The Sword? What the hell? Nothing against them, but man, what a weird inclusion.
While this thread has been massively entertaining so far (outstanding work by Paul), a good many of the picks have been dead-on trainwrecks.
I guess it's symptomatic of the high-number outliers.

I don't know, I think Sparklehorse's ranking is pretty right on (and yes, Monty, I have heard them). Good band, but not top 100 material.
They belong up with where Portishead will rank.
As for the Jayhawks, they are the best alt.country band of the 90's, and yes, better than Wilco at their peak. But alt.country is completely ignored on this forum due it it's urban nature.

Really interesting so far, enjoying the format a lot.
Its a little late, but here is a little story about me and Low. Alan Sparhawk (sp?) used to work where I'm trying to get a job (my friend says he likes to come and hang out at random and chitchat). I'm going to do something terribly embarrassing if I do get a job there and see him, I'm so excited and can't wait.
Another anecdote about Steve Reich: A music teacher at my schools response to being asked what he thought about Reich: "You're like what, 18? 19? Now is the time in your life to be listening to Steve Reich! Go! Now! LISTEN!! It will be meaningless later!"
To offer some encouragement: Can't wait to see the rest, keep up the good work!

Your theory about the only 1 vote #1 is likely correct. I like Patty Griffin just fine, but I know that her and Chris Whitley among the others at this part of the list tend to have 1 or 2 very vocal partisans on the board and little other support.

I'm obviously somwhat biased, but yeah those 2 from the Fish era..Hogarth he could go in any number of directions. 1994's BRAVE is my favorite record ever, but it's more conceptual; so it often isn't something appreciated right away. SEASON'S END, AFRAID OF SUNLIGHT and 2004's MARBLES (the 2-disc version which is critical) are 3 others that are among the most popular among the majority of their fanbase with Hogarth.

QUOTE (54cermak @ Aug 20 2008, 10:16 AM)
Your theory about the only 1 vote #1 is likely correct.
Yeah, I guess I'll clarify this now that it is out of the way. A number one vote was worth 200 points. Everything from The Sword to Chris Whitley received one vote, which happened to be a number one vote (other than Steve Reich who received four votes that totally to 200 points and everything that is tied comes up in alphabetical order in the spreadsheet with no easy way to change it other than to manually type in all the rank orders which isn't happening). On one hand, I like the way it worked out because it means that everyone's top choice made the list, but on the other hand, you have someone like James Brown who eight people voted for that falls below all the one-vote-wonders. It's too late to do anything about it now, and I doesn't pose any issues to the countdown past #251, so I guess it really isn't that big of a deal. When I post the results from the spreadsheet at the end, hopefully this will make a little more sense.
All right, now that that is taken care of, we can get back to counting down.
