Today's Tom Sawyer
Apparently the Beastie Boys have collaborated with some sportscaster guy and released a single to protest the Beijing Olympics. It's definitely. . .well, interesting. You can check it out here. Does anyone know more about this? I'm surprised Kot and Dero haven't mentioned it.

Really? It's starting to grow on me. It's definitely better than anything on To the 5 Boroughs.

An Open Letter To NYC is one of their best songs ever. Fucking Sonic Reducer, dude!

My God, why didn't I abide? I don't even like the Beastie Boys all that much.

Anyways, up your ass with broken glass, OP.

lol-- I didn't even see there was an actual mp3 under that obnoxious fucking video. People need to market their shit better if that is, in fact, real. Awful.

You're not gonna find a lot of Beastie Boys love here, alas - it is currently fashionable to deny ever liking the Beasties. At least on the SOMB. I'll listen to this in a minute.
Paul
I like the Beastie Boys, a lot trust me, but every time I listen to them, I can't imagine any reason why a female would enjoy them at all.

For the same reason women date guys who act like the Beastie Boys' personas, I would imagine - some women really love that swaggering, snotty kind of confidence.

I honestly can't say I've ever met a female BB fan(aside from singing along with/knowing the obvious singles). Least not that I can recall. Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head are great albums, but you're pretty much right- as I think about it track by track, absolutely no reason for a woman to actively seek out listening to it as far as the lyrics go.

this lyrics argument is ridiculous. women listen to and have been listening to plenty more misogynistic shit than the beasties. there are plenty of female beasties fans, i guarentee it. but still probably more dudes.

hey can you really blame david faustino? he needs to bring the money in from somewhere.

1. This Anti-Chinese song is lame. This guy just raps over an already existing Beastie Boys song (this is from 5 Buroughs, or the first song off the one before it). This is not new, except for activist dude.

2. I know tons of females who love the Beastie Boys. I thought they had addressed the lyrical problem on every album since "Paul's", and there were tons of women rocking out when I saw them at Sasquatch last year.

How "Hip" changes: Right now, it's hip to hate the Beasties and say that they're over. Ten years ago, they were the purveyors of hip and everyone was biting their moves and buying records of the bands/aritsts they endorsed (Beck, Luscious Jackson, ATR, Cibo Matto, etc.)

Of course, I also blame them for the Kid Rock emergence. Not because they helped invent rap/rock; but because of their incredible expose on him in "Grand Royal Magazine"#2 where they went over his long self-made career (this was at least two/three years before that major label shama-lamma-ding-dong song) back when he looked like Vanilla Ice. I think bringing that douche to people's attention was at first a joke, but I think the joke is on them now...

I seriously have that issue right here on my side table.

Yep - addressed said problems to the extent they did what I find nigh-unforgiveable:Went back to the older material and "scrubbed" the offensive lyrics in later concert tours. Prince did the same on the Musicology tour - who wnts to hear "Little red Corvette or "Girls" with politically corrected lyrics? Yech.

they were best when they sang of beer, girls, or the egg-man....
when they became political activists, they lost their appeal..

they de-volved from fun guys i would like to hang out with,
to boring old men whose political science class i would walk out on...

Yeah... no... nice try handy captain...

Don't make fake publicity for yourself at the expense of a group of really talented musicians and emc's already aged reputation.

i hope this isn't the next internet meme to come....

Well, I saw Prince on the Musicology tour and I had to groan when he changed the lyrics in "I Feel 4 U" to "I'm spiritually attracted to you". However, he still did a lot of his sexed-up songs without any changes at all. ("Little Red Corvette", "Cream" etc) The Beasties didn't do a lot of the old songs for a while, but I've seen them do LTI and PB stuff without any changes. So I guess what I'm saying is that the whole "they changed all the old songs up!" story with both has been overblown.
