It seems Jack White and his Raconteurs may have sparked a trend with the brisk announcement and release of Consolers of the Lonely. Rumors are circulating about a similarly swift release for the new Beck album, which could be in stores in the next 4-6 weeks. The record will be Mr. Hansen’s first full-length album since The Information in 2006, which was disqualified from entering the UK charts because it came with a pack of free stickers. Those Brits sure are harsh with their chart rules. MTV is reporting that Danger Mouse will produce the as-yet untitled album, and Cat Power has been lined up as a guest vocalist. Beck has a few U.S. dates planned, beginning at the end of August in San Francisco, CA.

hopefully it will be better than the last release. information wasn't terrible, but guero was mucho mejor

Perez says 6 weeks.
He also has a picture of Beck on which he has drawn a crude phallus and what appears to be semen shooting up from it into his open mouth.

Man I disagree. I think The Information ranks with the best of his albums. It's really hard to decide. How am I to pick my favorite from between Sea Change, Midnight Vultures, Odelay, and Mutations? It can't be done. All classic.

agreed, Guero is one of his worst album. Imformation has some great stuff and some mediocre but nothingthat just turns me away.

"Strange Apparitions" is the best song he has ever written.

I'm big into large, glaring statements today.

Right there with you. I think Odelay-->Sea Change is one of the best runs any artist has ever had. Those four are just brilliant, cohesive records. Guero and The Information are alright, but they definitely feel like second-tier Beck albums when you're comparing them to those four albums.

I've said it here before, Guero sucked. I wished I had bought Guerolito instead of that. The Information wasn't a Sea Change or a Odelay, but still ranked well with me.
LOL Alzado
never understood the dislike for Guero. I really liked that album. Hell Yes is so good i can't stand it.
cheese picture
Yeah I don't understand the hate either. Guero is at the least a fun as hell record with a few pretty amazing songs scattered throughout. Black Drum... I think it's called. One of the greatest songs beck has recorded. Boards of Canada remix was amazing as well.

My bad, it's called Broken Drum. Here it is, don't know about the video but the song is amazing:

r.i.p.
I loved the last two records, and I'm dying to hear this one. The Information is up there with his best. The only people who openly dissed the records are who worried about loving anything older than a decade. Both records were popular.
Dread
I just don't really like the songs on Guero very much, so I don't like the album very much. How's that for reasoning? I honestly don't remember most of the songs on the album except for Missing and Sunday Girl. I thought The Information was a big step up, and would actually rank it my second favorite Beck album. Keep in mind that I really only like three Beck albums though.
Vivian Darkbloom

Liked Guero, The Information less so...

I dunno. I mean, they're lesser albums and all, but there are keepers on both... unsure.gif unsure.gif unsure.gif

yup. i'll go as far as to say guero is a top 3 beck album. can't say i'll find anyone to agree with me but that's everybody else's problem not mine.
Gluehead
I really liked Guero, most of the songs sounded like Beck attempting cheesy 70's psychedelia. It was like a love letter to Kenny Rogers' "What Condition My Condition Is In".
Hans Christian Anderson
can't tell if the post above me is sarcastic or not, but its a funny post nonetheless.

i'm excited to hear the new record. i initially liked guero a lot and wasn't crazy about the information from the get go, but these days i think i prefer the information to guero.

i definitely prefer odelay, sea change and probably MV to the two most recent records though. mutations and guero are currently tied. mutations has always felt the most hit and miss for me personally.
LOL Alzado
MV is probably my least favorite of his major releases. I love Mutations, Sea Change & Odelay. The Informatin is very middle tier, in my opinion. Some good tracks, but the majority of them meld together and few stick out in my mind.

Guero, on the other hand, is full of stand out tracks. Hell Yes, Que Onda Guero, Black Tamborine and Earthquake Weather are all top notch Beck tracks. Earthquake Weather has a chorus that will take you directly to Xenu if listened to under a certain "state" of mind.

p.s. I love how most people, myself included, don't even mention Mellow Gold in this discussion

How about saying it's a good early Ween album. smile.gif "Loser", "Mountain Dew Rock", "Nightmare Hippy Girl"--and "Motherfuker" is really cathartic when I'm really pissed off at someone.

No rumor - It's in the latest Rolling Stone interview with Danger Mouse.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BECK
DANGER MOUSE-PRODUCED NEW ALBUM OUT THIS SUMMER
SEPTEMBER 20 HOLLYWOOD BOWL SHOW WITH SPECIAL GUESTS SPOON & MGMT ON SALE MAY 10th

Beck has recorded a new album, produced with Brian "Danger Mouse"
Burton, to be released this summer. The as yet untitled album contains 10 new songs.

Having met a few years ago, Beck and Danger Mouse had planned to
work together at some point, finally convening last December to do
a few songs. Encouraged by the results, they decided to make an
entire record and over the next few months recorded extensively,
with the goal of using only 10 pieces in the end.

The result is a tightly assembled group of songs that range in
lyrical tone from introspection and social commentary to off the
cuff wordplay and lighthearted humor. Musically, the album's ten
tracks vacillate between economy and experimentation, hybrid and
pop classicism, while consistently manifesting Beck and Danger
Mouse's shared interest in psych-rock, folk, electronic minimalism
and orchestration.

The album's diversity of tone is belied by an emphasis on songwriting and musical concision, with the album clocking in at a little over 30 minutes.

The album represents the first new Beck music since last year's Grammy-nominated digital single "Timebomb." The new songs also mark the first new material Beck has written since the prolific stretch that produced 2005's platinum Guero and 2006's universally acclaimed The Information.

On the live front, Beck will play his biggest hometown headline
show to date September 20 at the Hollywood Bowl. The bill will also
feature special guests Spoon and MGMT and is the first headline
date announced on a U.S. itinerary that so far includes the Austin
City Limits, Outside Lands and Bumbershoot festivals.

Mellow Gold is probably my favorite album of his, and the one that has stood the test of time. His last two albums are so fucking bland and lifeless that it is unbelievable.
yancy
I'm holding out hope for MV2. It's not gonna happen.
chingram
of course everyone likes odelay and MV better, because they were early records, and as
a music snob, you're not allowed to like new releases from artists that have made more than
3 records.

or they just had better songs... smile.gif

i have nothing against Beck or his newer material, but some of it just seems like a rehash unfortunately. probably happens easier with someone like Beck who'sm music has always genre-hopped and never been able to label accurately.

It's all relative. I was a poser to old school Beck fans for not caring about him until Midnight Vultures. Now I'm old school? Okay.

just trying to get some reaction - midnight vultures is actually my favorite beck album.
sea change and odelay battle it out for a close 2nd.

(Sarcasm?)
Not because they were early records (no mention of Stereopathic Soul Manure or One Foot In The Grave, I see, hmph!) but because they were a hell of a lot more fun.

There are some days where I truly believe that "Debra" is his best song.
paramedicfetus
MV is a fun record, but I found it a little too forced and as a result it seems real kitschy. I honestly haven't listened to it probably since it came out though. May need to dust it off, er, double click it again soon.
yancy
I'd just like to add that "10 tracks 30 minutes" makes me more excited about the new Beck record than anything else I could read. More brief pop albums, plz.

Quality in addition to brevity would be nice.

I'm a bigger fan of The Information. It peters out around the 3/4 mark, but it's a good record nonetheless. I'm actually not fond of Guero. Maybe my mind has changed, but I remember railing against it rather earnestly when it came out. Just find most of it dull.

10 tracks at 30 minutes? My heart skips a beat.

Oh, and, for proper stereotyping: I consider Odelay--far and away--his best work. Doubt that's controversial, but...

I think that (over) a decade after its release it is easy to forget exactly how original Odelay was when it came out. If you would have asked me back then which album of his I thought was best I would definitely have said Odelay. However, for some reason I am just super nostalgic for Mellow Gold. I guess I really love me some weirdo rock.

I have high hopes for this, actually. Like Yancy, I got excited by the "10 songs, 30 minutes" thing. The problem with the last two were a lack of cohesion and just too many songs really. I'm a pretty gigantic Beck fan and I don't think I could name every song on Guero and The Information off the top of my head.

i don't think guero had too many songs, but the information certainly did. if it were trimmed about 10 minutes i'd put it up there w/ sea change, MV and odelay. as it stands its about on par w/ mutations (which i also feel is too long) and guero.

i really have never cared for mellow gold aside from a few songs.

wow. the guts of guero are so good. the guts being the 8 song run from missing to farewell ride. ah what the hell, make it a 9 song stretch and throw girl in the mix.
