Feist - My Moon My Man / My Moon My Man (Boyz Noize Remix)

(2512 Points, 22 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: Seen as almost an afterthought in this post-"1234" world, the first single from The Reminder explores all of the sonic dimensions of Feist. Along with "Sea Lion Woman," it represents the sound that Feist has defined for herself live. As the song progress, more layers build up, until the song climaxes with a multi-tracked vocal repeating over the set of piano chords that have been churning throughout the song. Suddenly, everything else stops and we're just left with that piano. "1234" may have been the introduction of Feist to the mainstream, but "My Moon My Man" should be what lasts. –Paul

Jay-Z – Roc Boys (And The Winner Is…)

(2608 Points, 17 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #63 / #8 Rap Tracks

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: No, no Mr. Carter. Thank you. During the first verse of “Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)”, Jay-Z goes through a thank you list of the people and items that have contributed to his success as a dope dealer, but by the time that the hook comes around, you realize it’s you, the customer, who’s truly grateful. When was the last time that a Jigga single has been this ferocious? This pounding? This hungry? After the lackluster Kingdom Come, even the most ardent Jay-Z followers felt that the man had nothing else of substance to rhyme about, which is what makes the accomplishment of “Roc Boys” all the more amazing. God MC has finally delivered lyrical manna from the heavens for those starving, ardent followers. But beyond the shock of Jay-Z delivering a quality single once again, the song stands mightily on its own merits. On display is the swagger, the swift wordplay and street imagery that gained Jay-Z’s following in the first place (too many great lines to quote, so I’ll just let you mull on the subtle awesomeness of “Herion got less steps than Britney/That means it ain't stepped on, dig me?”). Add to that the celebratory production by The Runners, who shower the track with blazing, triumphant horns, and a toast is indeed in order. If returning to crime yields these kind of results, rehabilitation can suck it. – Midnight_Vulture

Those singles by Modest Mouse and The Shins...talk about going through the motions. Yikes.

Paves is right, Pig Destroyer wins the Phantom Limb duel.

Animal Collective's "Peacebone" is surprisingly contagious. I usually find them unbearable.

But "Missed the Boat" isn't a traditional Modest Mouse song, so how is it going through motions?

The Ark – Absolutely No Decorum

(2652 Points, 11 Votes, Two #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says:Some say the Swedes gets all the "good stuff." I am not one of those assholes. But I do believe they do get some really awesome things, like the Swedish Chef, Ikea, and those delicious and dainty little meatballs. But none of those come even remotely close to my favorite single of 2007, the Ark's "Absolutely No Decorum."

This song packs pretty much everything I love about music in to one nice, tidy three minute and forty-six second package. It has a bombastic introduction (with a choir and wailing guitar), a bouncy set of verses, and a chorus that can best be described as "epic."

It's really a shame that the Ark are basically hated terrorists over here in the U.S. of A, because if this song garnered any airplay here in the States, it would undoubtedly be beloved by mothers, daughters, sisters and wives, alike. It's just that universally accepted as being "great."

So in conclusion,

I see what you're saying, but I feel like this song and "florida" are great examples of the new additions to the band on this album (ie Marr and Mercer) actually tweaking and playing with MM's sound. As a diehard fan, I was pretty pleasantly surprised by just how much of a departure parts of the album were, especially the harmonizing on "Missed the Boat" and such.

Just my two cents.

Kanye West – Can’t Tell Me Nothing / Can’t Tell Me Nothing (Remix feat. Young Jeezy)

(2668 Points, 19 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #41 / #8 Rap Tracks

UK Chart Position: #107

SOMB Says: NAME-BRAND EGOMANIAC KANYE VS. MAMA'S BOY I LOVE GOD KANYE

It's the battle of the ages. Or at the very least, of the Kanye's. We have in the red corner the one, the only, the LOUIS VUITTON DON. He's primping and preening and lookin' damn good. Chock-full of jewels and name-brands, the DON ain't about to back down. A formidable opponent to be sure.

His opponent in the blue corner is the mild, the meek, the MAMA'S BOY KANYE. He loves his mom and his God and probably his green peas as well. And while he's got a whole lot of conviction backing up each hit, he's certainly the underdog tonight.

But as they say, anything can happen in the ring. Especially when DJ Toomp and his army of stormy synths are officiating. And...

*DING* -DING- *DING*

...the fight is on! MAMA'S BOY KANYE rushes in with a few early punches. He uses the only attacks he knows. "Remember mom?" -- "Remember God?" -- "Remember?" But the DON don't care. He laughs, "Uh, uh, you can't tell me nothing" and BAM knocks the little MAMA'S BOY straight in the face. "Who needs God when you can buy your way to heaven?" he chides.

But the lil' MAMA'S BOY ain't no quitter. He goes in for a few more jabs. Looking to topple the self-assured DON. And suprisingly he gets a few good hits in. The DON is beginning to look a bit wobbily, or at the very least a bit guilty. He knows he's stronger, but can he really destroy this lil' boy in front of him? I mean, it's where he came from. And he can't forget that. Can he?

Well sure he can, and he socks the MAMA'S BOY right back - POW. But, he seems uncertain. Maybe he did turn his back on his past. "NAHHH" he smirks and goes for the knock-out.

"La, la, la, la / Wait 'til I get my money right"

But his punch misses the mark. And little Kanye was waiting.

"La la la la / Then you can't tell me nothing"

BOOM - the LIL' MAMA'S BOY knocked the DON straight in the jaw. And the DON goes down!

"right?" – stphone

Patrick Wolf – The Magic Position

(2669 Points, 20 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: March 23rd was an eventful day. It was a Friday, and one longtime friend had a going away party -- he moved to San Francisco at the end of the weekend. Prior to the party I had dinner and drinks with another close friend and we continued to grow attached to one another, I would spend the next 7 months of the year developing stronger feelings for her. Still later I spent a meaningful half-hour exploring iPod catalogs with a tall, skinny, potty-mouthed & opinionated brunette while the bar life swirled unknowingly around us (that crush lasted for a good 2 weeks.) Another two of my closest friends shocked even me by leaving together, sharing a cab home and forever removing the sexual tension that existed between them. It is safe to assume I had consumed several beers at this point. At the urging of a handful of sombies (via text messages) I showed up drunk to Smartbar and promptly abandoned the dark haired vixen I arrived with (this was not my plan -- perhaps she abandoned me). One of Hewletts Daughter’s friends, upon being told I was kmac, praised my apparent comedic skills (ego +4 pts). More beers would follow. Later, sitting with another group in the booth next to the photo machine, I had a liquor-induced conversation that touched on quite a few subjects I had absolutely no business openly discussing with others. I would deal with this down the road. I left the club and got onto the red line. When I woke up I discovered I was not in my bed and had instead arrived at the north end of the line, the opposite direction of where I live. Shitballs. The sun came up before I finally arrived home at 5:45am.
I have little recollection of most of what I’ve just described. Somewhere and at some point that night I first heard Patrick Wolf’s “The Magic Position.” When I woke up that day at 2:30pm in the afternoon it haunted my memory and was all I could remember. By Tuesday I was able to piece together the missing pieces of the evening. It may have been the alcohol, it may have been my emotional state, it my have been Derek’s friend slipping me some roofies. I, however, like to think that a perfectly crafted pop song has the power to cloud reality and blur truth. Such is the strength of “The Magic Position”. – kmac

Yeasayer – 2080 / Sunrise

(2690 Points, 16 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: In a year that has seen Arcade Fire run with the living-in-post-apocalyptic-time themes found in the middle period Talking Heads in for the modern age, Brooklyn’s Yeasayer have tapped into a similar vein in ‘2080’. The song itself sounds almost drunk, enters like an Animal Collective song with pounding heartbeat drums. “It’s a new year” rising up like the sun over the Kalahari revealing a tribe of herdsmen dancing and chanting along to instruments older then fears of what effects MMGW would have wrought by 2080 or where we should look for an enemy in the post Berlin War ‘end of history’ world. Instead it seeks some kind of solace in retreating back to more simplistic times and we are joined by gospel chanting then chanting children as we fully regress. While we are there on the flipside “Sunrise” we continue the back to basics approach and have a million years taken out of our heads and get in the sunrise. While all around us we hear wooing, clapping, clicking banging and clattering. I think I might sit out 2008 and stay here with Yeasayer. – MitchellStirling

R. Kelly – I’m A Flirt (Remix feat. T-Pain & T.I.)

(2710 Points, 12 Votes, One #1 Vote)

US Chart Position
: #12 /#1 Rap Tracks

UK Chart Position: #18

SOMB Says: As the most recent in a long line of songs about R. Kelly stealing your girl, "I'm A Flirt" shines for a variety of reasons. First, you have the expected nonsensical one-liners flowing from Kels, like any uptempo sex jam should have. He is rather frank with the fact that if you are at the club and you go to the bathroom, he will steal and statutory rape your lady friend. He doesn't care that she's over 18. Why can/will he do this? Because he's black, handsome , sings, plus he's rich and most importantly, a flirt. Next T.I. follows and just like in last year's "My Love," he acts as the voice of reason. Well, sort of. At least compared to R. Kelly, he's trying to look out for you. Finally, T-Pain (did you ever expect to hear him on a hip-hop/R&B track this year?) shows up and T-Pains around a little bit. By combing three of the, if not best, at least most ubiquitous urban hit-makers of the last few years, you're left with a ridiculous jam that somehow still is the most logical thing found on Double Up.– Paul
