they are like a much better andre 3000, with a far sounder sense of funk. and a lot sexier.
Ha, nice. I always sort-of admired what Andre was trying to do on that later stuff but it always seemed to me that he kept on slightly missing.
EDIT: By debut, are you talking about
The Hollywood Recordings?

yep. there were a lot of 12s before that, including the 2x12 second time around, but i believe hollywood recordings was their first album proper.

re: sa-ra
i caught wind of them last spring but never got around to trying them out. on the merit of their nu amerykah stuff i got the hollywood recordings and for the most part i was pretty disappointed. they aren't like a better andre, they suffer the same weaknesses and succeed on the same strengths. they're talented dudes, to be sure, but they need a little more focus before they really hit on something special. hollywood recordings had moments of pure brilliance, but it was scattershot and watery.
at least for me. i'll keep checking their stuff out and i'll keep rooting for them, but they still got some maturing to do.

I'm with you on the Matmos but I've found the Fuck Buttons album to be mostly a joke. I don't know, I saw them live and it was awesome and all... and I like their philosophy. The music though is pretty pedestrian. It's definitely a start though. I bet their next album will be insane.
My top 10 as of today:
1 why - alopecia
2 M83 - saturdays = youth
3 portishead - third
4 stephen malkmus - real emotional trash
5 cut copy - in ghost colors
6 autechre - quaristice

8 british sea power - dylrm
9 fleet foxes - st
10 clark - turning dragon

Yeah. I think I find Fuck Buttons to be largely overrated at this point. It seems like they're getting hype simply because they're different as apposed to actually being brilliant. I'm not finding the music itself THAT great.
As you say though, I'd be amazed if they didn't improve on their next album.

Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Ljudbilden and Piloten - One Hundred and Fifty-Five

You'll enjoy 2-3 of the 7 songs. Half of them are minimal classical sort of experiments with synths, and there are a few poppy tracks as always. I might be one of the few who would say it's their weirdest and most unlistenable, since a lot of it is pure minimalism a la Rainbow in Curved Air.

Its not really wierd shit at all. Just a lot of nice electronic sounds put together into one cool little cohesive product. In any case, the title track which is 20+ minutes long is probably the best song I've heard all year. Essential listening for this year imo.

top five (no order)
Deep Space Homer
And Maggie Makes Three
Last Exit to Springfield
