Since we're covering the 1965-74 period, and since Dr Bill reawakened the board's interest in discussing the band a while back, I think this might be a cool thread. Anyway, I'll go first.

Yeah, but most of that thread was a discussion of the merits of In Through the Outdoor. I don't think many people actually ranked all their albums. I think you said something about a conversation you and Sausage had about that album being better than a couple of their early ones, but...

I'll chime in. I've listened to their albums in the past few weeks and was surprised how much I loved III. Here's how they rank, according to me:
IV (this will be my #2 album on the 1965-74 album list)
Physical Graffiti (one of my favorite double albums)
III (a fine CD)
II (this one slipped down a bit, though it's still solid)
Houses of the Holy (I like this one less than most people because I've never been a fan of "The Crunge," and "No Quarter" is just OK; half of the album is first-rate, though)
Led Zeppelin (I like it, just not as much as the majority of the others)
In Through the Out Door (a decent record with some very good tracks and a couple of stinkers)
Presence (a fair CD with a couple of strong songs, including "Achilles Last Stand")
Coda (this sucks)

i feel like i could rearrange my top 3 and it wouldn't matter.
4. III

7. In Through The Out Door
i never really listened to Presence. maybe listened to Coda twice.
When I was a kid, it seemed like everyone worshipped Led Zep II. I never agreed, and it's nice to see people ranking it lower today.

I know I'd say this:

7. In Through the Out Door

9. Coda
But I don't know how I'd arrange 2 through 6. It's really tough.
Also, I know this is probably just for studio albums, but I thought I'd give a nod to How the West Was Won as being one that would be near the top of my list.

i've never listened to Coda. i really like the song "Ozone Baby," though. i've got that on the 4-disc box set.
my favorite, of late, though, is probably the HOW THE WEST WAS WON live album. the version of "Immigrant Song" kicks the album's version ass ~ and that's pretty hard to do. i appreciate "Dazed And Confused" and how it goes from one song / section to another. it sounds a lot fresher than what i remember from the SONG REMAINS THE SAME movie.
i think it's obvious that PRESENCE isn't their best album, but it's not as bad as a lot of people have made it out to be. "Candy Store Rock" and "Tea For One" aside, it's pretty good. i always liked that "Hots On For Nowhere."
and like Registered Bitch said, i'm usually drawn more to what i haven't heard in a while.

2: Zep 2 (Lemon Song and Bring it on Home never get old to me, plus this is JPJ's best bass album, and what started me playing)
3: Houses of the Holy (hate the Crunge, rest is way cool)
4: Presence (criminally underrated, the solo on "Hot's On" is amazing wasted Page)
5: Zep 1
6: Zep 4
7: Coda (some great jams, but Walter's Walk??? Where the hell did this crap come from???)
8: Zep 3 (meh, don't get the excitement, side two makes me way sleepy, Out on the Tiles is pretty rockin)
9: In Through the Out Door (I loathe Caroselambra and Hot Dog and I'm gonna crawl ain't so good either)

i found it interesting that allmusic.com considers IV to be the choice for best zeppelin album whereas the clear 1-2 on this board are PG and HOH. while IV received only 1 first place vote here, it did receive the most second place votes, suggesting perhaps that some around these parts are too cool for school to go with a "predictable" choice as their favorite zep album

It probably does not even need saying that we
all think we're too cool for school. It's a given.
Physical Graffitti is better than IV though. Probably HOH too.

I'm a very casual admirer of Zep wouldn't even classify myself a fan
but last year I gave them a serious listen and while I grew to appreciate them more especially 1-2and 3 I found PG all but unlistenable save a few tracks never got all the way through it one time without skipping tracks
what is so appealing to you all about this meandering record that feels so bloated
is it simply the need to stand out thus ending up being the majority??

Before people get all uppity - here's my explanations for some which may have raised eyebrows.
Presence is an underrated gem. Not a masterpiece, but not a disaster like a lot of people think. It and II are interchangeable. Today I like Presence more.
Physical Graffiti is too sprawling and chocked up with filler to be a true classic, but is still brilliant.
Check the In Through the Out Door thread for my thoughts on that album. Needless to say I love it.
Houses of the Holy is a poor album made up of some very good songs. 'The Rain Song', 'No Quarter', 'The Ocean' and 'Over the Hills and Far Away' are some of their very best, but the rest of the songs aren't great and the flow of the album is terrible.

how isn't "crunge" a shitty song? robert plant signing like he's james brown or something. and page's riff is fucking horrible.

What's wrong with singing like James Brown? All these British greats in rock music were doing their best imitation of the old black blues artists (and doing it better in a lot of cases) before they developed their own sound, and this is the Zeppelin ode to funk. Throbbing baseline, funkadelic riff, well placed keyboards, and Plant dishing the pseudo-soul.

Observations: From 'Houses of the Holy' to the culinary danger-zone
By Gerard Gilbert
The Independent
Friday, 5 February
He may have eaten sheep's testicles in Afghanistan and baby seal in the Arctic, but what has really traumatised Stefan Gates, presenter of BBC Two's Cooking in the Danger Zone, is the cover of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, which was released in 1973 when Gates was just five years old. The ten blond juveniles in this cleverly constructed collage were in fact only two – Stefan Gates himself and his older sister, Samantha. It's an image that the now middle-aged food journalist describes as having "followed me around for my entire life. I am scared of it... and I do feel there is something bad in there."
Gates was too young to remember much about the shoot on the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland in November 1972. His Radio 4 programme, Stefan Gates' Cover Story, is his attempt to exorcise the childhood experience. Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey 'Po' Powell, known collectively as Hipgnosis, designed album covers for the Seventies rock aristocracy. Dark Side of the Moon is one of theirs, as is Animals. Houses of the Holy was the first of four for Led Zep.
Gates describes himself as "quite anxious" as he knocks on Powell's door in west London – a feeling I know was being reciprocated on the other side, because Powell is a neighbour of mine. "I was slightly apprehensive as well", he says."The last time I saw Stefan, he was this naked little boy on a rock. So I wasn't quite sure what to expect... some terrible confrontation perhaps. In fact the first thing he said to me was 'Oh, I expected you to be wearing a dirty old man's raincoat'..."
Powell is quick to stress the different attitudes of the time. "You couldn't possibly do that album cover now... But you've got to put this in the context of the time. I came out of the peace and love movement where everybody danced on acid and ran around naked."
The shoot took place over five cold, wet days. As if the poor light and driving sleet wasn't bad enough, they ran out of greasepaint to colour Stefan and Samantha gold and silver and resorted to using car spray paint. "Their mother was unaware until she saw us hastily washing it off with turps in the bath".
Powell sold the artwork back to Led Zep two years ago. "Look...", he says, passing a box of coasters embossed with his design for Dark Side of the Moon. "I also sold my artwork back to Pink Floyd and they've made beer mats out of it, which has pissed me off. Do these rock stars need the money?'" We agree that nobody is likely to make coasters out of Houses of the Holy. The cover's very content may actually be what keeps it sacred.
Don't know what the situation is for you chaps in the colonies, accessing BBC broadcasts, but there's a half hour show on this here -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qfzbwFTR, he is a bit of a moany twat and his sister is cool.
Duff.

The cover did kinda freak me out as a twelve year old, particularly coupled with that one part in "The Ocean."
