position: #5

top40.about.com Review: "2 years ago it was easy to suspect Rihanna might be a one-hit wonder. Her first single "Pon De Replay", with its peppy mix that focused more on the percussion than Rihanna's admittedly thin vocals, seemed destined to be a fun summer memory, but not really a song to build a career around. Now, with a series of distinctive top 5 hits, Rihanna has established herself as the most consistent pop hitmaker of the moment.

One of the big keys to her success is that every single has genuinely sounded different. Whether it's the moody drama of "Unfaithful," the peak hour dance heat of "SOS," or stately urban pop of the #1 smash "Umbrella," Rihanna's sound and style seem to be reinvented for every record. This time she follows on the heels of "Party Like a Rockstar," the smash rock and hip hop collaboration by Atlanta's Shop Boyz, with a roaring blend of hair metal guitars and 80's style synth effects.

The lyrics are pure fluff, and the vocals have the now familiar thin and reedy quality common to many of Rihanna's efforts. However, like any successful sports car, the look, feel, and speed of "Shut Up and Drive" pull you in despite the model's shortcomings. Tuck this one away on the iPod beside 80's classics like Pebble's "Mercedes Boy," Natalie Cole's "Pink Cadillac," and Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love" and head out for a hot summer drive.

Pros

* Crunchy pop-metal guitars
* Fun, summer singalong atmosphere
* Sexy and sleek sportscar feel

Cons

* Pure fluff lyrically

Description

* Begins with huge guitar power chords
* Settles into a buzzing, poppy bounce
* Rihanna's now familiar voice a constant throughout"

Dan Deacon – The Crystal Cat

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Forkcast Review: "Baltimore's oddball electronic-popster Dan Deacon just released one of the year's best albums, Spiderman of the Rings. But he built up much of his early following with a reputation for live shows that are as fun as third-grade birthday parties. Directed by fellow Wham City collective member Jimmy Joe Roche, the video for Deacon's "The Crystal Cat" mixes the sublime weirdness of the record and the dorky, giddy weirdness of the live show, and then throws in some flat-out weird weirdness. This is awesome. Studio and live footage of Deacon in sweats, a bright yellow hat, and his signature goofy glasses gets interspersed alongside (and sometimes beneath) Roche's crazy visual effects, which involve psychedelic patterns and plenty of dudes with mustaches. And now I finally know what a crystal cat looks like."

Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey - EP

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Review: "Nearly three months have passed since Atlanta psych-rock quintet Deerhunter released their mammoth second full-length, Cryptograms. Now, Kranky is putting out the Fluorescent Grey EP, a set of four intensely focused songs recorded while the album was being mixed. Though clearer and less abrasive than Cryptograms musically, the new EP foregrounds lead singer Bradford Cox's morbidly erotic lyrics about the body's inevitable decomposition-- to him, a psychosexual puzzle-- much as the full-length smothered its gorgeous melodies in effects-laden squall and instrumental ambience. Whether Fluorescent Grey is meant to serve as an epilogue (as its press release maintains) or prologue, the disc is a triumphant document of a stubbornly visionary young band with the world still spread out before them."

1990s – See You At The Lights / Super Legal (feat. Lovefoxxx) / Diabo

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #106

musicOMH.com Review: "There's a hairy moment near the start of the 1990s' new single See You at the Lights. It's when Jackie says "Hey" in that Americanised rock 'n' roll style and you dread the fake dissolution of myriad industry heroes. Thank God then that 1990s turn out to be more of the magic pop ilk of The Little Ones than the payola pop of Razorlight.

See You at the Lights bounces out of the stereo like Supergrass if they still had legs, all ebullient abstract dah dah dahing and lunar guitar nudging you towards the stars with wide smiles. It's an untainted new wave magic that brings its own poignancy, and when sultry, sensual Brazilian goddess Lovefoxxx of CSS augments the B-side with quintessentially cool giggling the effect is sealed.

Smart and razor-sharp, 1990s have a humble craft to die for. All pretension is left at the door and the night is danced away. Fantastic."

Timbaland – Give It To Me (feat. Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake)

US Chart Position
: #1

UK Chart Position: #1

Pitchfork Review: "Hip-hop's unchallenged pop auteur, à la Brian Eno, Timbaland has parlayed his subtle experiments in bottom-heavy orientalism into that rara avis: commercial success and critical acclaim. Leaked from his second proper solo album (absent Magoo, that is), "Give It To Me" exhibits a talent immune to formula, a miracle of bankable avant-gardism. The opening verse sustains Nelly Furtado's rebirth as a sexpot, flowing from a moment of opacity ("Amnesty International got bankrupt") toward a moment of self-consciousness ("You love my ass and my abs and the video called 'Promiscuous'").

Fulcrum that he is, Timb takes the middle verse, building a mountain of serene, nothing-to-prove braggadocio that transcends Billboard rankings: "Your song gonna top the charts, I heard 'em, I'm not a fan-n-n-n-n." The beat on this track alone-- another stuttering, spectral, densely layered marvel-- certifies this unyielding faith in his aesthetic. Where the sliced-and-diced syllables of "Stay Fly" were stylistic flourishes, here they're utilitarian, reshaping lines in the mold of the wheeling, serpentine melody. On cue, Justin Timberlake shimmers in for the farewell verse, distilling the essence of "Give It To Me", with its preening vanity and halting carnal rhythms, into one question: "Now if se-sexy never left, then why's everybody on my shit-it-it?"" 5/5

Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová – Falling Slowly

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

mxdwn.com Review: "Most soundtracks are scored to solely accompany an existing story. The songs penned for John Carney's film Once are the backbone and emotional soul of the movie. The film's stars and resident songwriters, The Frames' lead singer Glen Hansard and Czech musician Marketa Irglova, tell a tale of two wayward spirits adrift in misery over prior relationships.

When the two characters meet they instantly establish an effortless connection and chemistry through their musical talents. On "Falling Slowly" the words build in passion, starting as a tragic murmur ("I don't know you / but I want you") then swelling into a heartwarming refrain ("Take this sinking boat / and point it home / we've still got time / raise your hopeful voice / you have a choice / you've made it now") over plucked guitar and piano. Of Montreal – Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Review: "From their album that won't come out until next year, "Heimdalsgate" takes up the drugs-as-artistic-inspiration vs. drugs-as-personal-ruin dilemma and plays it out with equally conflicted musical gestures. "I'm in a crisis/ I need help/ Come on mood-shift/ Shift back to good again," sings Kevin Barnes over some rocky keyboard; in appropriate zero-to-60 fashion, the song is suddenly riding a synth riff into the "thorny path" Barnes conveniently forgot he created. Submerged in denial, he insists, "Chemicals don't strangle my pen/ Chemicals don't make me sick again"-- which is brilliant, because it's just as much a plea for mercy, i.e. "Chemicals, don't strangle my pen!" "Heimdalsgate" is one of the more breakneck, "old Of Montreal"-styled songs on an otherwise discofunk-lite album, bringing proper attention to itself without overextending its theme." 3.5/5

My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words

US Chart Position
: #88 / #4 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #8

Pedigree Music Review: ""Famous Last Words" is the new song by My Chemical Romance and is taken off their sophomore album The Black Parade.

The video for the song was filmed back-to-back with the video for "Welcome To The Black Parade" and they both feature similar sets and the songs contain similar related themes. The set for this song is merely a darkened version of the set from their previous release ("Welcome To The Black Parade"). The band are playing in front of flaming props that are also used in The Black Parade single.

The album centers around a character we only know as "The Patient" who suffered an untimely death at a young age. Gerard Way plays the patient in this video, looking very ill, like he is dying.

If you listen to the lyrics you realize how deep this song is. The patient basically says that if he lives, he lives. If he dies, he dies. He is not afraid either way. He does want to live though.

The song is quite rocky, which is different to "Welcome To The Black Parade" which I found more punk-rocky, and much different to songs from their previous album Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge which I found to be a very punk-pop style album (which didn't appeal to me as much as their more rockier stuff).

In terms of the music, it is very simple. The song isn't difficult to play and is pretty basic and stereotypical of an 80's heavy rock/metal song. Saying that, the lyrics that are incorporated into the song really show off the talent and skill that the band members possess (particularly Way).

I'd say pretty poor song, pretty good lyrics - it balances out to be an OK song.

I'd rate this song 6/10. It's not going to be as popular as "Welcome To The Black Parade", but I doubt anything they make in the future will be as good as that one."

Soulja Boy – Crank That (Soulja Boy) / Crank That (Travis Barker Remix)

US Chart Position
: #1

UK Chart Position: #3

PlanetWisdom.com Review: "Soulja Boy’s first debut single “Crank That” has been sitting at the top of the charts for weeks. Its infectious beat is hard for the dancers to resist -- even more so when Soulja Boy himself offers a free step-by-step lesson guaranteed to make you an expert.

Keeping in mind that baggy clothes and hip/hop style don’t make music immoral, neither do great beats make songs worthwhile. In the words of a famous TV show, don’t forget the lyrics! The entire song is basically about Soulja Boy doing his dance at parties, getting the girls, and all the “haterz” being jealous because they’re not like him. Much of the song commands us to watch him perform the various moves; most lines start with “watch me.”

“Watch me crank it / Watch me roll / Watch me crank dat Soulja Boy.” He ends the song by encouraging others to dance the Soulja Boy, then insulting those who try. It’s amazing fans still have the courage to try the dance and then upload their performances all over his website!

The most disappointing aspect of this song is the attitude behind the lyrics. I know bragging and mocking others is part of hip/hop culture. But Soulja Boy lays it on a little thick for a 17-year-old rookie. He doesn’t pretend to have any amount of humility or respect for other people.

The song and dance is all about him with an arrogant, in-your-face approach that’s practically begging for a fight. It’s a sort of pompous, pretentious song meant to make him feel more powerful by building himself up and bringing others down. By the end of the song, I’m a little tired of listening to him brag about his dance skills.

God warns us over and over again not to be prideful. It keeps us from truly seeking God by distorting our view of ourselves. If we’re not careful, we can fall into the trap of thinking that we are equal with God. Let’s be careful to keep a clear perspective on our place in the world. We’re all just people who need God. Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

So while the beat is fun, the dance is fun, and even the music video has some pretty hilarious moments, the attitude behind “Crank That” puts me off really wanting to listen to it. Aside from that, I’m a little surprised “Crank That” doesn’t come with a stronger parental warning given the profanity and brief-but-crude sexual references."
