I discovered this guy in
this thread and I absolutely can't stop listening. I agree with whoever said that this guy needs his own thread.
Laughter's An Asshole / Lion Land is seriously becoming an early top ten contender for me. Listen to "Save Your Love For Me", "Plenty of Water For Mud", "Smile For Me", "Heaven's With You Tonight", and tell me you're not blown away.

I get a huge Low-era David Bowie feel with "Save Your Love For Me". During the falsetto at around 1:00 I wanted to start singing "Blue, blue, electric blue, that's the color of my room". and that electronic breakdown at 1:56 kills me.

Just listened to Laughter's an Asshole, really fun to listen to. I love the melodies on just about every song. It sort of reminds me of a weirder Akron/Family. Don't have any favorites yet, other than Smile For Me, but I feel that's a given.
On to Lion Land.

Ok, after listening to Lion Land, I must say I'm more fond of "Laughter's An Asshole." It's strange though, I have a hard time deciding what some of my favorites are. I just like listening to the whole thing through.
That being said, "By the Riverbank" and "Warm in the Sun-Worn in the Sun" off Lion Land are pretty terrific.
I have a feeling a lot of drugs went into writing these records.

I thought this stuff would be right up my ally but I'm not getting so super into it. It seems to be a case of the "trying too hards" in the silly department. It might just be the initial weirdness of it but right now I'm not as into it as simian and co.

I don't know if that's the case though because most of my favorite music is wierder (by my own opinion). I think it doesn't commit to being wierd enough or is too weird for the underlying music. maybe it has nothing to do with any of this and I just don't like it as much as other people. I'll give it some time and see.

well, i'm nuts about it. there is a little old-school Lips running through these two records, yes, but i wouldn't name them as a huge influence. what i'm reminded of most, as far as scope and variety of songs is Jack Logan's
Bulk. anybody remember that guy? and maybe older Mercury Rev...

it starts out slow and creepy, singing about "Rita Lolita... being as soft as a porcupine" and then turns into this amazing twisted Beatles stomp, slips back into creepy mellow land again and then floats away in this light and airy ethnic waltz thing.
this guy is genius.

Quinn Walker's albums are incredible... I have been listening for some time now. One thing I have noticed is there are a few people who start listening to it and can't stop. Then there is the vast majority that doesn't get it, think its too weird, or trying to be weird, or that it just sounds crappy... I think its some of the most unique refreshing sounds being recorded at the present.
If you like Laughter's an Asshole / Lion Land ... Get your hands on "See you in your Ears". If you google it you can find downloads.
Also "All day Midnight"... These were the pair of albums recorded after "Laughter/LionLand"...
Also there is a really good radio performance / interview that you can listen to online. Just search for Spinning on the Air.
but seriously... listen to "See you in your Ears", it's glorious!

that's the kind of stuff i don't like about him. there are millions of bedrooms on this planet. there's a reason he 'just sits in his bedroom' in brooklyn. it feels forced and cultivated. not a comment on the music, more on the persona. sounds like just another rich kid slumming.

Umm... songs are recorded in rooms. Rich kids would probably do their slumming in a studio of sorts. Please feel free to go ahead and make assumptions. I am fine with that affecting your reaction to music, or a musician. I personally find Quinn Walker's music to be very pure, the antithesis of cultivated. Maybe that's more apparent if you have access to more of his work.
