Ritter isn't going to make our top ten, no.

I don't know, man. It was on a lot of lists. And you're right about AC and Panda Bear. I would be surprised if Ritter wasn't in the top 15.

The Stars record was okay, but it did very, very little for me.

I'm imagining this is going to be a punch-out between LCD, AF, & Radiohead.... but I always like surprises.

Maybe throw Burial and Stars of the Lid in there too.

I see Josh Ritter in that list as well. But I think it's going to be:

1. LCD
2. Radiohead
3. Arcade Fire

1. AF
2. LCD
3. radiohead.

where will jens fall?
Pavement Ist Rad
Neon Bible will be lucky to go top five.

I've havn't heard Mark Sultan. Whats it like?

I'll let the man Paves whip up the hyperbole but I'll say this: rock and fucking roll. And by that, I mean the old-school fifties and sixties shit, recorded in a tin can lying out the back of some greasy diner while Sam Cooke's long-lost nephew sings lost chart-toppers in an abandoned shed.

haha. Nice. Should have been an official blurb on the countdown.

I put it in the fish thread if anyone wants to hear it.

It would be nice for me to see those two in the top ten, but I'm not sure about how comprehensive the votage was on those. However, most who placed them put them high on their list.

Maybe top 20-25?

The mystery will add to the excitement of the countdown.

Neil Young - Chrome Dreams II

US Chart Position
: #11

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #76 of 2007

Pitchfork Review: "Whether the album title is Young seriously trying to reconnect to a specific moment of his past or perhaps simply making an inside joke, it's an apt demonstration that he can still shapeshift with the best of them. But while Neil Young's self-fractionation abilities are intact, the low hit to miss ratio of Chrome Dreams II is proof that not all of those personae are still quite as functional as they once were, around the time of Chapter One. Though having one good trick in the bag keeps him from becoming a mere oldies jukebox like so many other 40-year rock vets, the sampler platter of Chrome Dreams II suggests his renowned versatility, by comparison to its cult-classic ancestor, ain't what it used to be." !!! - Myth Takes

US Chart Position
: #195

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #67 of 2007

Pitchfork Review: "When the album is at its less-than-best, it's because the band is playing against its strengths. From a technical standpoint, Offer's not an amazing singer. He's terrific at sultry murmurs, yelps, and chants, and luckily, he stays in these modes for most of the album. He doesn't fare as well when he just sings, as we discover on "Sweet Life". For one thing, he sounds hesitant, and his outsized party-starter persona slips a bit. For another, his lyrics tend toward the absurd, and you can only get away with lines like "sleeping underneath the blanket of dread" if you deliver them with serious bluster. But middling memories of "Sweet Life" are quickly obliterated by the impossibly funky squelch of "Yadnus", which is also a turning point-- the album's final third sinks into relative abstraction. The last three tracks' murky digressions bring the album to a brainy close that's satisfying after the brawny pageantry of its front end. By sequestering the cerebral stuff that erratically peppered their prior albums to a closing come-down, Myth Takes, presents !!! as a band that's figured out exactly what it's good at. If they stay the course, continuing to streamline and focus, we can expect many fine albums to come." (8.0)

Between The Buried And Me - Colors

Basically, this album is probably my favourite of this year. I had it at #3 but now wished I'd put it #1. Huge wtf record at times, but never does this album get boring. Hardly anything is repeated in any song either, barring the odd main riff which is revisted at times. Vocals are great aswell with numerous different styles. Basically an absolute triumph, shame to see it so low but I guess its to be expected. Vocals aren't to everyones tastes.
Saskadelphia
Between the Buried and Me: higher than I expected, a very pleasant surprise!

Stars: disappointingly low. Love that album a ton.

I completely forgot that !!! album was even released this year. Listened to it a handful of times when it came out. I can remember thinking it was decent though.

Seeing this ranked at all makes me happy. So far I have 2 of my Top 30 on here (this and Dungen), so I'm happy. I'll probably have a handful more in the lower end of the top 100, and at least one, and only one, in the Top 40. Just seeing ANYTHING I voted for make it on, regardless of placement, pleases me greatly.

Yeah, I enjoyed seeing the Sultan make it. With 177 lists, I'm guessing there has to be a reasonable amount of consensus for an album to make the hundred.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Ire Works

US Chart Position
: #142

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AV Club Review: When drummer-songwriter Chris Pennie defected to Coheed And Cambria earlier this year, Dillinger Escape Plan was left with a mess on its hands. Founding guitarist Ben Weinman and company painstakingly scraped together Ire Works, the group's first full-length since 2004's bar-raising Miss Machine. The ache paid off: While not as epic as Machine, Ire Works is a fractured, ambitious disc that lulls and thunders with equal force. After some typical—though wincingly raw—math-metal in the form of "Fix Your Face" and "Lurch," the album hits its biggest surprise, "Black Bubblegum." As the name implies, it's a dark pop opus crawling with Greg Puciato's sultry snarl and haunting falsetto. If there was ever any doubt about the impact Mike Patton had on Dillinger after appearing on its 2002 EP, Irony Is A Dead Scene, it's dispelled here—especially on the last three songs, a melodic tangle of jazzy hardcore, sardonic piano anthems, and glitch-punctured ambience. In spite of (or perhaps because of) the instability it was built on, Ire Works is a near-perfect pileup of craft and chaos—and it shows that Dillinger's recent injuries left some beautiful scars. (A-)

It was #17 on my list, but I know I saw it even higher up on a few others. Based on how much I listened to it this year I probably should have placed it even higher on my list. Oh well. It placed so I'm thrilled.
James D
That 3 of my top 10 already! It seems we're getting all the metal out of the way quickly so people can focus on all the indie or something. Oh well, great album. Probably the best DEP album there is.

I would've thought it would get more widespread appeal tbh, what with all the Faith No More influences.

Great list so far. A lot of these are the albums I didn't necessarily like very much or didn't click with, but I still think they're cool.
Asher Ford
Oh man, the singles list was excellent, but this one has already put it to shame. Grinderman? Neil Young? !!!? Mark Sultan? Awesome!

And Bruce only made number 93, no offense Bruce fans, but this pleases me immensely.

The only thing I've been disappointed with in the switch from GDB to Paul, is the "Ranked Highest By". GDB always listed all of the people who put an album in their top 5 or so, where Paul is only doing THE highest vote(s). And even that complaint is mostly just ego, I want to see MY name on some of these albums tongue.gif Otherwise great job Paul.

Also, to the Mark Sultan fans, are there any songs on that album you particularly don't like? I have one in mind, just wondering if anybody agrees.
Pavement Ist Rad
No, they're all amazing.

Have no idea what you could be talking about.

It it's "Unicorn Rainbow Odyssey," then kindly go fuck yourself.

Radical Face - Ghost

US Chart Position
:

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

Pitchfork Review: "Despite being a solo project with acoustic leanings, Radical Face is a much "bigger" album than the more electronic Electric President's 2006 debut. Home studios being what they are these days, Cooper generally gets an impressively layered sound out of his array of instruments, and he structures his songs to show his production prowess in the most flattering light. When the forceful strums and clattering background percussion of "Welcome Home"-- the melody reminds me a bit of Simon & Garfunkel with less than half the vocal range-- turns around into the soaring wordless chorus, all available space is filled and the pang of longing feels real. During its even grander climax, the longer "Glory" squeezes in whistling, a multi-tracked Cooper doing three-part harmony, loads of acoustic and electric guitars, and bashing drums. When the overdriven guitar fades out after the final chord, it segues seamlessly into a vibraphone loop mixed with crackling vinyl (a recurring motif) and the light piano that opens "Strangest Things". The transitions and sequencing here seem carefully considered, with bits of field recordings and sampled voices carrying the mood from one song to the next." (5.0)

You're thinking of ElemenoPT and the Movies poll. The Doc only ever listed the top voter.

The Mark Sultan song I spoke of is "Je Ne Savais Pa". I don't know why, but I don't like that song half as well as anything else on the album.

The album only made it to #37 on my list sadly, and looking at it now I could only really move it up another 5 spots at best. It was a tough year to compete in.

Also: Radical Face! Another great album!

What other King Khan/Mark Sultan/BBQ record should I hear next after Verses and What is?!? These people are just too great, I'm playing "Two Left Feet" on repeat right now.
