STATEMENT OF AIR AMERICA RADIO, FROM CHAIR CHARLIE KIREKER
New York - Air America has suspended on-air host Randi Rhodes for making inappropriate statements about prominent figures, including Senator Hillary Clinton, at a recent public appearance on behalf of Air America in San Francisco which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station.
"Air America encourages strong opinions about public affairs but does not condone such abusive, ad hominem language by our Hosts," said chair Charlie Kireker.

John Scott, Program Director of Green960 [KKGN-AM], speaks out:
"We have been very frustrated the past few days in our efforts to rectify the Randi Rhodes Situation (her suspension by her network, Air America Radio). It is our understanding that today (April 9th) she is no longer an employee of Air America. So we are bringing her back."
Monday, April 14th at 4pm... it will be our pleasure to announce the return of Randi Rhodes to the Green 960 family.

This has been in effect for quite awhile now and while I'm no huge fan of Randi Rhodes, it seemed like an odd thing. I've been quite pleased that Sam Seder, who I really like and don't often get to hear, has taken over for her. Judging by the callers and comments, it would seem that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I like Randi 70% of the time, she can be a little annoying, but suspending her was outragious. Sam Seder is a little pussy that has nothing intelligent to say. Thom Hartman is the man

Green 960???

We'll have to agree to disagree -- I think Hartman is a bit of a twat.

Scoff if you will, but it's probably going to be the next mini-wave of terrestrial radio formats.

I can't stop thinking about the other Randy Rhoads every time I see this thread. Lo and behold:

Her married name is Randi Robertson; Rhodes is a stage name chosen to honor Ozzy Osbourne's guitar player Randy Rhoads, whom Rhodes describes as "a consummate professional ... who lived to be the best."

Man, never heard of Green 960 but now I love them.

I remember Randi Rhodes from her time as a DJ in Miami. I think it was the early 90s she came back to do talk radio, on the same station as Neil Rogers. South Florida political talk radio was great for a few years in the early-to-mid 90s - a bunch of whacked out, polarizing hosts who spent most of their time fighting with each other and intentionally pissing off callers. Randi, Neil, Rick Seiderman, Al Rantel, Steve Kane, Joyce Kaufman...good times.

Not much has changed for Randi.

She had actually gotten a little better in the weeks before her suspension, but she can be pretty unbearable at times.

For a second I thought I'd won my decade-long bet that Randy Rhoads would come back to life and become a radio host. Shit.

She quit.

Randi Rhodes, the radio talk show host who was suspended last week from Air America after going on an obscenity-laced tirade against Hillary Clinton and one of her prominent supporters, has resigned.

Mark Green, president of Air America Media, told FOXNews.com that Rhodes terminated her contract Wednesday after she refused to apologize on air for her remarks.

“We sought an apology, because of what she had said … Like Imus, like David Shuster,” Green said. “She refused and instead last night informed us she was terminating her contract with Air America, which she has the option to do.”

He said she was not forced out — “She exercised her option.”

Rhodes used the obscene language during a March 22 event sponsored by an affiliate station in San Francisco. During what was an apparent stand-up routine, Rhodes attacked Geraldine Ferraro, the former vice presidential candidate, for saying that Clinton rival Barack Obama has benefited in the Democratic presidential race because he is black.

“Geraldine Ferraro turned out to be the David Duke in drag. Who knew?” Rhodes said to laughter. “What a whore Geraldine Ferraro is, she’s such a f*****g whore.”

A few minutes later, Rhodes said, “Hillary is a big f*****g whore too.”

She then suggested Clinton was trying to force her way into the Democratic nomination by manipulating pledged delegates. “Oh, f**k you, okay, f**k you,” she said.

Air America condemned the remarks and Ferraro said at the time Rhodes should be fired.

“It was an abusive obscene thing she said, whether one likes or doesn’t like Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or John McCain,” Green said Thursday.

The termination was effective Wednesday, and Green does not know who will replace her.

A report on Radioandrecords.com said Rhodes is likely heading to Green 960 AM, KKGN, the San Francisco station that sponsored the March 22 event.

“We wish her well and thank her for past services to Air America. We will soon announce exciting new talent and programming that will accelerate Air America’s growth in the future,” Air America Media Chairman Charlie Kireker and Green said in a joint statement on the Air America Web site Thursday.

Green said Air America will announce within a day who who will temporarily replace her during her daily 3-to-6 p.m. show.

Green said Rhodes had been there four years, and “she could have worked another year.”

Ditto on the Randy/Randi confusication; when I first saw this I thought "They won't play "Crazy Train" on Air America?"

Randi has a bit of a horse face, doesn't she?

Update: Rhodes Leaves Air America For Nova M

By Mike Stern

Suspended talker Randi Rhodes and Air America network parted company on Wednesday (April 9), but Rhodes won't be gone for long. Starting Monday (April 14), her show will be syndicated by the Nova M Radio Network live from 3-6 p.m. ET.

Nova M CEO John Manzo says, "I just can't stop smiling -- Randi is simply the biggest and the best. Randi Rhodes and Mike Malloy under one roof -- talk about TALENT!"

Rhodes returned the adoration, "With Manzo at helm of Nova M, I am truly going to work for the best of the best."

Rolling out the show is going exceptionally well, says Manzo, who tells R&R, "Many affiliates came in one big block, namely the Clear Channel stations," and "another slew committed after the deal was official." Manzo says the smaller independent stations are still being reached out to, but he "hasn't heard a firm 'no' yet from anyone," adding, "In fact, I can't recall getting so much industry support for a single move ever before."

Rhodes was suspended indefinitely last week by Air America following remarks she made at an appearance for KKGN/San Francisco, where she called both Hillary Clinton and Geraldine Ferraro "f--cking bitches."

Earlier Thursday (April 10), Air America released this statement, "Last week, Air America suspended Randi Rhodes for abusive, obscene language at a recent public appearance in San Francisco, which was sponsored by an Air America affiliate station. Air America Media was informed last night by Ms. Rhodes that she has chosen to terminate her employment with the company. We wish her well and thank her for past services to Air America. We will soon announce exciting new talent and programming that will accelerate Air America's growth in the future."

The Huffington Post reports that Rhodes quit rather than apologize for what she said. The post quotes an anonymous source as saying, "Many people screw up and then apologize and move on. Like David Shuster. Like Obama on Rezko. Like Hillary on Bosnia. Randi Rhodes refused to apologize for her obscene comments and has chosen instead to terminate her relationship with Air America." The source added, "No one is upset. She made the move, but there's relief and joy."

The Huffington Post also reports that Richard Belzer will fill Rhodes' 3-6 p.m. slot on Air America next week

For those not familiar with Nova M Radio, the network was started by the original founders of Air America Radio, Sheldon and Anita Drobny, who left Air America not long after it was formed. In addition to Malloy and now Rhodes, Nova M Radio operates KPHX/Phoenix.
