Sorry to get all Emperor's New Clothes on you guys, but why on earth is that UGK thing as great as so many of you purport it to be? Not to be snarky, I genuinely want to know.

The gospel hook.

Oh you.

Yep, that's me. Mr. Oh So Edgy Too Cool For Massively Loved Indie Rock Albums Guy, somehow managing to ignore everything about new music from the LCD Soundsystem during the year 2007, save the re-release of 45:33. I might cave in some time during the next few days, who knows.

You and your ilk will one day FALL.

I suspect it'll have a similarly crushing effect on the albums poll as well.

The LCD album? I sure hope so.

It's 0415, I'm waiting not sure I can stay up unless MIA and LCD are one and two

Paul is prolonging the agony in typical countdown fashion.
Saskadelphia
So I just heard "The Underdog" for the first time, and although it's pleasant enough, wow, it's nowhere close to being as great as the rest of the top five.

I dunno if I am ever gonna get Spoon
Mr Tangerine Man
just heard this ugk song, very good but it's driving me crazy trying to remember what other song has used that sample, if anyone can tell me it would be greatly appreciated

also the lcd songs are well deserving of the high placement imo

Well, let's start with the production. Just the right amount of tension during Andre's verse until it explodes. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but soft/loud dynamics always tend to get me excited. The Willie Hutch song that it samples is already great source material, but the bounce added to that song is incredibly infectious.

And then, we get to the actual rapping. You have two of the greatest groups in hip hop history (not just in the South, but period) together on a track while they're still relevant and neither one of them backs down. Place either one of those verses on another song, it would easily still the show. It just so happens that Andre 3000 drops probably the verse of the year. Everything just falls into place with this song. It's what most mainstream hip hop doesn't aspire to be.

While I wouldn't agree with the "nowhere close" part, I do mostly agree with you. Hell, I ranked "The Underdog" #10, and I blurbed it. It's a great song, though.

MV OTM.

You're right, that's the part that grabbed me the most.

Nice explanation, MV, thanks for that. smile.gif

It's really a reflection of how great Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was, and it's the only single, I think.

I think it's justified. Great great great song.
Paul
Sorry these last ones are taking so long. The mp3s are taking a while.
Chronodiggity
Yeah, the All My Friends EP is pretty big LOL.

I knew I should've taken a shower after Someone Great...
Mitchell
That spoon song barely deserved a blurb. I like the album but there are what, 4 superior songs at least?
Pavement Ist Rad
"The Underdog" is good, eh.

Now, if "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb" had been the lone single from the LP...

EDIT: Mitchell OTM, yes.

I feel like I lost this year. 30 out of my top 50 weren't in the top 100. sad.gif
Midnite_Vulture
I've managed to avoid "The Underdog" this long. I'll probably listen to it tonight or tomorrow. The only reason I downloaded it is because I listend to "I Turn My Camera On" when it cracked our singles poll and I ended up really liking it. Plus, I see "The Underdog" mentioned every other time I see the word spoon on this board.
Chronodiggity
23 of my top 50 didn't place, lulz

I Turn My Camera On rules and Britt Daniel is our second-handsomest indie rocker but like everything else about Spoon...ehhhhh

I can't add em up, since I didn't send in a list, but besides LCD, Kanye and Modest Mouse, I haven't heard pretty much most of the things ranking.

Now That It’s Raining More Than Ever

#3.

Rihanna – Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z) / Umbrella (Vndlsm Remix) / Umbrella (Remix feat. Lil Mama)

(10376 Points, 40 Votes, One #1 Vote)

US Chart Position
: #1

UK Chart Position: #1

SOMB Says: Okay, so everyone knows Rihanna doesn't have the best singing voice, but she works what she's got. Through "Umbrella," her voice cracks and twangs as she emotes. And of course there's the now-iconic extra syllable she puts into the title word. However, the song is probably more about the amazing songwriting and production. Considering Christopher Stewart's lack of quality output in the past and The Dream's lack of, well, anything, for them to create such a near-perfect (marred only by Jigga's throwaway verse) slice of pop is shocking. Massive drums are backed by what is possibly the best use of synth distorted guitar ever. And notice I say the drums are backed by the synth, as the drums are front and fucking center, even and times trumping Rihanna's voice. The songwriters have created a powerful, moving song about desperation and consolation which is only cheapened by the let's-put-Rihanna-in-an-S-&-M-outfit video. Tip: if you're going to distract me with a sexily-dressed Rihanna, put it on a crappier song, like that Ne-Yo duet. – scarymuppet

Where Are Your Friends Tonight?

#1.

LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends / Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends / John Cale – All My Friends / No Love Lost / All My Friends (Harvey Mix) / Freak Out/Starry Eyes

(15813 Points, 52 Votes, Seven #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #41

SOMB Says: It's not a connection that immediately comes to mind, but I kind of see LCD Soundsystem as a modern, indie rock KISS. Not in terms of anything musical, of course, but just in that sense of empowerment--any KISS fan will tell you that the story wasn't just the music, it wasn't even just the live experience, it was the sense of community behind everything they did, a community that proved that no matter who you were listening to them, you weren't alone. James Murphy does the same thing in "All My Freinds," completley eschewing the personal in favor of the movement, the scene, the generation--"I" is pronounced with pronouns like "we" and the plural "you," in sweeping statements that imply shared experience for all listening. And in all likelihood, he's right--showing your age, trying to get with the plan, wondering where your friends are tonight--who would be listening to LCD Soundsystem that couldn't relate to all this? Of course, having the best dance-rock rave-up production of the year as a backing track doesn't hurt, nor does the fact that the single comes with two artists arguably doing superior cover versions, and one of the most "how the hell did they leave this off the album?" b-sides in ages. It's 2007, and the LCD Army is thousands strong and growing. –The Good Dr Bill

Artist's Previous Rankings on Our Singles Lists: "Yeah" (#14 of 2004), "Disco Infiltrator" (#85 of 2005), "Tribulations" / Tiga Remix (#10 of 2005), "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" / Soulwax Remix (#8 of 2005)

I'm going to listen "All My Friends" for the first time ever. For Bill, if anybody.

Stellar top three. Well done, Paul!

About 15 of my top 50 picks made the final 100. Not bad.

halfway through my first time of "umbrella" i switched to rivers cuomo, which was right underneath it huh.gif

Well done, Paul. It is definitely appreciated.

Great list, somebody gonna post a full recap so I can count how many of my votes got in? Off the top I'm only upset about "Boy With a Coin" not getting in, it's probably the catchiest most single-like song that Iron & Wine will ever manage.
