Shit, this is a pretty cool fucking song to have as our Number One Single of 2007.

James Murphy is a good man.

I was about to say maybe if you count Deerhunter guy's chest hole as a person

Mr. Bird, Mr. Good and I are going to have to respectfully disagree with you.

Thank you, Paul.

Thanx Paul

I now have another SOMB Playlist for my IPOD.

Paul is the ultimate man!

How did Matt Good pop up on this page?
Paul
Eventually I'll put up a list of the top 500 or so. I just can't stand to look at a spreadsheet any more tonight.

Albums start tomorrow. Maybe not until night, though. Top 40 for sure on Sunday.

Umbrella losing? I have been foiled in my predictions again, to my delight.

Exellent, Paulito.
Mantana
Thanks for upping all those Paul. Let us know if you ever need anything. And I mean anything.

halfway through my first time of "umbrella" i switched to rivers cuomo, which was right underneath it huh.gif
does that make me rockist?

Yes.

There's a reason they called that album Alone. Because they should have left those songs alone.

QUOTE(AsherFord @ Dec 21 2007, 09:48 PM)
Off the top I'm only upset about "Boy With a Coin" not getting in, it's probably the catchiest most single-like song that Iron & Wine will ever manage.

It just missed at #178.

Hi
Slackmo
If Kanye ever builds a track around a New Order sample, we can just skip having a poll, right?
typical pickle conflicts
Is that Rivers Cuomo thing good for real? I don't even know when the stuff on it is from, I just thought to myself I'm 20+, that guy let me down for the last time like five years ago
Nick
Good job Paul.
scarymuppet
Boo, no Muscles. Not much of a hope for him on the albums list either. Surprised "Underdog" was so high.

Nice job, Paul. Pretty great results and an entertaining countdown. Looking forward to the albums.

I was really kind of hoping AMF wasn't going to be #1, just because I didn't want my shitty blurb do adorn it. Oh well.

Cool list. That UGK song is overrated. Fucking awesome job by Paul.

Only 3 tracks missed the list from my Top Ten

it's kind of shocking that you could go this long without hearing it ohmy.gif

i didn't hear it until the other day when someone posted it for me on SOMB. and i definitely don't go out of my way at all to avoid pop culture, but i also don't watch TV more than maybe 3-4 hours a week tops (of which a chunk of that is the news), and when i do it' almost all Tivo'd.

Minneapolis has really good radio so if i do ever listen to radio (maybe an hour a week?) it's 89.3 The Current, which is fairly diverse but definitely no top 40 stuff. oh, and i avoid the mall like the plague laugh.gif . so like i asked earlier in the thread, i guess if i actively checked out the Billboard charts and downloaded those songs i'd hear them, otherwise there's just not much chance for stuff like that to ever enter into my ears unless someone tells me i need to hear something.

definitely not a conscious effort or elitism, etc. for me either, just no real chance for exposure.

i also have no clue who/what UGK is other than the acronym reminds me of Ugly Kid Joe.
The Good Dr Bill
I voted for "Big Casino," can't say I had much expectation of it making it though.

I should probably have pimped the Villalobos "Cell Phone's Dead" or something.
Mad Clown
Great list. Thank you so much for picking up GDB's rei(g)ns, Paul.

However...

Jens Lekman appears as many times on this list as T-Pain.

huh.gif

SOMB astounds as always. I know when I look back on 2007's singles 10 years from now, I'll be all like "oh yeah, that was totally the year of JENS".

Absolutely essential.

Just because I love Make Believe doesn't mean that you shouldn't believe me on this one.

This was an excellent list. I was downloading the beginning as it went along, and then stepped out for a couple of hours and came back to see who came up on top. It was fun keeping up.

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING PAUL!!!!

its a great looking list like this that makes me want to pay attention to singles for next year so i can vote here
Tracy Jacks
Thanks Paul! Great job on this list and the others!
Justine
I downloaded 70 songs, might have left out a couple that I should of downloaded, but also a couple that I listened to and deleted right away, lol.

Thanks Paul!

sort of bittersweet that gdb did the last blurb. aww.

I liked that too. And being that there was a slew of folks who put "AMF" at #1 - and were also blurbing - you gotta believe that was intentional in some way. Amirite, Paul?

so I got to hear the Yeahyeahyeahs EP thing, Fluorecent Gray, The Black Kids and a few others I had some interest in and they were all pretty good. Biggest "had no idea" has to be Beautiful Life - Gui Borrato. I am really digging this track alot, and I'm sure it's gonna be on repeat alot for me.

Great top 3, All my friends still stands as one of the best narritives in recent history. I mainly put the album on my top 30 or so of the year because of that amazing song and the song they cop from the 45:33.
Elemeno P.T.
Thanks, Paul.
That blurb was all heart GDB. Well done.

I am actually 100% serious. With his unique vocoder-heavy style, and his willingness to bust out a sweet verse on almost any song in many different genres, Jens Lekman was quite ubiquitous this year. He often had 3 if not 4 songs in the iTunes Top 20, and at one point was so dominant on the charts that he held three slots in the Billboard top 10. Jens Lekman is unquestionably the preeminent singles artist of 2007.

P.S. Why so hostile? Let's talk it out friend. When word of my scathing review hits the Associated Press, I'm sure your career as CEO of Lekman Entertainment Group is going to suffer from all that spiteful vitriol I was throwing out. However, I promise you can send me the numbers on your losses and I will hook you up with the mad dollaz. Don't you worry, I've got you covered. We're good like that.
Mitchell
I've probably thought about bathroom tiles more than T-Pain this year
James D
Thats a nice thing to wake up to anyway. Interesting list. All My Friends is probably in my top 5 favourite songs that was in that top 100, so its all good. I'd imagine SoS is going to be in contention for the #1 album, thats for sure.
Sickpup
those LCD songs are weak.

"Umbrella" pretty much blows away every other single in the SOMB top ten -- and i say that as someone who doesn't even enjoy hip hop or R&B.
Skippy
Thanks Paul. I look forward to this every year. So, glad it's continuing.

Hey, can we commission someone to make an "album cover" for this? My MP3 player is sad that it doesn't have cover art.

Sickpup OTM.

Great list, great job Paul.

Gosh I love the singles list, mainly because I was away for all night, but come back in the morning to find I am five pages behind. If I were to do this with the albums list, I would probably have had to read through 15 pages (and only see 7 picks).
solace
i can't speak for others, but a good chunk of why i love those 2 LCD singles so much is their lyrics, which i know not everyone really gives a shit about. i can relate to both of them quite a bit, especially Someone Great.

i'm convinced people like those songs because murphy is a corpulent sadsack who seems reasonably intelligent. they're drawn to the artist.

his music is a total bore. didn't get it the last time, and certainly don't get it now. "all my friends" is all build, a giant cocktease of a song.

lyrics are worthless if they're not in service of a good song.
solace
well, again, i can't speak for others, but i love the music on both, particularly Someone Great. the music from that song comes from 45:33, which just happened to be my favorite part of that mix too.

Someone Great reminds me of Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out" a little bit (just similiar vibe, not all that similiar musically), which is one of my favorite songs ever.

the build on AMF has a lot better payoff live, i'll give you that, but i still love it on record too. and i think the EP also got a lot of votes because of the other tracks on it too honestly.

I actually don't understand what you're talking about in the first paragraph, but if I read it right, it's, "Inclusion in the iTunes Top 20 = quality." The thing that you may not realize is that Jens has a thread on this board with 20+ pages and a pretty large legion of die-hards (which would explain the hostility - sorry if I offended)... and I think Mitchell said it best in regards to T-Pain.

Anywho, I look forward to actually looking through this list... I was away for a few days and missed the whole damn countdown! I look forward to hearing some things I wanted to hear all year, but was unable to...

Oh snap, of course I voted for Kiss Kiss too. I should've done the Two Step Remix as well. That makes 10, after my edits and figuring it all out.

I voted for both the release WITH "Kiss Kiss" and THE BAND Kiss Kiss.

Now it's my turn to say, "Ugh."

And here it goes.

UGH, Battles. Why is that shit in our TOP TEN SINGLES LIST, of all places.

lol..that's by far the only song in the top 20 worth anything to me.

I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning with the year end SOMB countdown.
Outstanding job Paul.
And the blurbs from fellow SOMB's > Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, take yer pick. You guys so talented...

Hey, where's Girls In Their Summer Clothes?...ah!
Anyway, think next year I'll sit on putting in my vote and glean from the lists from those of you that really keep track of what's a single. Paper Planes woulda been right where it is on mine.

And Bros should be much higher than Animal Collective.

"We set controls for the heart of the sun/one of the ways we show our age"...love that line...goes out to Montana

Yeah, I don't get it. I listened again last night to see if either one would finally click. Nope. They're like the climax that never comes. They seem to be building to something awesome and then... just... don't.
