I think I'll wait until they come to the midwest, which I hope happens.

You going to any of these Solace? Do you follow them around much or just wait for them to come to you?

i wasn't planning to travel for them this year at all, but the 6/24 MSG date is our 2nd anniversary and the 10th anniversary of when my wife and I met at a Pearl Jam show in Rapid City, so we're gonna hit up DC and visit our friends that moved there 2 years ago and then the MSG shows. should be fun, and will be neat seeing Ted Leo open.

Solace, any word if they'll be adding any more dates or is this it?

other than the long rumored RNC/DNC shows w/ Rage & Green Day in Minneapolis & Denver, i think this will be it for this year.

Whatever one thinks of Pearl Jam, you have to give them credit for always choosing great openers and (hopefully) introducing those people to a wider audience.

^ what he said. Forget how you feel about their music, Pearl Jam has always been great about that. (personally, I like most of PJ's stuff, have all their records, and think they do a far better job than most artists who reach their level at practicing independent values, being active in their local music scene and community, etc. When selecting a support act, most artists at their level defer to whichever opener the label, manager, or agent are trying to develop.

I saw Ted Leo twice last year in Seattle, a KEXP members-only show at Triple Door (like Park West only 1/3 the size) and at Bumbershoot (festival). He blew me away both times. Great for him, to be on a tour where he'll playing for a few thousand more folks than usual. They'll mostly be filing in and getting situated during his set, but some of them will be geeks like us, who will hit the merch stand and either buy the record or at least sign up for the email list. Ted will break more new ground for his career on this tour than he would playing for the already-converted on a club tour of his own.

I agree w/Maloney, to a point.
PJ does a great job o selecting opening acts. As an example I've seen Frank Black, The Buzzcocks, My Mornning Jacket and others open for them.
Unfortunately it seems most people ignore/tolerate the opening act, regardless of how great they are.
I would like to see KoL & Ted Leo garner some new fans from this outing, but realisticly I doubt they'll be able to add much to their fan base. Still, I give PJ credit for trying to give a helping hand to bands that deserve wider exposure.

Solace, thanks for the info. It's always easier for me to ask you than to try slogging through PJ's own message board.

Solace,
Did you here anything about PJ headlining ACL this year? I thought they were a lock.
I would hate to get east coast tix and then find out they are playing ACL.

Kings of Leon have now opened for PJ on 3 or 4 different tours and have gained quite a bit of new fans from it. Sleater-Kinney did as well (although i know tons of PJ fans who hate them, mostly Corin's vocals).

both these men speak the truth. PJ does pick great opening acts that definitely pick up new acts as a result of opening for PJ, but it's not like the exposure propels them to arenas either. maloney especially speaks the truth regarding pearl jams integrity, regardless of what you happen to think of thieir music. personally, they're one of my all time favorite bands, but that's still beside the point. they're about as "cool" as stadium level bands get (NIN and radiohead are about the only other two i can think of from the 90s alt-rock explosion)

Vedder Warms Up For Solo Trek With Seattle Gigs
Eddie Vedder

March 26, 2008, 11:00 AM ET

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder stunned Seattle fans who'd bought tickets for a screening of "Into the Wild" on Monday and Tuesday by instead performing a full solo set, in advance of the April 2 launch of his maiden solo tour.

Tickets to the gigs at Kenyon Hall were sold for $5 by Easy Street Records, with less than 150 people on hand each night. A number of fans who lined up outside the venue but were initially unable to get inside were treated to coffee by the Easy Street staff, before being ushered in gratis after the show had started.

Vedder played guitar for most of the shows but also strapped on a banjo for Cat Stevens' "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" and switched to harmonica, mandolin and ukulele on a host of other tunes.

As expected, the set lists mixed Pearl Jam tracks ("Around the Bend," "I Am Mine," "Dead Man") with songs from Vedder's "Into the Wild" soundtrack ("Guaranteed," "No Ceiling," "Society") and a bevy of covers (Bruce Springsteen's "Growin' Up," Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down," Bob Dylan's "Forever Young, Tom Waits' "Picture in a Frame").

Also performed were James Taylor's "Millworker," unreleased solo cuts like "Broken Hearted" and “You’re True,” and "No More," Vedder's contribution to the recent "Body of War" compilation album. Last night, the artist occasionally flubbed lyrics, but endeared the audience with apologies for Pearl Jam not having played in Seattle proper since the spring of 2005.

In related news, the guitar Vedder used to write the Pearl Jam song "Love Boat Captain" sold for $8,000 last night during a West Memphis 3 fundraiser at the New York home of Peter, Paul & Mary's Peter Yarrow. Pearl Jam has long been a vocal advocate for the innocence of the men, who were convicted of the 1993 murder of three eight-year-old boys in West Memphis, Ark.

A new hearing in the case, which will present DNA evidence defense attorneys claim exonerates the men, is scheduled for April 14

I know there is no recording equipment allowed for those solo shows but I sure hope some recordings are made somehow. That show sounds awesome.

Back on topic, two tentative shows will go up for sale on Apr 1st at the Ten Club:

Jun 20------Camden, NJ------Susquehanna------
Jun 28------Mansfield, MA----Tweeter Amp.----
