Hans Christian Anderson
So I've recently noted that I really enjoy watching TV series of DVD. However, I'm blissfully ignorant of/removed from the pulse of TV culture (past and present) and am in need of a new one to get wrapped up in. Can you recommend me a series SOMB? Here's what I like:

Funny Stuff:
Seinfeld
The Simpsons
South Park
Futurama
Arrested Development
Flight Of The Conchords

Not As Funny Stuff:
The Wire
Twin Peaks
The X-Files (some seasons not so much...)
Six Feet Under (only 50/50 on this one too)
Hips

Funny:
Arrested Development
The Office (US)
Black Books
Police Squad

Not Funny:
Lost

In between:
Freaks and Geeks.

I haven't watched much TV lately, but here's what I'd recommend on DVD:

The Larry Sanders Show
Cable TV's first great show. Groundbreaking stuff, set the tone for dozens of faux-documentaries, Hollywood satires, and 'edgy' comedies created in its wake, from Arrested Development to the Office. And, of course, no laugh track. Unfortunately, it hasn't had a comprehensive release, but the "Best of" box set should more than suffice.

Homicide: Life On The Streets - Seasons 1 & 2
Actually, season 2's only 5 episodes. The Wire's David Simon began his career in TV with THIS series, based on his award-winning non-fiction book. Blows the bland, formulaic Law & Orders right out of the water. Unfortunately, ratings never took off, and with season 3, there's a noticeable change in tone and sharp drop in quality.

NewsRadio
Format is conventional (canned laugh track, multicamera studio set-up), but this was a smart, top-notch sitcom and the cast was cherry-picked from other great ensembles (Hartman from SNL, Foley from Kids in the Hall, Dick from the Ben Stiller Show...yes, Andy Dick was once funny). It's amusing how dissatisfied many of the cast members sound on the commentary because you never would've guessed from the chemistry and quality of the show. Also, few shows made better use of their guest stars, many of whom worked with the cast on previous shows: James Caan, Ben Stiller, Bob Oedenkirk, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, other New Kids in the Hall members, Jon Lovitz, Jerry Seinfeld (in a rare guest appearance - he only guested on two sitcoms during his own show's run, and Larry Sanders was the other one)...etc. Hartman's murder crippled the show, so skip the last season.

NYPD Blue
I still have a soft spot for season one, even though they drove this series into the fucking ground. The first season needed a few episodes to take off, but once it got going, it was great, groundbreaking shit. And David Caruso was actually GREAT in this show. Then he got a big ego, wrecked his career, and we all found out he was a one-trick pony 'cause he plays every character like John Kelly, only he gets worse at it every time (witness CSI: Miami). When he self-destructed, the show hurt too - I like Jimmy Smits, but when he came in, the show became softer and lost a lot of its edge. Then the plots got gooey, the cast grew worse, and the show became just another TV drama.

Most of my friends watch the Sopranos and Deadwood. Haven't seen the latter, but what I've seen from the former, I like...but not that much.

I got hooked on The Shield after one or two episodes. I got too busy to keep up after a while, but I loved it. Great show. I've always wanted to check out Dexter, but I forget.

I like Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Its pretty mindless/funny.

The first season is out on DVD, and if you don't mind watching things on your computer, this youtube user has the entire series up.
Undercooked Sausage
The first 3 seasons of Battlestar Galactica are on DVD as well as the miniseries and that show is supported by some of the coolest people on the board, like myself. You won't find much better drama/sci-fi anywhere else really.

I've heard the 2nd season is much better but I've given this too many episodes to click and I'm not buying it. The voice over narration is so predictably bad and I have no emotional investment in any of these characters.

Carnivale was like "Twin Peaks in the Dust Bowl" (for gosh sakes, they even have Michael Anderson "the man from another place" playing a pivotal role as the manager of the circus troupe). They only made 2 seasons--I only saw the first season, so I think the last episode leaves you hanging, but you'll enjoy the wild ride.

American Gothic--came out after Twin Peaks rocked the country, and has many similarities, but the big difference being Gary Cole as the evil sheriff of a hick town --the Devil personified--seeking to reclaim his illegitimate son.

Police Squad!--It's not often you can get a complete series (6 episodes smile.gif) on one disc. See this great show when it still had a straight face, before the Naked Gun movie series kind of lost the spirit.
Hips

we just started netflixing these.

I've met/asked several members in person, they all say the box set is finished, with tons of extras, but for whatever reason, MTV is sitting on it. No release date scheduled as of yet.

i've been looking to pick up more seasons of The West Wing on DVD. does anyone know why they re-released seasons of the show and upped the price an extra $20? are there some extras on there? is it in 3-D or something?

Generally I would expect that they're waiting for someone in the show to star in something big.

This might be a contender:

I just got caught up on Lost recently. Lately I've been watching The Wire and 30 Rock. All are great. Also, if you haven't seen Mr. Show yet you need to see that too.

In two weeks I will be cable-free so this thread will be useful.

I second and third and forth and fifth these two recommendations. "Always Sunny" is probably my favorite show on the air now. Its characters are so lovable, yet hateable at the same time. Except for Charlie. If you hate Charlie, then there is something very, very wrong with you. Charlie is easily the best character on television.

As for Mr. Show, well, I don't think I need to explain that one. It's just fantastic.

Has anyone seen this? The short clips I've seen on YouTube are pretty damn funny.

Yeah, that was one of the two or three that I saw on youtube. So the rest of the series isn't worth getting on Netflix?

Worth a watch I guess, I certainly wouldn't recommend paying for it.
