Crow & Kravitz, wtf is this, 1993?

Jason Collett - Here's to Being Here

Really digging this artwork for some reason I can't quite put my finger on.

Sheryl Crow - Detours

Even though I haven't cared for her last few albums I'll still give this one a chance based on the strength of her first three. I'm allowed one rootsy MOR guilty pleasure, no?

HorrorPops - Kiss Kiss Kill Kill

Normally I wouldn't give psychobilly bullcrap the time of day, but they're Danish, so I'm making an exception.

Hot Chip - Made in the Dark

Perhaps you have heard of these fellows.

Lenny Kravitz - It Is Time for a Love Revolution

You've come a long way, Lenny. From Let Love Rule to Love Revolution in 19 short years. Something about the use of "it is" as opposed to "it's" cracks me up. So prophetic, solemn.

Bob Mould - District Line

All Music Guide says four and a half stars. What say somb's Mould contingent?

Nada Surf - Lucky

Fucking YAWN, dudes. [insert joke about listeners being unlucky]

School of Language - Sea from Shore

This is some kind of Field Music side project on Thrill Jockey, which means at least two or three people here will give a shit.

They Might Be Giants - Here Come the 123's

I can't decide if TMBG have completely fucking sold out, or they just really, really love kids. Either way: gross.

Yip-Yip - Two Kings of the Same Kingdom

AMG's review features the word "Nintendo." That's probably all you need to know.
Diesel
I preordered the Mould; should be getting in next few days.

Its posted on MySpace, BTW. I've only listened to the streaming version once (IMO, MySpace is no way to properly appreciate/get anything out a record), but I like it, of course. Pretty mid-tempo through much of it, though ... probably his most low-key album since Workbook, but I'm reserving thoughts until I hear it properly.

Yes, there's still some electronic stuff and vocoder, at least on one song. Otherwise, guitars ahoy. I should read the Allmusic review.

And there once was a time I loved TMBG ... now I can't bring myself to buy their records. Though they're still really fun live.

One of which would be me, not as good as the last Field Music album, but a 'solid' (I don't like using that term but fuck it) album

UK releases:

The Duke Spirit – 'Neptune'
Laura Marling - 'Alas, I Cannot Swim'
One Night Only – 'Started A Fire'

Pointless Morrissey GH as well.

Jason Collett - Here's to Being Here

Really digging this artwork for some reason I can't quite put my finger on.

You've got probably 30 seconds to edit this alley-oop before TKB shows up with his unique brand of totally irreverant humor.

Adele - 19

This first track is amazing. The rest pretty much sucks.

Worth it just for the Portishead remix of the title track.

dbrigs
I can't imagine that Nada Surf album being as lame as you're making it out to be. Tomorrow we will see though...

Saskadelphia

The classic concert film gets it long-awaited DVD release tomorrow...hope I find it.

It is time for Lenny Kravitz to go away

Mine's Shelby Lynne, if she counts in that category.

I need to pick up the Hot Chip and have a listen to the Laura Marling.

There was a dude next to me on the train jamming out to Are You Gonna Go My Way a few weeks ago. I was shocked that people voluntarily listen to this guy.
Soundscape
2 other Metal releases tomorrow

Brain Drill - APOCALYPTIC FEASTING

Hate - MORPHOSIS

^this guy appears to be only available as an import. I may have to hold off on that for awhile.

It is indeed a new year...where Yancy speaks kindly of Sheryl Crow?!

Yancy speaks kindly of Sheryl Crow?!

Her second and third albums are both pretty great. Like a lot of artists, it seems like Sheryl had a finite number of good songs in her, and ran out a decade ago.

"If It Makes You Happy" was a great song.

That Jason Collett album is a good listen. I'm a fan of "Roll on Oblivion," but after that I lose some interest.

I'd admit to owning prior Sheryl Crow albums, but I would never use he word "rootsy" to describe her.

Don't forget the new Dead Meadow record:

Dead Meadow - Old Growth

I haven't heard it yet, but here's to hoping it's good. Anyone heard it yet and have some thoughts?

I second that, this album as a whole is really kind of boring, also it sounds like he's just trying to be dylan.

I listened to some of it briefly yesterday

Lenny Kravitz's "It was time for a love revolution but everyone stayed at home and watched SNL", Bob Mould's piece (I deleted it after the 3rd song). Nada Surf as I recall was some 4/4 rock'n'roll sh!t. Nothing interesting here, moving on.
Mike N.
Oh yeah, Adele. You thought that Vampire Weekend fell a prey to Hype Machine? Think again. That's one of the blandest works of the year. Someone actually compared her to Winehouse. What a joke!
theremin
My bad...is was track 2 that kicks ass.

Is that Mike Watt on bass? It sounds like some Dos shit.

UK releases:

The Duke Spirit – 'Neptune'

A little progress from the first album, she has such a great Nico/Siouxsie voice and getting QOTSA's producer Chris Goss has paid some dividend. However I can only say that I only really, really like the single, "My Sunken Treasure", "Send A Little Love Token" and "Wooden Heart" 7.4

Laura Marling - 'Alas, I Cannot Swim'

Obviously I think she’s the best thing since sliced bread. While she’ll always be compared to Kate Nash, Lily Allen, Amy McDonald, Duffy and Adele due to her age and gender the songs and song-writing on this is so strong that you can just forget all references to ‘good for age’ that might be mentioned, it’s good enough to be compared to the best of the genre. Bound to be one of the folk albums of the year and in my book is only third to BSP and Vampire Weekend for album of the year right now. Stunning. 8.6

One Night Only – 'Started A Fire'

Can't even be bothered to listen to this, the single is pants and one review described them as a Northern English Stellastar*

Probably my favorite album so far this year. Certainly my most played. I think it shows a lot of growth in writing, performance and production over the first album, which was pretty damn good to begin with. The music is more varied, with the slower more nuanced songs like "Dog Roses", "Wooden Heart", and "Sovereign" every bit as good as the rave-ups. There are no bad songs on this.

I've only given this a couple of listens so far, but it's really quite lovely. She has a timeless quality in her voice and her writing. I think a few people might dismiss this as simple singer-songwriter fare, but that would be a big mistake. I was walking around in the snowfall the other day, and was a bit freaked out by the birds underpinning "My Little Doll" and the space between that and whatever the hidden track is called ("Alas, I Cannot Swim"?). I actually thought they were outside my headphones. A wonderful touch.

To be fair I have only listened to it twice this month and on when it leaked (November?) I'll take your word on the slower songs as they are the ones that creep up after a few listens on any album like this.
