Anyone else ever play this? I picked it up last week at Best Buy and have been fucking hooked on this shit. Might be the best video game related purchase I've gotten in a long ass time. Seriously, so fucking good.

i watched two kids play at the best buy on clark street. what makes this a game exactly? does the guitar save the world or something?

I played this (or a varation of it) in an arcade a year or so ago. It sucked because I knew I was hitting the "notes" just right and at the right time, but somehow I kept missing. And I play (er, used to play) DDR, so I thought I had enough rhythm to at least pass this game on easy. But no.
HewlettsDaughter
Mar 19 2006, 11:58 PM
its pretty much DDR but with a guitar. all rhythm based. hit the notes as they come up on the screen by strumming and pressing the cooresponding color "string" button.
i cant quite explain the addiction of the game. i guess its just retardedly addicting somehow. i can get some backup on this....waiting for deja andy to come to my side on this one.

That's Gitaroo Man, which uses a regular controller. But what a game!

Guitar Hero is indeed amazing. I got back into it today and can feel the rock juice flowing through my veins once more. Looking forward to a duel with Derek.
Undo - What you played was likely Guitar Freaks, which this game draws inspiration from. Guitar Hero is said to be much better, though... and if you have rhythm, you'll do well at this. I've never played guitar in my life, but I'm a drummer, and I got good at this game rather quickly.
And Gitaroo-Man... I didn't think it was the greatest thing around. Even though it's been reprinted, used copies still go for $40. Insanity.

I got Guitar Hero for Christmas and I love it. About two months ago, I was going through a period where I didn't have much school work to do, so I ended up playing the game for about 2 hours a night. I had to take a break from it for a couple weeks because I would close my eyes and see the notes coming down the "screen."
Rumor is that there is going to be a full-fledged Guitar Hero 2 along with a bunch of "theme" packs.
Andyroo
Mar 20 2006, 02:52 AM
Not rumor; fact! RedOctane said they have "five or six" Guitar Hero titles in the works for release by next summer. The story was up on 1up.com about two weeks back.

If I played this game once, chances are pretty good that I'd never be able to stop, so it's probably best that my video game knowledge never advanced past 1997.
Andyroo
Mar 20 2006, 10:21 PM
It won't teach you how to play real guitar, but it's pretty simple to pick up and play. When the note hits the buttom of the screen, hold the corresponding fret button and strum/tap the strum bar.

He also exaggerates. I should request to see it in person.

so my roommate has been hooked on this lately. only thing is he is probably the stiffest person in the world. he leans against out beds as if he were too cool for school when he plays.
i, on the other hand, nearly broke my ankle the other night jumping off of my desk at the end of a big solo and then bumping into one of my friends.
it was some frantic shredding.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but he was probably playing Guitar Freaks, which is the inspiration for Guitar Hero. The interface is quite different though, as are the song selections. I think Guitar Hero actually has more buttons, too.

I so love this game. I bought it for my 8 yr old son for Christmas. I almost didn't buy it for him because I thought it would be to hard for him and he would grow disinterested in it. Boy was I wrong. He seriously rocks at this game. Lately he has been taking great pride in beating my high scores. It is so extreme that when Iron Man (a song in the game) comes on the radio, he plays air guitar and mimics the notes with his fingers like he is playing the game. Huge bonus - when I want him to do something all I have to do is promise that I'll let him play and he'll do anything.

I played this at the Best Buy on Clark, and if you can play guitar for real it's actually harder to get the hang of at first. Namely, because the "notes" you're suppsoed to play aren't exactly accraute with how the song really goes. For example, "I Love Rock & Roll" is one of the songs you can play. And if you know how to play the song on a real guitar, the guitar hero version is vastly different in its rhythms. Otherwise, it is indeed like crack. And in the 10 mintues I played, I kicked some decent ass.
Andyroo
Mar 23 2006, 02:53 AM
That's true, especially on the lower difficulties (since it's so basic). Try out the harder versions, they may be more similar to the real thing.
HewlettsDaughter
Mar 23 2006, 12:11 PM
Seriously, the harder ones become more and more of a bitch as the thing goes on. But they're so great.
Dude, we need our gee-tar battle and soon. We shall discuss this during today's buttraping midterm.

Mar 23 2006, 03:47 PM
Absolutely. It must be done...
Also, I'm considering writing a story about college students and Guitar Hero either for the Flyer or for my Feature Writing class... trying to figure out if it's worth it, and if so, which venue would be best for it.

You need two controllers, although I think it is possible to use a regular PS2 (but I'm not sure how much fun that would be). On Guitar Hero 1, what happens is you switch off playing parts of the songs and in a few parts are both playing the same thing. It's not as cool as it could be, but it's still a lot of fun just to have two people playing at the same time. It really sounds like they're trying to make that aspect of the game better in the next one with the interview saying that they'll have one person playing lead and another playing a seperate rhythm or a bass part.

You said it. 15 years of playing guitar and I am HORRIBLE at this game, just awful. My girlfriend, on the other hand, who has just barely learned how to play three chords on an acoustic guitar, figured it out in about 5 minutes. One of my bandmates has it at his house and they go nuts on it, going head-to-head and everything.

Guitar Hero II arrives with a new track list, new venues and additional play modes – including the ability to transform the original Guitar Hero SG Controller into a rhythm, lead or bass guitar. The November issue of The Official PlayStation Magazine (OPM) will have a GH II demo on its coverdisk, and while no games modes are revealed yet, it will have 4 songs : Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue, Strutter by Kiss, YYZ by Rush, and You Really Got Me by Van Halen.

So after I found out I passed the Kentucky Bar yesterday, I decided to reward myself by buying a PS2 and Guitar Hero. I haven't had a console video game system since like 1990, but I've heard so many great things about this game that I decided to do it. I played for about an hour last night, playing the first 8 songs on easy and hit about 95% of the notes. Very fun. My 7 year old daughter is dying to play.
