SOMB Says: You wouldn't think you're about to hear one of the lushest pop songs of the year by the way she strolls in murmuring a few integers, but then it's not like Feist was gonna shout to make sure you're paying attention. Instead, she glides through with the ease and cool of the first day of spring. Strings soar and horns flourish and Feist skips along carefree as a socialite at the bottom of her first cosmo, staying aloof but still having a ball.

Battles - Atlas(6384 Points, 30 Votes, Two #1 Votes)US Chart Position: n/a
UK Chart Position: n/a
SOMB Says: Everything is industrial. Every instrument is tweaked and altered until it sounds like anything but. Even the vocals are alien, intercepted transmissions from ancient foreign broadcasts. Most of all, it is machine. At the 4-minute mark the soft, wrenching groans of some monstrous mechanical beast enters.
The song chugs like a coal black train. It has pistons of quick & infallible metals. It is pure diesel and hydraulics.
And the drums. My god, how the drums persist.

Kanye West - Stronger(6919 Points, 30 Votes, Two #1 Votes)US Chart Position: #1
UK Chart Position: #1
SOMB Says: I don't know if any song was more explosive this year and oddly foreshadowing.... the lyrics "I Need You Right Now" connotes the trouble he's experiencing in his life. In a world where hip hop artists rely on guest stars left and right, Kanye handles this song alone....well, with a little help from Daft Punk. I only wish i could've been there in Europe when he shouted this song to the crowd after his mother's death and the crowd was giving him love right back.

No. It's a choice of time. I can only be committed to so much music, only got so much time. So I invest my time into what I think is dearest to me and end up missing some great stuff along the way. I listen to a LOT of music - like everyone here - but I miss a TON of it, even the obvious stuff. No posturing, no pretention, no elitism, I just don't find myself listening to the radio very often cause the only radio I have is in my car and I always have something new on my ipod I want to listen to.

UGK International Players Anthem (I Choose You) (feat. OutKast)(7506 Points, 26 Votes, Five #1 Votes)US Chart Position: #70 / #12 R&B and Hip-Hop Songs
UK Chart Position: #10
SOMB Says: How come Kanye's always being praised for rapping about his emotions meanwhile UGK have quietly released the most heart warming song of the year? Andre 3000 is a young man deciding to grow up and settle down with the woman he loves, all the while his friends try to talk him out of it. Clichι riddled? Perhaps, but it's certainly not something explored in rap too often. The Three 6 Mafia-produced track gives 'dre over a minute to set up the story before the classic beat drops and everyone gets their turn to offer up their opinions. Marriage doesn't come without its warning, "ask ask Paul McCartney, the lawyers gettin' sloppy." But in the end Andre's buddy's heed his advice and choose someone themselves as Bun B proposes, "I'll show you shit you've never seen. The 7 wonders of the world, and I can make you the 8th if you wanna be my girl."
