I haven't watched much TV lately, but here's what I'd recommend on DVD:
The Larry Sanders ShowCable TV's first great show. Groundbreaking stuff, set the tone for dozens of faux-documentaries, Hollywood satires, and 'edgy' comedies created in its wake, from Arrested Development to the Office. And, of course, no laugh track. Unfortunately, it hasn't had a comprehensive release, but the "Best of" box set should more than suffice.
Homicide: Life On The Streets - Seasons 1 & 2Actually, season 2's only 5 episodes. The Wire's David Simon began his career in TV with THIS series, based on his award-winning non-fiction book. Blows the bland, formulaic Law & Orders right out of the water. Unfortunately, ratings never took off, and with season 3, there's a noticeable change in tone and sharp drop in quality.
NewsRadioFormat is conventional (canned laugh track, multicamera studio set-up), but this was a smart, top-notch sitcom and the cast was cherry-picked from other great ensembles (Hartman from SNL, Foley from Kids in the Hall, Dick from the Ben Stiller Show...yes, Andy Dick was once funny). It's amusing how dissatisfied many of the cast members sound on the commentary because you never would've guessed from the chemistry and quality of the show. Also, few shows made better use of their guest stars, many of whom worked with the cast on previous shows: James Caan, Ben Stiller, Bob Oedenkirk, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, other New Kids in the Hall members, Jon Lovitz, Jerry Seinfeld (in a rare guest appearance - he only guested on two sitcoms during his own show's run, and Larry Sanders was the other one)...etc. Hartman's murder crippled the show, so skip the last season.
NYPD BlueI still have a soft spot for season one, even though they drove this series into the fucking ground. The first season needed a few episodes to take off, but once it got going, it was great, groundbreaking shit. And David Caruso was actually GREAT in this show. Then he got a big ego, wrecked his career, and we all found out he was a one-trick pony 'cause he plays every character like John Kelly, only he gets worse at it every time (witness CSI: Miami). When he self-destructed, the show hurt too - I like Jimmy Smits, but when he came in, the show became softer and lost a lot of its edge. Then the plots got gooey, the cast grew worse, and the show became just another TV drama.
Most of my friends watch the Sopranos and Deadwood. Haven't seen the latter, but what I've seen from the former, I like...but not that much.

So I've recently noted that I really enjoy watching TV series of DVD. However, I'm blissfully ignorant of/removed from the pulse of TV culture (past and present) and am in need of a new one to get wrapped up in. Can you recommend me a series SOMB? Here's what I like:
Funny Stuff:
Seinfeld
The Simpsons
South Park
Futurama
Arrested Development
Flight Of The Conchords
Not As Funny Stuff:
The Wire
Twin Peaks
The X-Files (some seasons not so much...)
Six Feet Under (only 50/50 on this one too)
