Sparklehorse, The Jayhawks and Gillian Welch all on the same page. Should be in the top 100, but this is SOMB, where super urban cliche dominates, and I accept that.

I had an excellent one a couple weeks back.

I don't know, I think Sparklehorse's ranking is pretty right on (and yes, Monty, I have heard them). Good band, but not top 100 material.

I'm inclined to agree. Sparklehorse has done some really spectacular stuff, but nonetheless, they didn't make my list.

They belong up with where Portishead will rank.

As for the Jayhawks, they are the best alt.country band of the 90's, and yes, better than Wilco at their peak. But alt.country is completely ignored on this forum due it it's urban nature.

Alt.country doesn't get played in Iowa, *metal* does. Also, you'd be surprised at how many fine pieces of ass listen to that band. But hey, enjoy your sausage-fest BO stank metal shows at some sex predators rural basement.

I don't want to get in the middle of this here, but I have yet to meet a Jayhawks fan who also happens to be an attractive woman. That's not a knock on the band, but it just doesn't scream 'hot chick demographic'

Obviously they don't have a huge fanbase, but they do seem to get their share of attractive women. Not only that but I've dated quite a few who loved the band after hearing them. The recent Olson/Louris shows, and the Olson-less Jayhawks shows really did draw more than your standard fare. I've started a few short relationships thanks to agressive hotties handing me their numbers at their shows. Something about liquor and the Jayhawks live relaxes the process. Good times.

Surprised Villalobos came in so (relatively) high. That's awesome. Obviously, he should be way higher, but that's what you get with the rural nature of this forum.

"..I hate it when a nice track is over. I'm addicted to music and what music is giving me, emotionally, without thinking about it, acting on different levels of the brain. And when this is stopping, I’m frustrated, you know? In club music, the surprising moments are very important, but to have the surprising moments you need a certain time of tension. You can’t deliver one surprising moment after another because then it’s boring. So to find context for the surprising moment, you have to find a frame for it. And this frame has to be big. This forces the music not to be like orgasm after the other, really compressed and concentrated: everything is a little bit stretched to be mixed with other stretched music - R.V”

Music has the amazing, if not unique, ability to distort our perception of time and I’ve always bought into RV's understanding of that fact and his ability to play with it and manipulate it.

Yeah. I mean, we could only list 50 artists each, after all. At least be glad they weren't left out of the top 300. That would be embarassing.

I like both Sparklehorse and Patti Smith, but neither would make a list of my 100 favorite artists. James Brown might.

Unrest formed in 1983 at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. They began as an improv instrumental band, taping every practice and never playing the same thing twice. That transformed into solid song structures and pop melodies. Kustom Karnal Blackxploitation (1990) was their metal-ish ode to Black culture and Imperial ffrr (1992) found them returning to their avant garde roots while also focusing on sugary pop.

MARK ROBINSON vocals / guitar (also founder & owner of teenbeat records)

PHIL KRAUTH drums

TIM MORAN vocals / guitar ('83-'86)

DAVE PARK bass ('88-'90)

BRIDGET CROSS vocals / bass ('91-)

Discography
1988 Malcolm X Park LP
1990 Kustom Karnal Blacksploitation LP
1992 Imperial ffrr LP
1992 Isabel Bishop (EP)
1993 Perfect Teeth
1993 Cath Carroll (EP)
1995 BPM LP

edit-Mark & Bridget were getting sick of Phil so they told him they were breaking up but
instead reformed into Air Miami*

"It doesn't really hit you until you see her perform those songs live that they're actually about real people and you could almost see her reliving what caused her to write those songs in her eyes as she's performing. It was one of the most intense concert experiences I've had (keep in mind, I'm like Fiona Fan No. 1) because it felt like she could melt down and cry at any moment." - Midnite_Vulture
