Doctor Who on Sci-Fi...beginning Friday night

Alright, people. I don't do this sort of thing, like, ever, but this is a great show.

Finally, one year after its debut in the UK and Canada, us Yanks can finally see the new Doctor Who series. If you ever watched the original, or even if you didn't like it because of the effects, crappy looking monsters, rock quarry sets, etc., give this a shot. Its really great.

I've already seen the series thanks to Bit Torrent, but I'll definitely DVR this and give it another watch-through.

Ask our British and Canadian friends. They know.
Mitchell
Best show on TV last year. No question. I'm already bracing myself for the the return of DT and the next lot.
Diesel
I hope the ratings do well on Sci-Fi so they can pick up the second series hopefully right after it airs in the UK (hopefully it should be starting up again soon). So far they've just committed to the Eccleston episodes. I'd like to NOT have to Bit Torrent this again, if possible. I only did the first time because it was the only way to see it.
Tony
Maybe if the ratings are really good they'll get the rights to air the original. I guess the BBC raised the price to some exorbitant rate years ago. That's why PBS stations in America have mostly stopped carrying it.

I remember a guy in my dorm in college used to watch Dr. Who. He raved about it. I could never understand the appeal. Always seemed really stupid to me.
The Good Dr Bill
do they keep the old theme song?
Mitchell
15 April 2006 looks like the likely date for series 28. Not confirmed though.

It's the polar opposite of American SF. Humorous, silly but incoporating some of the best ideas Science fiction has ever had without hitting you over the head with it.

Revamped version. Better than the horrid 80's one, not as good as the orginal. Sounds better with the graphics.

If you thought any of the 70's output was stupid. Don't worry, it's nothing like that now.

Different arrangement, but yeah, basically. (On the old show, the theme had several different arrangements/different instrumentation, etc., but basically remained familiar. Same here.)

And, yeah, the old show TOTALLY looked crappy, seemed silly, etc. If you had that reaction, then you should absolutely give the new one a try. Its completely updated, has a budget, etc., yet retains the humor, ideas, etc. of the original.

And I think Sci Fi's deal is ONLY for the new. The BBC tried to tie the original/new series rights together, and that might have been why it took a fucking YEAR to come stateside.

(And...its only Series 28 if you factor in the 1963-1989 run. Considering the show was off the air for 15-plus years, its easier to consider the upcoming season Season Two of a new series. Also, the first 26 seasons were in the serialized format...the new series isn't...so I really think you can consider this a new series in many respects, though with the obvious ties to the original, such as K-9 and Sarah Jane Smith returning next season. But this is really "Doctor Who Volume 2" in many ways.)

Hoping this will fill the Battlestar Galactica void till October.

I was going to post this! I know what I'm doing Friday night, and I'm going to try to tape it, too. This, along with the Hayao Miyazaki movies being shown on Cartoon Network on Saturday Nights, is going to kill my weekends. laugh.gif

AMC did this in January but I failed to put in a blank, glad I have a second chance.

Spirited Away this weekend (which is also being shown on TCM next Saturday), Princess Mononoke on March 25th, Castle in the Sky on April 1st, and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind on April 8th. All showings are at 7:30 PM EST.

What is it with SciFi, and many other cable channels, that when they get any new episodes of a show they show multiple episodes all at once, and then immediately show them again? SciFi's claiming they have a "Two Hour Premier" of the show, but what they're doing is showing 2 episodes, "Rose" & "The End of the World," twice to take up 2 hours. rolleyes.gif

Diesel
Well, they're two one-hour (with commercials) episodes, so I guess its a "two-hour premiere" of sorts. Sci-Fi actually drives me nuts with their constant commercial breaks...I'm actually impressed that they will ONLY be running 15 minutes of ads!

And...all the episodes are really good, but keep an eye out in particular for "Dalek," (Episode 6) and "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" (Episodes 9 & 10), my personal favorites, and probably the fan consensus favorites. "The Unquiet Dead" (Episode 3) is probably the most "traditionally Doctor Who-esque" of the lot (with a setting and plotline and aura not unlike the mid-70s Tom Baker era, only with better effects, of course), for those old-school fans who see the first two and wonder just what show it is they're watching!

Have you bought any of those ridiculously expensive DVD editions of the old series? The extras are quite good though. Commentaries on all of them. I'm waiting for Inferno. Maybe the best Dr Who story of all time.

Genesis of The Daleks is out here next month. I still think it's the best one ever.

Only "The Caves Of Androzani," because I had it signed at a convention. (Yes...I went to a convention. I'll say it before anyone: DORK!!!) The prices tend to dissaude me from buying too many...it bugs me that most of the BBC stuff released in the states on DVD tend to be so expensive. I've been finding some eps online, too.

Yeah..."Inferno" is a classic. Probably Pertwee's best story by a wide margin...though "Terror of the Autons" (the title villains, though not named, are the main villain in "Rose," the first ep of the new series) and "Day of the Daleks" are right up there in my book, too.

I've been a Who fan for years upon years now, hence my excitement over the new series. Actually, its because of the new series that I've been revisiting the old quite a bit, too.
Tony
I have Androzani as well. It's a male bloodbath. All the male characters die including the Doctor. I'm one of the few who really liked Trial of a Timelord as well.

Yeah, it's 2 one hour episodes, then the same 2 one hour episodes played immediately afterwards, then the same 2 one hour episodes play on Sunday, then again on Monday Morning, then again late on Thursday Evening. Then on Friday the 24th they're showing "The Unquiet Dead," three times! And the same repeat schedule's used again the rest of the week.

Then in October when they have new episodes of "Cattlecar Collapsica" they'll show three new episodes one right after the other and go into repeats for a month!

And...interesting Who-related rumor still unconfirmed by the BBC:

Word in a tabloid was there's a possibility of a SECOND spin-off show this year ... which would actually be a revival of the very FIRST spin-off attempt: A K-9 and Sarah Jane Smith show. Remember "K-9 And Company?" Can't blame you if you don't. Would certainly be interesting to check out, if done well. The actress who plays Sarah's in her late 50s now, but is actually still pretty attractive.

The other spin-off, "Torchwood," is in production for sure, and revolves around Captain Jack, the late-season bisexual companion from Season 1. Of course, he was left in a rather precarious position at the end of the season, so I'm wondering how they'd bring him back to the present day, but no spoilers.

Yeah, not bad for 58.

I'm not sure if they're saying they're redoing "K9 & Company", I think Sarah & K9 are coming back to the series (maybe for a "the N Doctors" Episode?). From bbc.co.uk:
QUOTE
Today David Tennant, the Tenth Time Lord, will be reunited with two of his favourite and most iconic companions - Sarah Jane Smith and the faithful robot dog, K9.

K9, who was the loyal friend to Tom Baker's Doctor between 1977 and 1981, joins Sarah Jane Smith, the Doctor, Rose and Mickey in a fight against the evil Krillitanes.

John Leeson, the voice of K9, says: "I am delighted to have been invited back on board the series - and a little gathered rust is no object to a fully functional K9!"

Producer Phil Collinson adds: "It is great to be welcoming K9 back to Doctor Who.

"A whole generation fondly remember him as an ever-faithful companion and best friend to Tom Baker's Doctor.

"I hope the new generation of viewers will fall in love with him in the same way. I'm sure he's going to prove an invaluable help to the Doctor in the fight against intergalactic evil."

Elisabeth Sladen says of reviving Sarah Jane: "I am so thrilled to be back and I feel so empowered by the affection that [the whole team] have for Sarah Jane Smith and for the programme.

"Toby Whithouse's script is wonderful - it's an absolutely truthful progression of Sarah.

"I just hope I can live up to their expectation, and I hope I can still run as fast after 30 years!"

The episode, which will be seen next spring in the eagerly-awaited second series, sees the team investigate sinister events at a modern-day comprehensive school, and also stars Anthony Head (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Little Britain).

Notes to Editors

List of K9 Facts

K9 travelled with Tom Baker, joining in 1977 and leaving in 1981.

There have been three K9s.

K9 Mark 1 was designed as a robotic pet by a Professor Marius, who left him to the Doctor. The Doctor gave him to his companion Leela when she left him to join the Time Lords.

K9 Mark 2 was built by the Doctor himself. He gave him to his companion Romana when she decided to travel by herself.

K9 Mark 3 was built as a gift for his old companion Sarah Jane.

Original K9 was swiftly replaced by the production team as his motor was too noisy and his remote controls were on the same frequency as the studio cameras.

Sarah Jane and K9 appeared together in the one-off K9 & Co (1981) and the anniversary special The Five Doctors (1983).

Diesel
Sarah and K-9 are definitely doing an episode this season (but not a Doctor-reunion one). The rumor is a spinoff BEYOND the episode. And there are better pics I've seen of Sladen these days. Not exactly "hot," per se, but not what Diana Rigg ended up looking like, either. I'm sure they'd probably add another younger woman to the cast for the traditional Doctor Who-type eye candy, but she's not horrible looking, either. Held up better than Louise Jameson (Leela) or Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), certainly.

Linky.

Sladen signing a Dalek:

Jameson recently. Yes, once upon a time, she was the most lusted-after Who companion in the series' history. Probably because of those outfits.

IPB Image

Sutton fared even worse. She was practically unrecognizable in "Dimensions in Time," the 1993 charity special.

And, yes, it IS somewhat sexist to be comparing notes on the fates of Who girls, but its still kinda interesting. And no male who ever watched Doctor Who DIDN'T notice the girls, for God's sake.

I knew Tennant signed on for a third series. Rumors were that Piper was leaving, though, but its good that she's staying. As for the kiss, its shown in the previews after "The Christmas Invasion" (God bless you, Bittorrent!). And I was anticipating some Rose/Sarah Jane tension ... Rose has gotta view Sarah Jane almost as an "ex-girlfriend," even though we know the Doctor/Sarah relationship was totally platonic.

The Sci-Fi ratings for the Eccleston episodes are apparently doing very well, with something like 1.8 million viewers a week (nothing to sneeze at in U.S. cable land, especially with Sci-Fi not being a basic cable channel anymore). Not "Battlestar Galactica" good, but better than practically everything else on the network barring miniseries and other premiere episodes. A little surprising considering the true geeks like me saw those last year through the Net ...but we're still watching, I guess.

Hopefully, this bodes well for SciFi to pick up Series Two shortly after its U.K. debut. SciFi's still pretty early into the series, with "Aliens of London" running this week, so maybe, just maybe, they can run the Tennant episodes immediately after they finish the Eccleston shows in June. I can only hope.

I just hope the BBC doesn't overexpose the series, what with one confirmed spinoff ("Torchwood"), two tie-in series ("Confidential" and a children's focused show) and a rumored second spinoff (The K-9/Sarah Jane series referenced earlier and first attempted 25 years ago!).

That's coming out in America in June or so. Cool deal. I want Inferno damn it.
Mitchell
I'm thinking I shouldn't really pick up to many of the older ones as they'll eventually be available to download (in the UK) from the BBC's website. (see my thread on UK TV.)
Diesel
Yeah, I've have to pick that up when the U.S. version hits. I think I'm close to wearing out my VHS two-tape set of "The Sontaran Experiment"/"Genesis of the Daleks" from years back.

Does Tom Baker do the commentary on the DVD? I know he's done a few tracks, but not too many. He's mostly distanced himself from the show, only doing sporadic interviews and like no public appearances. I'm guessing the director and Elizabeth Sladen probably do the commentary (I can't wait for the Sladen/K9 return ep this week, BTW!), as Ian Marter (Harry) and Terry Nation are long dead.

I did pick up "The Beginning" boxed set. Haven't watched the whole thing yet, but its really good, too.
Tony
Don't look for Baker to do a commentary with Jameson as they couldn't stand each other.

Well, and Lalla Ward's his ex-wife, so that leaves Sladen, who I believe is the only person he's done tracks with! This explains a few things, at least.

Scratch that: "The Ribos Operation" and "The Androids of Tara" have Baker and Mary Tamm. Baker and John Leeson (K-9) do "The Power of Kroll." (Baker and Sladen do "The Ark In Space." Beyond those four releases, I don't think Baker's done any commentaries for his other stories.)

I sometimes forget about Tamm, because she was only on one season as Romana.

And while we're on the topic, the commentary track on "The Caves of Androzani," with Peter Davison, Nicola Bryant (Peri) and director Graeme Harper (who I believe is also directing a few eps of the current series, making him one of the few people to work on both series) is really hysterical. They even point out many of the silly errors and other things in the production, and several jokes about Bryant's cleavage are made.

Jameson did a commentary on 'Horror Of Fang Rock' and basically said Baker was a bully who would 'improvise' during a scene by stepping in between her and the camera. I wonder what Nicola Bryant looks like these days. Best Looking Who girl ever.

I am. I just got "The Girl In The Fireplace" in. Will watch later, after I burn the avi file to a CD and put it in my DVD player that fortunately plays video files so I can actually watch it on my TV.

The episodes typically end up in Bit Torrent by about 10 p.m. Central time Saturday in the U.S., so I'm only like a day behind the Brits in seeing them, fortunately. (Sci Fi this week showed "The Empty Child," speaking of Moffat. Yes, I'm watching Series One AGAIN at the same time as getting Series Two.)

"School Reunion" almost made me cry. What a great, great, touching episode.

And, Gareth, what think you of Christopher Eccleston as "The Prisoner?" That should be really good.

The Prisoner being remade is a bit wrong but as they are doing it Eccleston is as good as any to do it. Hope it's not awful.

I am totally stoked for this week's episode. The Cybermen of old often struck me as being rather clumsy and they had that ridiculous allergy to gold, though in some stories such as "Earthshock" and "The Invasion" (referenced in "The Rise of the Cybermen" through the "International Electromatics" name on the van abducting the homeless people) they were very effective. This new version, though ... downright chilling. I thought the pacing was a little slower than normal, yet understandable considering the two-part format. As an old-school fan, it didn't bother me at all (as the classic series was often even more slower paced), but it could be jarring to those expecting wall-to-wall action and thrills. Instead, we get a lot of (effective) setup for what should be an action packed finale. And I was curious as to how the new series would do a "parallel Earth" story, considering the last Doctor Who parallel Earth tale, "Inferno," was one of the best ever stories. Fortunately, they didn't fall into the trap of "evil versions of main characters" that even "Inferno" did (the Brigidier with an eyepatch!). They even joked about it ... "Rose" is a dog, "Mickey" is "Ricky" (a joke Eccleston did in Series One), "Pete" is alive and successful ... and "Jackie" is still annoying, if rich now.

Only three episodes left in the U.S. broadcast. No word of whether they're picking up Series Two, but the ratings are holding at an average 1.5 million a week ... not bad for a Friday night slot on a U.S. Cable network.

Holy fuck is right. "Doomsday" is bound to be incredible. I can't wait. That cliffhanger? SHIT. I kinda saw it coming, but to actually SEE it ... and to consider the implications ... FUUUUUUUUUCK. It's like a Who fan's dream come true ... and as good an argument as any for why this show NEEDS an effects budget, because I'm sure the original writers thought about doing this, but couldn't possibly have the resources to do so effectively. And I understand the NEXT episode will ALSO end on a huge cliffhanger as well for the entire season.
Sideswiped
Probably leave off with how this one started. Tennat gets the giggle out in me and makes some of the weaker performances a slight more tolerable. Speaking of, I hope Micky isn't as limp as episodes 5&6.

BTW I might or might not have a void which might or might not have the last 2 seasons, minus the x-mas special. I could send one out after next sun, if there is some interest. Might have to upgrade my comp for a dvd drive, my last one crapped out a month ago.

BTW this ?
Diesel
"The Invasion" is great. Probably the best Cyberman story ever ... though "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday" could very well top it! I have the VHS release, with Nicholas Courtney doing bridging narration.
Diesel
Yeah, she was the top rumor.

First black female companion in series history, too. Jigga would be proud. (Yes, I guess Mickey would be the first black companion, period, but he wasn't really travelling in the TARDIS that long.)

So will the next Christmas episode be the first companion-less episode since "The Deadly Assassin," and hence only the second companion-less story in history? Or is Captain Jack returning at that point (depending on the outcome of "Torchwood" the series)?

And I'll miss Piper and everything, but two years as a companion is about right. Only a handful lasted longer (Liz Sladen, obviously ... chronologically the longest running at three and a half years; Katy Manning (Jo Grant) was on for three, and Janet Fielding (Tegan) was pretty close to three. The rest? One to two years.)
