The results will be posted randomly (yet in a timely fashion, wiseasses) over the next three weeks, with two rounds being done each week. The judges' decisions, while often of dubious quality, are final. (An impartial 3rd party will be enlisted to post results in the matchup(s) in which I am a participant.)

Post well. Post wisely. Post away.
Best of luck to all.

The Pink Floyd Region Play-In Game: norton vs. crease

QUOTE(norton @ Mar 13 2006, 08:45 AM)

I only heard about 20 seconds of the Pulp song from the iTunes sample -- is it just me, or does it sound like the beginning of MacArthur Park?

I don't think I like either very much.

QUOTE(crease @ Mar 9 2006, 03:43 PM)

laugh.gif

norton flirts with elimination, flaunting a casual disregard for giving a song a chance--just 20 seconds? However, crease's lack of defense gets exposed with a lone smiley, offered for a dubious doppelganger stovich lesson on elevator etiquette.

norton plays his way into the matchup with The Goliath Dr Bill, defeating crease in a laugher.

What the fuck is going on in here. i don't remember entering this, why is everyone always trying to nibble on my balls.

"There can be only one?" I established myself as the one when I watched all four highlander movies back to back and felt the motherfucking quickening while i sat there in my underpants, this tourney is useless, game over man, game over.

I still cry when The Kurgan kills Sean Connery though, asshole.

Sufjan Stevens Region Round 1: 6. velocity vs. 11. izzy

QUOTE(velocity @ Mar 13 2006, 02:51 PM)

Saw them open for Funkadelic last year @ the Fillmore. They were pretty damn great (until Funkadelic blew them out of the water).

QUOTE(izzy @ Mar 11 2006, 02:39 PM)

It reminds me of that old Qwest commericial..."Every album ever made, (or leaked!) anywhere anytime... and I am sure someone would still have something to say about some issue or other... I am working on some YSI goodness for next week.

rolleyes.gif

velocity opens strong, combining some George Clinton love with some venue name-dropping. The Fillmore, eh? izzy also looks tourney-ready, and manages to chime in on the raging YSI debates with a decent smattering of optimism that hardly ever informs the debate.

velocity trips up at the end, however, with an attempt at hyperbole that backfires. George Clinton and the P-Funk All-stars blown out of the water by Funkadelic? I'll admit Clinton is a bit conflicted, but still...

And then, to seal the deal, izzy does the near-impossible: actually contributes a new thought to the YSI thang, with some wry sarcasm. Izzy hangs on for the win.

QUOTE(Smells Like Douche @ Mar 13 2006, 08:49 AM)

I bought an iPod Sept 30. Last night the battery went dead. Now I can send it in for over 60 bucks, plus shipping, or go to an Apple store. There they can probably fix it. To the someone who said to not get an iPod: You were right. I wish I had gone with something else.

Sometimes a powerhouse works in mysterious ways. A cursory glance at the two teams' performances doesn't indicate much of a difference; but cursory glances can be deceiving. (They are recommended, however, for the Smells Like Douche cheerleaders, who are homely in the extreme.) SLD's iPod troubles are extremely similar to many other iPod troubles we've heard around here (and quite frankly, everywhere else) before. SLD shows a lack of offensive tenacity, seemingly afraid to go to the hole, or at least the Apple Store.

solace, however, pulls off an unlikely triple-double. In one post, he manages to laugh at himself for his Pearl Jam mania, while poking fun at a few others who share it, while also making fun of Pearl Jam for one of their typical Pearl Jam-ian affectations. A strong showing from a strong team.

Maybe this is kind of a stretch for this thread. It's not traditional ambient music in any way, definitely no in the classic Eno/Aphex Twin vein, anyway. It's pretty much just all solo percussion with limited electronics on some of the tracks, sometimes very minimal in a way that reminds me of Stars of the Lid (don't know if it will do the same for anyone else, though). I think/hope that a few people who dig most of the other stuff in this thread will enjoy it... probably more than most Wilco fans are going to, inevitably.

i don't think hewlett or i are saying (and i don't want to speak for hewlett, but it seems we have similar tastes) that cross DOES it better, it's just that cross has better material. at least that's my opinion. if you listen to the oswalt album it's definitely not bad by any stretch; it's just not as good as david cross's stuff which it's very easy to relate it to.

undo, having backed into the tournament with a relatively low #7 seed, mans up for a tough first-round matchup and comes out firing. BennyHillsBalls respond (I'm not sure if that means they descend) with a little support for a friend's bonehead statement. (In this case, Hewlett's Daughter's assertion that Patton Oswalt cribs material from David Cross.) Like Guido The Killer Pimp, Patton wouldn't be a SOMB-household name if he didn't respect the "don't fuck with another man's livelihood" rule that governs comedians. BHB's defense is strong, but it's against a team that's not on the floor.

undo, in the meantime, puts on a display, basically raining 3's with a YSI of an unexpected title for the ambient faithful.

QUOTE(Phil @ Mar 13 2006, 09:55 PM)

just a warning to all things that are thinking about leaking:
i'm now on spring break, and on dial-up.
So please dear god, (and I am talking to you The Streets) do not fucking leak now.

Look, we all heard Vitale say it on Sunday: there's no way skinnyhipsrivers should have been given a #2 seed. Usually when a team gets disrespected like that, they take it out on their first round opponent. Usually.

Phil, however, didn't get that memo. While their fellow students are off doing beer bongs, Phil's team is here in the tourney during Spring Break, showing the kind of dedication that wins ball games. In a crowd-pleasing flourish, he drops a lower-case "god" in the same sentence with the f-bomb. Nicely.

skinnyhipsrivers, in the end, promises fireworks but fails to deliver any, leading to a massive first-round upset.

But Tony's strategy backfires when all five starters receive double technical fouls in the first minute of play. NumberTenOx successfully bricks nine free throws, but accidentally makes the last one.

Asked about the technicals after the game, the refs would only reply, "there's gallows humor, and then there's really, really bad gallows humor."

Some of those are nasty. The Moroder one is aite.

QUOTE(Paul @ Mar 14 2006, 12:35 AM)

I'm not exactly a "music of you snob" but you could say a similar thing about last year's show: "I can't believe so many of you are excited about an event that is featuring Weezer and Widespread Panic," but the lineup filled up nicely with a wide range of "alternative" and "indie" acts where most people on this board probably didn't even care about the headliners at that point.

And this is a big music festival in Chicago, a city that until a year or two ago seemed to hate rock music like Yosamite Sam hates Bugs Bunny. (Just so you know, my other choices for that simile were "like John Lithgow hated dancing in Footloose" or "like Hitler hated Jews." I think I made the right choice)

In the tourney, decision-making is everything. All the effort in the world won't save you if you keep turning the ball over.

deej is efficient with the ball, showing some suspect street skills (and engendering some unfortunate alliteration.) Despite the atrocious (even for his characters) spelling of "aite", he's on the money with the assessement of SomeGirl's sneaky link.

Paul, on the other hand, just can't seem to get the handle on the rock. It all goes to hell in a handbasket in a hurry: an inadvertent bit of yancy-baiting, air quotes on alternative and indie, the misspelling of Yosemite, and fully three attempts at a joke to support the claim that Chicago hated rock. Point guards win games, and Paul fielded five swing men. Vaya con Hitler.

Glad to participate. I have seen hundreds of 50's and 60's films, so that would be my shining point (kind of like the music poll I did for 1950-1964), but I have seen some quality 30's and 40's films as well.

Val Lewton is really known for the Cat People stuff, has anyone else seen either Bedlam or Body Snatchers? Both are mind-blowingly good Lewton flicks, both with masterful Boris Karloff performances, and Donald Plesance's best role, IMHO.

Both teams come out running the triangle movie-reference offense. However, TKB's squad have clearly had more practice, because everyone knows that any Nora Ephron reference, perhaps even a sarcastic one, will lead to a first-round exit.
