I'm THRILLED that UGK placed so high. Good job SOMB.

I, on the other hand, am not so gracious. Was really hoping for a top 5 showing. But you're right. A UGK single in the top 10 is momentous.

Definitely. #7 isn't too bad at all.

Song rules but I neverever heard it on the radio and I think I saw the video once, is this a failing on my part or that of urban radio?
pigfuck
Either the song I blurbed finished a lot higher than I expected to, or I missed it. Hm.

Radio's fault probably. This song and record just did not get the commercial push it deserved.
Pavement Ist Rad
There's no obvious hook besides the one in the background, though, is there? Killer production, awesome verses, but no catchy chorus or anything like that.

Just my speculation...
Twilight
It was pretty big on rap radio here, and the video was constantly on MTV2 and 106 & Park. It wasn't really a crossover track though.
Chronodiggity
Killer video too

Yeah, I love that video. (LOL @ T-Pain)

God, I must have listened to that song about four straight times the first time I heard it.

Justice – D.A.N.C.E. / D.A.N.C.E. (Paste Black Remix) / D.A.N.C.E. (Les Rythmes Digitales Remix) / D.A.N.C.E. (Benny Blanco mix feat. Mos Def and Spank Rock)

(7656 Points, 35 Votes, Two #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #10 Hot Dance Play

UK Chart Position: #48

SOMB Says: I don’t dance. I have never been to a dance club. I also avoid parties where people wear white belts. So I do not think that I have heard “D.A.N.C.E.,” in the proper context. Oh well. The best thing I can say about this song is that it makes me smile, and sets my toes a-tapping. Maybe it is the “fuck-me” guitar line, or the luscious swelling strings that give this song far more staying power than I could have anticipated. As gimmicky as this song might be, there is something that happens when the keyboards and strings are swirling through the air and the child-like vocals yearn, “The way you move is a mystery.” “D.A.N.C.E.” somehow evolves from a killer dance track into something far more emotionally affecting; it’s a glorious moment in a stunning single. – The Luscious Phil

?!?!

And I liked "Stronger"
Pavement Ist Rad
Pimp C...?

I don't know, I had been planning to check out the album for a good month or so, but it was his death that made me finally cave in. And I ended up enjoying it immensely.

So quality, yeah. But my top ten vote might not have been if not for that, which makes me feel like an asshole, but hey, amazing song.

Is there any chance that "Umbrella" will end up on top or does LCD Soundsystem have this in the bag? On most of the lists I can recall (mine included) "Umbrella" was #2

It's a really good song. I mean, I got into UGK kinda late too, but that's some good stuff right there.

No chance. "All My Friends" was #1 on, like, 7 lists. At least. maybe 5 or 6. I didnt' really count.
The Luscious Phil
wow, two LCD songs in the top five? Didn't we have another list where one artist pulled this trick (maybe it was all time singles and New Order).

94-2004 albums: three Radiohead and two Wilco albums in top 5, right?

Spoon – The Underdog

(7775 Points, 33 Votes, One #1 Vote)

US Chart Position
: #26 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: Sure, "The Underdog" might be about Britt Daniel's well-known struggles with the record industry - Underdog/Messenger:Spoon::Pipe-and-Slippers-Sporting-Motherfucker:M. Lafitte - but it gets at something greater: middle-age malaise and the sedentary life. Ever since Bob Motherfucking Dylan asked, "How does it feel?," Rock 'n Roll has (ostensibly) been about dynamics and emotion – keeping it (and them) moving and keeping 'em guessing. When it fails to do this, it pretty much fails to be anything but mediocre.

"When you don't feel it it shows they tear out your soul
And when you believe they call it rock and roll"
- "The Beast and Dragon, Adored"

So, then, here we go: "The Underdog" is that perfect collision of feeling and forward movement, and the meta-anxiety that ensues when you stop to think about both. Daniel sings, "I wanna forget how conviction fits / but can I get out from under it? / Can I gut it out of me?" Here we get, yeah, an admonition against the malaise that sets in - in both audience and industry: that "you" of the pipe-and-slippers set is awfully ambiguous, especially when coupled with the pointed lyrics of "The Beast and Dragon, Adored" - when a band's LP4, 5 or 6 rolls around, but also an awesome performance contra that malaise. Yeah, it's Spoon all over, but those horn flourishes and oddly syncopated handclaps are so clearly something else. This isn't a band reinventing itself by any estimation, but it certainly is a (middle-aged) group refusing to go gentle into that good night, refusing to puff its pipe and slip on a pair of fucking slippers. – Michael K.

LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great

(10018 Points, 39 Votes, Six #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: It began as a piece of music from 45:33 that wouldn't leave my head and it ended up being one-half of one of the greatest back-to-back punches in recent memory. The David Ortiz to "All My Friends"' Manny Ramirez revealed that James Murphy wasn't just some hipster in his thirties with an awesome record collection as he had been cast. No, he was an adult who has loved & lost like anyone else. We would have been fine if he had just given us something to dance to. We had no idea he'd also give us poignant songs to sigh reflectively to. – UselessRocker

Aly & AJ – Potential Breakup Song

US Chart Position
: #17

UK Chart Position: #22

digitalspy Review: "From Hilary Duff to The Cheetah Girls to anything bearing the High School Musical imprint, pop music made by Disney Channel stars tends to be as safe, sexless and winsomely wholesome as a weekend away with the Sea Cadets. At first glance, Aly & AJ – a pair of West Coast blondes with come hither eyes and don't-come-near-me-my-daddy's-a-Christian! moral codes – seem to be no exception.

But, by Disney Channel standards at least, 'Potential Breakup Song' is fairly adventurous, riding its scuzzy bassline and tango-inflected rhythm track to a chipper, synth-fuelled chorus. Hell, the cutesy twosome even manage to pop a knowing twist into their otherwise banal lyrics: "This is the potential breakup song - our album needs just one", indeed! They might come on like Gwen Stefani's slightly irritating younger sisters, but, for introducing the joys of electropop (and glam-rock guitar solos, no less) to the nation's tweenagers, Aly & AJ deserve to be cut a little slack." 3/5

I don't really get the "All My friends" love, but I did vote for "Someone Great"... awesome song. Though I think "Hold On" by Holy Ghost! is the best DFA single this year and was totally slept on by you guys...
The Luscious Phil
Is there any chance Paper Planes takes the #2 spot? (i mean that would be the only surprise left on this awesome little countdown.)
forgo
i thought 'all my friends' was a little derivative and boring given the entire album, but when it hit me it hit me hard. that is one amazing fucking song. same with the whole album. god damn.

Me too, I cry everytime I hear it though.

Totally didn't expect Spoon to be so high (but then, I didn't know it was a single)
Midnite_Vulture
I'd like to think "Paper Planes" has the strongest shot at playing spoiler. This is a year where an upset like that is remotely possible. Might not be as close in 2005 with Franz and Gorillaz, but the results should be interesting.
Pavement Ist Rad
So do I actually need to listen to this LCD album or what.
Chronodiggity
Yeah, how close the votes are should be interesting. I like Paper Planes WAY WAY WAY more than Umbrella, so it would be a nice surprise.
Saskadelphia
Sorry to get all Emperor's New Clothes on you guys, but why on earth is that UGK thing as great as so many of you purport it to be? Not to be snarky, I genuinely want to know.

Bun B appears twice in our Top Ten. smile.gif

I need to listen to the LCD album again, rather than writing it off as three great singles.
