I saw Elliott do that song where he forgot a couple of lyrics right before that. So then he said the "'cause he's fuckin' up even the simplest lines" part, shaking his head and smiling, laughing at himself.

shrug!
UselessRocker

90% of the guy's catalogue.

I'm a huge fan of Elliott's songs named after and about alcohol. Seriously. "Christian Brothers" and "St. Ides Heaven" are two of my favorites songs ever.

I actually like "No Name #3" the best of the no-name songs. I just love the mood of it and the little Harrison-y guitar bit about halfway through.

Hans Christian Anderson
good question, although i only know two of his records really well (either/or and XO)....

i love baby britain for being about as close to a '65-67-era beatles song as anyone has ever written.

either/or is a total gamble, there's about 5 songs vying for that title.

i really should get more of his stuff. where should i go next?
UselessRocker
God dammit, Pinkerton. I have to go to the dentist in a few minutes and now this thread has me thinking about old memories of seeing Elliott live and Elliott memories with old friends and girlfriends and I'm getting all emotional and what not.

if yuou like the more beatle-y stuff you'd probably have to go with figure 8.

but youd be best getting the entire catalog really. and spin xo a few more hundred times.

i acutally wouldn't say i like it more, i probably do prefer the lo-fi stuff. however, i really can't think of a better imitation of the beatles from that era than baby britain, and he should be acknowledged for that alone.
HewlettsDaughter
if you like the more lo-fi stuff, you would love his self-titled disc

Roman Candle is also lo-fi stuff, but i think it only has a few really great songs and the rest are just good.
forgo
also, listen to xo more.
HewlettsDaughter
listen to Either/Or more than XO

i've listened to both of these records plenty and enjoy them both quite a bit. however, i'm feeling inspired to give XO a spin when i jump on my bus in 15 minutes. it's been a while.

it's either gonna be XO or the jam's all mod cons...

Awesome! Thanks man, look forward to hearing this more than anything in a while.

currently alameda is making me want to exit all the something and enter big nothing, not in reference to another elliott smith song, but somehow it worked out
davidortiz
thanks for the bootleg pinkerton, makes me sad i never got to see him play.

and just for the record, "pitseleh" is the jam.

summer after junior year i was living on campus, and depressed, and listening a bit to mr. smith.
needless to say that song made me buy more than a few 20/20's that summer.

you say you mean wellllllllllll

*PIANO SOLO*

FUCK YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

i havent heard this song in ages. this one part fucking makes me want to say fuck a lot. FUCK.

i remember senior year of college, my uncle just died and i was driving around long island aimlessly to this song on repeat. oh those were good gena times.
Hans Christian Anderson
that quote caught me offguard listening to this album again today. it almost made me chuckle.

and ortiz is right, pitseleh is the jam.

it really is. i went a few rounds with that song today. the piano? good christ that makes forgo cry.

the only downside to the entire album is amity. and once you get passed teh first 30 or so seconds it turns int o a pretty rad song.

i was listening to Either/Or yesterday... winter blues?

amity had long been my least favorite XO jam, and upon revisiting it today, i came to pretty much the same conclusion as you, really only the first 30 seconds or so sucks.

man, good.

everyone and their mother loves that song for being the "rock" hit on xo. XO ISNT ABOUT ROCK AND ROLL ITS ABOUT SLITTING WRISTS, FUCKERS.

anyway.

the first time i saw you i knew it would never last
i'm not half what i wish i was
i'm so angry
i don't think it'll ever pass
and i was bad news for you just because
i never meant to hurt you
Hans Christian Anderson
as great as that piano is, the guitar part is what gets me.
forgo
really, you haven't lived until you start bawling uncontrollably to 'twilight'. 2004, HOLLA!

i really think pinkerton should apologize to the rest of the board because i am now in prime FUCK LIFE ELLIOTT SMITH party time 08 mode.
fakeconcerns
Hazzah an Elliott thread! Goddamn I love the man.

Seconding or thirding or whatever-ing XO as a masterpiece. I can't even guess how many times I've listened to that record. Also, it's been repessed and you can pick up the XO and Fig 8 LPs here: http://www.auralexploits.com/artist_29.htm

Also, I'm really in love with the alternative version of Pretty Mary K, but not the one on New Moon, that same version just without the drums. SO good.

And finally, I think Punch and Judy is actually a perfect song. PERFECT.
forgo
coast to coast is actually a pretty great song. i always skip it.

so go. go see whats there for you
nothing new, nothing new for you to use
i've got no new act to amuse you
i've got no desire to use you, you know
but anything that i could do, would never be good enough for you
if you can't help it then just leave it alone (leave it alone)
leave it alone, yeah, just forget it
it's really easy
i believe i'll forget it too
still you're keepin' me around
til i finally drag us both down
