I don’t start threads very often but I felt the need to attempt to elevate this above the “some electronic shit bruegel posted” status for which it is probably destined.

When Helmet alerted me to its existence a few weeks back I sort it out on ‘Helmet recs good shit’ grounds rather than any Black Dog devotion. Sure, I dug me some Spanners back in the day but I hadn’t listened to any Black Dog for years, so I didn’t go in with sky-high expectations……ffwd a month and its got my shit impounded.

This is some subtly powerful ambient techno with the emphasis on sub. The number stations/EVP/haunted radio theme means it works really well as a headphones album but get it on a good system and the bass will liquefy your guts…..

I love this quote from Ken Downie on Resident Advisor: "the bass is much heavier - so much so that it was making us ill working with the low frequencies for hours on end. We could only do three hours at a time on some parts."

Talk aboute suffering for your art.....they are probably infertile now.

Tiny Mix Tapes Review

I know Avecs already on board but I’m sure there are a few more sombies who would love this.

Yeah this is great. A real smooth listen. Reminds me of Plastikman in it's minimal construction (one simple kick machine and a couple padded leads).

Anyone who likes bare bones electronic that goes places, this is for you.

Yep, good shit here. I haven't been keeping up with much electronic stuff lately, but this and the Syclops album have been ruling my world the last few days.

I got excited for a second and thought that Black Dog had reformed with Handley and Turner (Plaid). I didn't realize that Ken Downie + The Dust Bros. were now The Black Dog. I'll check it out.

This reminds that I still need to d/l Plaid's soundtrack to Tekkonkinkreet.
Vivian Darkbloom

Vivian stamps approval. Look for it in the "Now Playing: The Stoned Edition" in the weeks to come.

I'm glad I let Avec and Breugel convince me (not that it took much) to download this the other day. I'm in love with it. So many great tracks. I'm actually listening to "Digital Poacher" as I type this. Such a light pretty song.

This has strong Toytronic feel to it it innit.

This is amazing. I'm trying to find a link to Bytes and Spanners and failing. I'm really surprised at the high quality on this thing. I was starting to become really tired of all the other standard electronic music put out this year (Matmos, and that pretty standard/mediocre Clark album). It's nice to hear somebody focusing on melody, rhythm, and detail for once. The return to general midi sounding synths adds something very special to this.
shame cock
I thought I would post this, seeing as that it's a related project and that it's fantastic. Any fans of Radio Scarecrow might like this.

Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork

On the surface, Plaid's second full-length charts similar territory as their debut, with the same intriguing mix of old-school flow and electronic programming clout, plus an odd tendency to play with certain synth presets -- steel drums, for instance -- that would make most electronica technicians cringe. True, there's a bit more hip-hop flavor on this one, like the faux turntablism on the excellent tracks "Shackbu" and "Little People." And the novelty angle Plaid have occasionally nodded to in the past is out on two tracks especially: the vocoderized bossa-nova number "New Bass Hippo" and "Dang Spot," the kind of popcorn electronica that harks back to Perrey & Kingsley. When it comes down to it, the technical differences between Rest Proof Clockwork and Plaid's debut Not for Threes are minimal. Still, there's a certain soul to this album that displays the maturing ex-breakdancers progressing even after more than ten years of recording. In fact, two of the most beautiful tracks of Plaid's long career are right here. The first is "Buddy," a yearning downtempo track with echoing effects; the second is "Dead Sea," a beatless piece of glorious synth-strings which evoke past civilization just as achingly as "The Crete That Crete Made" (from Temple of Transparent Balls, the 1993 album by Handley and Turner's former concern, the Black Dog). So, in sum, Rest Proof Clockwork is yet another production masterpiece to file on the shelf with the rest of Plaid's work. The element that puts them far, far ahead of every other beatminer out there is a growing sense of spirit that lets the machines do the singing.

I really wanted to love this but out of what I've heard from Black Dog/Plaid, this seems to fall in the middle of all their work. At least after 2 listens.

What does the board think of "Virtual"? There are days I think it's even more essential than Orbital's "Chime" or 808 State's "Pacific".

QUOTE
The Black Dog pay tribute to Detroit with an Underground Resistance mix.

If you have any chance of moving forward, you must know where you've been. So goes the thought behind The Black Dog's nascent mix series, in which this Underground Resistance podcast is the second. Earlier last month, the Sheffield trio celebrated the work of minimal master Robert Hood, who recently returned the favor by remixing the group's "Train by the Autobahn."

As a group that has relentlessly looked forward, the dogs have earned the right to look back a little bit—in the late '80s and early '90s, their sound was most decidedly the future and still is, as Soma's recent re-release of their early work, Book of Dogma, and 2008 album Radio Scarecrow has so aptly proved. This mix and—presumably the ones that will follow—are celebrations of influence and a timely reminder that Underground Resistance still have few peers when it comes to blistering techno and hitech jazz. You can learn even more about the interstellar fugitives here.

What have you been working on recently?

We are due to remix a few tracks for Robert Hood shortly, there's also a Phil Oakey remix that's waiting for the full treatment. Work has already started on the new album, a live art/installation project with another collective and the soundtrack to 20 minute animation. We'll have the best studio tan ever at the start of 2009. We've been gigging 3 or 4 times a month to support the Radio Scarecrow release. We haven't really stopped this year and it feels good to be creative, out there meeting people and just about making the rent!

Where and how was the mix recorded?

The mix was recorded in our Sheffield studio over a period of two weeks, with each of us adding, mixing and making new edits as we went, we then jammed it across 3 laptops and recording it into Soundforge to get the final mix, it took so long as we all tried to get our favourite tracks in. It was difficult to do the track-listing as so many of the tracks are cut up and different parts are used to create new edits but the order is as close as we could get it and it was important to us to do UR justice.

Tell us about UR and the inspiration for the mix?

UR have been an influence on us in more ways than one, we've always shared a musical passion with Detroit but rather than just copying the "template" we've always tried to put our own take on the sound and send it back as a signal. UR are always changing and aren't afraid to make their moves on their own terms and bring new talent through, for that alone they'll always have us there.

In recent times when things have been getting us down (it rains a lot in Sheffield and the skies are always grey) we'd play the interview that Mad Mike did WDET radio and that would bring us back around because it was intelligent, humble and honest. We recently got a chance to meet Mike to say thanks and he was just everything we thought he would be and you can't really ask for more. We also share his view that techno is about the music, not what we look like, not what we wear and certainly not anything to do with many of the rockisms that DJs/Bands often get caught up in, fuck that!

How would you say your sound has changed from your earliest days to
your most recent work?

We've never stood still, making the same sound we made in 1992 would be pointless, as great as the Ramones were, doing that for the rest of your creative life holds no interest to any of us. We move with the times, our feelings and try to reflect that back in our music – we pour everything in.

Detroit vs. Sheffield: Who wins?

We kind figure that it's 2-2 at the moment, both have their own ways and difference should be celebrated we believe, who knows when Robert Hood gets the tracks to us, maybe we'll make it 3-2 to Sheffield [laughs].

What are you up to next?

We'll continue to support Radio Scarecrow with more gigs and then we hit the studio hard to work on the projects mentioned above, 2009 is going to be an even more productive year for The Black Dog.

Thursday, 15th January 2009 The Black Dog announce new album
The Black Dog are without a doubt one of the hardest working acts in electronic music. No sooner have they released one of 2008’s best albums in Radio Scarecrow and the massive 12” Detroit vs Sheffield which featured 2 remixes from Detroit minimal grandmaster Robert Hood, they now prepare for their next album release, ready to drop on April 9th this year.

Further Vexations is a real successor to Radio Scarecrow. The thinking behind the predecessor is still very evident and with even more bite, but there’s something about Further Vexations that lends itself to the dark club atmosphere. Perhaps the recent bout of constant gigging has had its effect on the act because this one is going to be tearing up floors around the world on its release. The power of these clubbier tracks is perfectly balanced with the sort of sublime downtempo electronica that only The Black Dog do best. Further Vexations might have taken half the time to create but still manages to maintain the same degree of meticulous detail and attention as its predecessor, and, again like Radio Scarecrow, is a complete package of tracks demanding to be listened to from start to finish.

Behind the album is a dark cynicism of the Orwellian practices being carried out by the Government and the passivity of the general public at large to let this happen. Martin Dust from tBd explains, “Our main concern was and still is the amount of personal freedoms being surrendered under the banner of "for your own safety" – CCTV, Biometrics and the World Wide Databases being the latest inventions to save us for ourselves. What is it going to take for people to wake up? How much further can the people that we’ve put into power go before something finally snaps? We've had enough now! We believe that people have become lazy and accepting of "beige" political parties who have realised if they stand for nothing, people will fall for anything.”

Further Vexations looks to rouse the sort of political attitudes that have been sorely missing from electronic music since rave’s backlash against the Criminal Justice Act in the 90’s. Martin continues, “It was these feelings coupled with visiting many different cities, playing lots of clubs and festivals, that has resulted in a pick up in pace and aggression reflexed in the tracks on Further Vexations - these are our Vexations reflecting back.”

Definitely looking forward to this.

Any thoughts about their earliest records? Obviously, Bytes is a classic. The only album of theirs that I actually own is Temple of Transparent Balls, which kind of sucks. Spanners is a good return, one of the essential IDM (no one likes using that term anymore but that's still what it is) longplayers of the 90s, and it's got "Utopian Dream," which is one of my favorite tracks from them.

That cover is fucking brilliant. I got a couple of oldies-but-goodies on vinyl recently, both with schmart artwork. In the mode and Our aim is to satisfy Red Snapper. Made me long for that era, even though there's nothing thematically tying them together. Other than the fact that they're both covers of dark extension-of-DnB albums from 2000. Sometimes that's enough. I dunno, turn of decade holds a special charm for me.

Further vexations, on top of its excellent moniker, brings some absolute quality. Something to look at and lose yourself with while listening. Nice work.

I always confuse Bytes with Weirs. Listened to Spanners for the first time in a long time last year and it held up pretty good. I must say though, I never felt anything from pre-Dust Black Dog or Plaid like I feel Radio Scarecrow.
