Full Version: My iPod battery went kaput

I bought an iPod Sept 30. Last night the battery went dead. Now I can send it in for over 60 bucks, plus shipping, or go to an Apple store. There they can probably fix it. To the someone who said to not get an iPod: You were right. I wish I had gone with something else.

That really sucks. Hope you get everything cleared up/fixed/replaced. For all I've read about iPod batterys crapping out on people, I'm surprised that my second generation 20 gig iPod that I've had for about 3 and a half years now still works as well as it does, especially after I had left it plugged in for about three months straight.

I bought my first iPod last February and sold it to Derek (Hewletts Daughter) in the fall. I believe it's still working fine for him.

I got the 60GB iPod video when it was released in the fall, along with a two-year AppleCare plan. It's been great so far.

Ironically enough, I wound up selling it to my sister for a fraction of what I bought it for, and it's working wonderfully for her. She treats the thing like shit, too, so yeah, good buy. But I wound up getting the 60 gig video ipod as well and it works really well. No complaints from this end of the ipod community.

When you say dead, do you mean it won't power your iPod at all or does it have a really short charge?

I had an iPod that developed some 'memory,' possibly from keeping it connected to my computer and using it like a hard drive for music, and it got to the point where it would only play for 5 minutes before shutting off.

I had to completely discharge and recharge my iPod a few times, but that's all it took to get it back up to a few hours, and a few more to get it back to normal.

guy I work with has one of these- a little bigger than the ipod, but it's cool as hell...

Haha, excellent. Did you get a good case for your iPod? Those scratch up so easily... I bought an aluminum case at first, but have since moved onto the Agent 18 hard plastic case. It's amazing.

For the first three months or so, I had no case and used the shitty slipsleeve it came with. But when we were in Minnesota, I was in Urban Outfitters and saw a case on sale for 10 bucks, so I grabbed it. It then wound up ringing up for three bucks, and definitely turned out to be a great steal.

Yeah, that's the case I got. Good stuff. But mine is still scratched up to high hell. I need to get some cleaning stuff for it or something.

Check out ilounge.com. I know there's a couple of solution kits you can get that'll remove the scratches.

Also, if you're interested in a hard case, I still have that aluminum one I'd be willing to part with. I'm not using it.

My ipod told me that it was going to play everything backwards until I removed Art Brut from it's musical directory.

I got the nano for my birthday, I hate it. It only plays for like 1.5 hours and dies.
My old motorola m500 played forever and a day.
I think I'm gonna give that Archos Gmini a try thanks Sin.

I hear and have read that it is pretty easy to replace the ipod battery yourself with some simple instructions online.

I know a Sombie named --Blank-- has done it before and can attest to how easy it was and can forward you instructions. Just send him a note.

Its a common problem for certain ipods.

I have the agent 18 case. It's clear and small but the case is scratched to hell so in order to watch the pod I need to take it out of the case. I have the 30 gb video. No problems with battery yet. I tried a leather case and that was actually scratching my ipod. I got that frickin' invisible shield and that is damn near impossible to get on without bubbles so I took that off. I'm frustrated with how easy the pod scratches. I have had it for less than two months and love it other than the scratching. I have treated it like a billion dollar diamond and it's still got scratches.

I'm going to start an earbud thread. Those things are useless.

I think both sets of iPod earbuds I've had have been at least somewhat defective. At least the second pair. And also a pair that came with an iRiver player I bought a couple years ago. I can't stand the buggers, anyway.

my original one crapped out on me when i had a day left on the warranty. my replacement one crapped out about 2 weeks ago (didn't even have it for 2 months) but I won't be able to make it to an apple store until there's only one day left on that warranty (replacement units are only covered for 90 days).

i'm seriously questioning whether or not i want another one of these things or not. i mean, they're a crappily made product that just further contribute to our seemingly endless global wastestream. i didn't even beat mine up. i'm gonna bitch and moan asking the apple people for cash, and while i know it'll never happen, even if they offer me like 50 bucks i'd take it over a new ipod. 50 bucks can buy a lot of used cds smile.gif.

however it helped me get A LOT of music listening done dry.gif

I made an appointment at the Apple store, but I think I'd rather try to fix myself. Now I was just at their site and it said it may not be the battery. That is may need to be reset. I was at the Best Buy site. There is a battery pack that says it's compatible with iPod's. It says to attach to the back. Does anyone know if this is good?
Andyroo
Did you try doing a factory reset? Do that before you spend any money or try to exchange. The software should be on your computer already, just make sure you get the newest version.

I've had to reset my iPod a couple times. The iPod video had a nasty bug that made it impossible to turn off, but I believe it was addressed in one of the latest fixes.

I'm going to try that when I get home. Thanks. I hate to have to go to the store if I don't need to. I would have to take two buses, then walk a few blocks. Kind of a pain if I don't have to.

And Creative doesn't make the little ones anymore. You can pick 'em up cheap (I got mine for free for joining Audible.com).

Try the reset but really, anything else you do will void the warranty so it's best to take it back to the Apple store if the reset doesn't work.

I've had mine for 3.8 years and it's still working fine (knock on wood...).

My 60gb video works good. Since the purchase, I have been slowly getting rid of my entire cd collection. If anything happened to mine, I would definitely get another one.
Smells Like Douche
Thanks for the reset information. I did the reset and now it works just fine. Thank you. I saved myself 60 dollars and a trip to the Apple store.
