Soulja Boy – Crank That (Soulja Boy) / Crank That (Travis Barker Remix)[/size]

PlanetWisdom.com Review: "Soulja Boy’s first debut single “Crank That” has been sitting at the top of the charts for weeks. Its infectious beat is hard for the dancers to resist -- even more so when Soulja Boy himself offers a free step-by-step lesson guaranteed to make you an expert.

Keeping in mind that baggy clothes and hip/hop style don’t make music immoral, neither do great beats make songs worthwhile. In the words of a famous TV show, don’t forget the lyrics! The entire song is basically about Soulja Boy doing his dance at parties, getting the girls, and all the “haterz” being jealous because they’re not like him. Much of the song commands us to watch him perform the various moves; most lines start with “watch me.”

“Watch me crank it / Watch me roll / Watch me crank dat Soulja Boy.” He ends the song by encouraging others to dance the Soulja Boy, then insulting those who try. It’s amazing fans still have the courage to try the dance and then upload their performances all over his website!

The most disappointing aspect of this song is the attitude behind the lyrics. I know bragging and mocking others is part of hip/hop culture. But Soulja Boy lays it on a little thick for a 17-year-old rookie. He doesn’t pretend to have any amount of humility or respect for other people.

The song and dance is all about him with an arrogant, in-your-face approach that’s practically begging for a fight. It’s a sort of pompous, pretentious song meant to make him feel more powerful by building himself up and bringing others down. By the end of the song, I’m a little tired of listening to him brag about his dance skills.

God warns us over and over again not to be prideful. It keeps us from truly seeking God by distorting our view of ourselves. If we’re not careful, we can fall into the trap of thinking that we are equal with God. Let’s be careful to keep a clear perspective on our place in the world. We’re all just people who need God. Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

So while the beat is fun, the dance is fun, and even the music video has some pretty hilarious moments, the attitude behind “Crank That” puts me off really wanting to listen to it. Aside from that, I’m a little surprised “Crank That” doesn’t come with a stronger parental warning given the profanity and brief-but-crude sexual references."

Greatest Review Ever. Even if #1 is something crappy like Arcade Fire, I won't care, because that write-up was AMAZING. By far my favourite part is "I know bragging and mocking others is part of hip/hop culture. But Soulja Boy lays it on a little thick for a 17-year-old rookie. He doesn’t pretend to have any amount of humility or respect for other people."

To those who don't understand Chromeo, I dunno what to tell you. If you don't immediately want to shake your ass and sing along to "Bonafied Lovin'," you're missing everything. Or nothing. Either way, it's not some kind of cerebral crap you can be talked into liking.

Really kicking myself for sleeping on this. I heard the album she did with Herbert and don't remember being too thrilled over it. Dan Le Sac vs. Scrobbius Pup - Thou Shalt Always Kill

Okay, I know there was a thread on this that was started sometime in the first half of the year. I checked it a few times and tried to figure out what everyone was talking about in it. Sounded like some kind of mashup project or Canadian metal band or something and I just couldn't get past the artist or the title so I just gave up. Maybe there was a Youtube posted, but I was always listening to something else that I didn't want to bother pausing to play through it. This song... I really didn't want it to end, it could have gone on for another 6 minutes and not gotten old at all.

Coming off these two songs and into "Grace Kelly"... painful.

The Hives – Tick Tick Boom

US Chart Position
: #36 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #41

digitalspy Review: "After they lent their riffing skills to the Timbaland album and hooked up with the Neptunes, it was tempting to imagine that The Hives were about to undergo a ghetto fabulous makeover. Would the Swedes swap their sharply-tailored suits for oversized Sean John T-shirts? Would Howlin’ Pete Almqvist start to rap? Would Gwen Stefani sing the hook on one of the lesser album tracks? Honest to goodness, our minds ran amok.

But 'Tick Tick Boom', the first single from the Swedes' forthcoming Black and White Album, showcases a slight sonic modification rather than a radical musical reinvention. There are some subtle electro blips during the middle 8, and producer Dennis Herring really goes to town with an exploding bomb sound effect (Tick... Tick... Booooom! Geddit?), but the main ingredients are classic Hives: a frenetic garage-rock beat, buzz-saw riffs and Howlin' Pete Almqvist's inimitable wail. The whole effect is scuzzier than a snack from a Hackney kebab shop, but just as tasty." 4/5

Aly & AJ – Potential Breakup Song

US Chart Position
: #17

UK Chart Position: #22

digitalspy Review: "From Hilary Duff to The Cheetah Girls to anything bearing the High School Musical imprint, pop music made by Disney Channel stars tends to be as safe, sexless and winsomely wholesome as a weekend away with the Sea Cadets. At first glance, Aly & AJ – a pair of West Coast blondes with come hither eyes and don't-come-near-me-my-daddy's-a-Christian! moral codes – seem to be no exception.

But, by Disney Channel standards at least, 'Potential Breakup Song' is fairly adventurous, riding its scuzzy bassline and tango-inflected rhythm track to a chipper, synth-fuelled chorus. Hell, the cutesy twosome even manage to pop a knowing twist into their otherwise banal lyrics: "This is the potential breakup song - our album needs just one", indeed! They might come on like Gwen Stefani's slightly irritating younger sisters, but, for introducing the joys of electropop (and glam-rock guitar solos, no less) to the nation's tweenagers, Aly & AJ deserve to be cut a little slack." 3/5

M. Ward – To Go Home - EP

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

paperthinwalls Review: "The stuff that most folks'll cite as Portland troubadour M. Ward's greatest strengths—the rustic back-porch moods and old-fashioned country-folk acoustic strumming in his best songs, the unadorned and gentle crags in his breathy vocal delivery—aren't so much what he's focusing on in "To Go Home."

The track roars in with galloping toms and snare smashes, Ward's (justifiably highly lauded) guitar playing serving more as a texture than a touchstone, pounding piano chords and fill-busy beats swirling up front. Ward keeps his folky vocal honesty, sure enough, and it's heaped here with a similar kind of cathedral reverb as its excellent predecessors on Post-War.

But the mood, largely, is like a twee-on-fire dance of sweet pop ideas rocked up and spaced out, Ward straining his whisper to the tippy-toe edge of a break in the early verses and pre-choruses while a family of female voices sweeten and thicken, then howling like he's on the precipice of a canyon through the last chorus.

The approach—maybe something like power-pop dosed with psych-rock, or '60s pop sandpapered by some grit-edged folk—feels like a story Ward hasn't told you much before, and that's part of its strength. Even if the kind of atmospheric/bucolic sentiments he dealt up so effectively on, say, Transfiguration Of Vincent, haven't gotten old yet, it's a consistent thrill when someone shows off a multi-lingual fluency you hadn't realized was so gracefully practiced."

Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape (feat. Akon)

US Chart Position
: #2

UK Chart Position: #2

top40.about.com Review: "Gwen Stefani surprised many in the music industry when her first solo album Love, Angel, Music, Baby became a worldwide smash led by the combination of lowbrow culture and high production values that made "Hollaback Girl" one of the bigget hits of the year. Stefani seemed to master her wide-ranging pop music influences rearranging the various parts to put together a sound and image distinctly her own. The entire concept created a dizzying and invigorating ride for fans and critics alike.

"Wind It Up," the first single from Gwen Stefani's second solo album, seemed to want to kick the party off with another big production in the mode of "Hollaback Girl," but, unfortunately, everything about "Wind It Up" seems a bit stale and lacks resonance over multiple times of hearing the song. Following the failure of "Wind It Up" to reach the upper reaches of the pop singles chart, the album's title song "The Sweet Escape" was rushed out to radio featuring backing vocal contributions from the hotter-than-hot master collaborator Akon. The new song is breezy and light which goes far to explain pop radio's eagerness to embrace it.

"The Sweet Escape" seems to want to be the "Cool" of this album. Unfortunately, the new song is lacking in the emotional impact that made "Cool" memorable. "The Sweet Escape" is a fun, easy 4 minutes, but it looks like we will have to wait until at least the 3rd single, if not a later album, for the next smash hit from Gwen Stefani.

Pros

* Light, breezy pop radio fare
* Welcome retreat from over-produced production numbers

Cons

* Eminently forgettable

Description

* Bouncy retro-pop beat
* Pleasant, but barely noticeable, backing vocals from Akon
* Midwinter sounds of summer"

Simian Mobile Disco – I Believe

US Chart Position

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pop Justice Review: "Having been around years, Simian Mobile Disco finally got around to releasing A Proper Album last month. Somewhat incredibly this is single number four to be lifted from 'Attack Decay Sustain Release'.

'I Believe' is a bleepy trance-ballad you can easily imagine being sung by Robyn or someone similarly female and Scandinavian – but is in fact sung by a man. An upbeat re-jigging injects some radio friendly fun into the single and wonders are achieved.

A welcome addition to this year's explosion of amazing male dance duos who have produced proper albums and then released some really good singles from them." 80%
