The Sword - Gods Of The Earth is the only thing I've kept coming back to so far this year. Love it.
I wanted to like the Louris record but it just isn't doing it for me. The more I listen to it, the more MOR its sounding. Not bad in the least, its just not doing much for me. I did just score a promo of the "Acoustic Vagabonds" disc though. I'll be spinning that soon.
I am way behind on listening. Haven't heard the Portishead, Patton or Malkmus yet.

Probably not. My tastes in music are sometimes so vastly different from people here that sometimes I feel like I shouldn't even post. However, there are a number of people here who have praised Elbow's latest, and a few actually responded to my posting of the BRS album... so maybe not all hope is lost. When it comes to my "safer" musical endeavors though I generally won't even talk about them.
EDIT: I'm only on track 6 of the new M83, but I don't think I'll be listening to this again. A shame, I guess... but it's never like I was a big fan anyway. I just love Moonchild and Don't Save Us from the Flames a lot.

I like this M83 more than their others. I thought the last one had a couple mind-bending tracks and a whole lot of filler. This record has more of a narrative, more vocals, more Pretty In Pink (record and movie). I love the poppy stuff like "Kim & Jessie." Pairs nicely with Neon Neon. It's like the bliss-out ambient version of that record.

I'll actually probably give it another shot. I generally never really like things on first listen anyway, even by artists I have previously really enjoyed. Heck, two of my top three so far this year wouldn't have even made it had I kept that sort of mentality.

2008 is already off to a great start for me; I've already heard like 20-plus records, and that seldom ever happens with me this early into a year. Still need to give several more listens before I can really judge, but so far:
1. Meshuggah - obZen
2. Genghis Tron - Board Up The House
3. Bob Mould - District Line
... have clearly emerged as the three favorites.
Others I'm enjoying:
To-Mera - Delusions
Boris - Smile
Black Mountain - In The Future
Foals - Antidotes
Saviours - Into Abaddon
Leviathan - Massive Consipiracy Against All Life
The Sword - Gods of the Earth

So far on this M83 (track 2) I already like it better than any other M83 album. He's writing pretty good pop melodies, I think. It sounds like old Slowdive mixed with New Order. This works pretty perfectly. I love this kind of shoegaze-y super emotional pop shit though, so I don't know.

Can't say I dsagree with the MOR vibe. Chris Robinson and his team really fucked up that record. Still the songs underneath that candy coating are pretty good as evidenced by the acoustic EP being excellent.

Thx for the link. I'm a few songs in and so far this sucks a giant pair of donkey balls. I hate it when bands move away from their strengths for the sake of being "different"(see Air). Unless you're Pink floyd, Neil Young, Bowie or Radiohead, you have to know your limitations.
Sometimes you are what you are.
Edit: I'm crushed. This album sucks. And it has this awful candy coating sheen over everything. I had such high hopes for this. Looks like the last two are the best M83 is going to offer. That's pretty good I guess, since those are outstanding.

I really think this is better than the last one, and a step behind Dead Cities. There isn't any "In Church" or "Run Into Flowers." Those two songs prompt me to lose my mind and drift into high school moods, though. This could get to that level. It sounds like what M83 has been all along, they're voices have drifted out of the fog now.

i'm sure the M83 will get a lot of supporters, i think there are some decent songs, but they're just okay songs that sound like better songs.
that, and because it doesn't have an interesting new take on the '80s sound, i think it's a big failure (despite the craftsmanship)
solace
Mar 19 2008, 02:59 PM
there's only a couple of songs that are 80's-ish for me, and that's simply the choice of synth sounds. as much as i love their previous 2 albums, i can appreciate the more fully fleshed songwriting on this record. there was always a couple tracks on the other records that didn't do a lot for me.
like i said, not gonna say it's an amazing album or anything (way too soon anyway), but i'm not disappointed with it either, it's too different of a sound for them to fully digest yet.

I don't think anyone is "deeply in love" with the new R.E.M.
I think those that like it are very pleased with its sound and ability to actually be fun.
And I have never heard the BSP record, so I guess i am not deeply in love with it, either.
