Now That Its Raining More Than Ever

Rihanna Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z) / Umbrella (Vndlsm Remix) / Umbrella (Remix feat. Lil Mama)(10376 Points, 40 Votes, One #1 Vote)US Chart Position: #1
UK Chart Position: #1
SOMB Says: Okay, so everyone knows Rihanna doesn't have the best singing voice, but she works what she's got. Through "Umbrella," her voice cracks and twangs as she emotes. And of course there's the now-iconic extra syllable she puts into the title word. However, the song is probably more about the amazing songwriting and production. Considering Christopher Stewart's lack of quality output in the past and The Dream's lack of, well, anything, for them to create such a near-perfect (marred only by Jigga's throwaway verse) slice of pop is shocking. Massive drums are backed by what is possibly the best use of synth distorted guitar ever. And notice I say the drums are backed by the synth, as the drums are front and fucking center, even and times trumping Rihanna's voice. The songwriters have created a powerful, moving song about desperation and consolation which is only cheapened by the let's-put-Rihanna-in-an-S-&-M-outfit video. Tip: if you're going to distract me with a sexily-dressed Rihanna, put it on a crappier song, like that Ne-Yo duet.

LCD Soundsystem All My Friends / Franz Ferdinand All My Friends / John Cale All My Friends / No Love Lost / All My Friends (Harvey Mix) / Freak Out/Starry Eyes(15813 Points, 52 Votes, Seven #1 Votes)US Chart Position: n/a
UK Chart Position: #41
SOMB Says: It's not a connection that immediately comes to mind, but I kind of see LCD Soundsystem as a modern, indie rock KISS. Not in terms of anything musical, of course, but just in that sense of empowerment--any KISS fan will tell you that the story wasn't just the music, it wasn't even just the live experience, it was the sense of community behind everything they did, a community that proved that no matter who you were listening to them, you weren't alone. James Murphy does the same thing in "All My Freinds," completley eschewing the personal in favor of the movement, the scene, the generation--"I" is pronounced with pronouns like "we" and the plural "you," in sweeping statements that imply shared experience for all listening. And in all likelihood, he's right--showing your age, trying to get with the plan, wondering where your friends are tonight--who would be listening to LCD Soundsystem that couldn't relate to all this? Of course, having the best dance-rock rave-up production of the year as a backing track doesn't hurt, nor does the fact that the single comes with two artists arguably doing superior cover versions, and one of the most "how the hell did they leave this off the album?" b-sides in ages. It's 2007, and the LCD Army is thousands strong and growing.
