phlowtron
i 2nd that request for alexis taylor's album (rubbed out). tried to purchase and some weird shenanigans popped up.

rubbed out.

first listen, and this is sounding good. not fully developed obvs. but still nice in a low-key kinda way.

not my link.
SonicAlligator
Being a huge fan of Hot Chip, I was pretty excited when I heard about this album. The song "Baby" feels like Alexis singing over a Strokes instrumental. I like it a lot. Unfortunately for some of the songs, I feel like he is just pushing buttons on a giant synthesizer. I really hope he didn't spend a lot of time on this, and I highly doubt he actually did. "Fireworks" and "Ruffles" are garbage. "Coming Up", "I'm Not A Robber", and "The Drums of Chwodes" are sweet.
UselessRocker
Rubbed Out is good, but really slight. If you like when Hot Chip do their soulful-ballad thing as I do, then it's enjoyable. Just expect it to be even more minimalist than usual.
SonicAlligator
Completely agree.

what a week for leaks!! can't wait to get home from work.
Blonde Almond
Outside of a few great songs, their albums have never held together for me very well. But the couple that I've heard from this newest one are excellent, so I have high expectations for it.
Minutes Late
"Brothers" reminds me of '80s, post-Waters Pink Floyd.

*waits*
HRTX
Yeah this album!!!! Glorious melodies and the vocals are better than ever. This band has probably abandoned whatever 'cool' image they might have had but they're not really geeky anymore either. They're just really earnest, (in)sincere, and a bit campy.

"Slush" sounds like a lost Macca ballad. "Thieves In The Night" ... no words to describe it yet. Bangs.

Vocals are so smooooth.
stephen thomas erlewine
second time through this album and it hasn't set in yet. but even with cursory, superficial attention i can tell that this is a special record. easily their most mature. or 'mature.' either way, i think i might grow to love this album. definitely getting a bronski beat vibe off several of the tracks. and i feel better is my song of the day.

i do wish there were a song that hit me as hard as we're looking for a lot of love. never heard much affinity for that song, but i think it's their crowning achievement to date. they can do slow jams and should do them more often.
Papa's Delicate Condition
Man, what's wrong with these guys? "Brothers" is one of the worst songs I've heard in awhile. Hot Chip is so off the mark in unoriginal ways too often.
monotony
Hmmmm. Not sure about this yet. The first four tracks are all slices of really outstanding dance pop. But then from 5 onwards it's all a bit "when is Take it In going to come on already". I mean, the slow stuff is nice enough, but I want more bangers. Where's the "One Pure Thought" that just takes you by surprise down the tail end of Made In The Dark?

Of course I will listen to it more over the next few weeks and will probably be extolling "pop AOTY" etc in say a month's time.
faraway
This is an excellent album. May even surpass The Warning for me. Here's my breakdown:

Great: One Life Stand, Take It In, Thieves in the Night, I Feel Better, Hand Me Down Your Love
Good: Keep Quiet, We Have Love
Meh: Brothers, Slush

needs a re-up faaaaaast please
Liffey
i do not care for hot chip, but this album is really doing it for me for some reason.

edit: actually I just got to Alley Cats, nice song, but yeah I'm ready for them to kick it into high gear again.

Fantastic!!

damn i didn't even know this thing leaked. 8.4 bnm on pfork all of a sudden.

"The band's split personality was in full effect on Made in the Dark, which flitted between heart-on-sleeve songs like "We're Looking for a Lot of Love" and "One Pure Thought" and nebbishy hip-shakers like "Shake a Fist" and "Bendable Poseable". If you wanted a record of the former without the latter, well you're in luck, because that's basically what you have here."

i remember wishing all of made in the dark was like that. the title track, lot of love, and one pure thought were my favorite songs off it.

It came out in Europe last week. Made #11.
Blonde Almond
8.4 seems about right, although I think that Brothers and Slush are the weakpoints. Still the most cohesive and enjoyable album they've put out, for me anyway.

this is true but I still don't think it's a great album. More often than not, the ballads meander too much for me. "Hand Me Down Your Love" is incredible though, that sweet little outro just makes me melt.

I actually enjoy Brothers quite a bit, although I wish I could erase that XBox line.

Yeah, after deleting Brothers and Slush, I listened to this album quite a bit. I don't think there will be a better album this year with worse cover art.
stephen thomas erlewine
whatever the score, that's a hell of a write-up.

One Life Stand is their most consistent and most complete record, but it's missing an A-list single on par with "Boy From School", "Over and Over", or "Ready for the Floor".

This is pretty much my impression, after only a few listens to it. Good review.
Minutes Late
I'd rather have an inconsistent album with 3 awesome highs than a consistent, never-great album. That's such dumb praise. Especially from people who constantly proclaim the death of the album.

Only Hot Chip's first album is worse, and at least that had Crap Kraft Dinner. "Missing an A-list single": isn't that the entire f'ing point? Who wants to hear an album with no great songs? I love this band, but the new record is merely good. (And still better than Pink Floyd.)
st. park
i'm surprised at the positive feedback over this record. i can't get into this thing at all, and it's not just the lack of any standout singles. crappy hooks, sonically boring.. man wtf happened to this band?

hahahhaha. I love posts like these. They date faster than an egg left in the Arizona sun. Hot Chip is an important band at the peak of their powers. hahahahhahaha

If there was every evidence of the changing tastes of this board (as started being discussed in the Josh Ritter thread), it is Hot Chip.

The board was Hot Chip central during The Warning.

The board clung to the quality singles off of Made in the Dark, but discussion was far less frantic.

Hot Chip put out a much better record than Made in the Dark, receives great reviews from almost all major indie publications, but no one really discusses it. Weird.

I primarily like their singles, and I listen to The Warning every few months (skipping three or four tracks), but this is a great (not brilliant). This is the type of record where I think the majority of the reviews have been spot-on. And for the record, why would anyone not want a consistently good record over an average record with a few great tracks? If that is the case, just by the singles and call it a day.

Because the idea is to get as many great tracks on the album as you can(or at least it used to be). I'd rather shoot for greatness and have three songs remembered from an album than nice but ultimately forgettable background music. I think there is a recent trend by bands to not take risks in an effort to get all their pins lined up in a row to look pretty for the music blog/metacritic bowling alley of shame. Places like metacritic have actually hurt music. People are building albums specifically for it and for year end lists. The problem is the gatekeeprs don't consider big ideas worthy, or they consider them as "bloat". Nice, inoffensive background music is the name of the game.

For an album with no good singles, the two singles on this album ("Take It In", "One Life Stand") are pretty damn good.

Well, if anything I have felt that the trend is the opposite. Very few bands seem to take this track, an album full of good to great songs without any huge dips. Most bands have three or four excellent tracks and then they pad it out with a bunch of "meh," songs. At least that is how most new bands seem to do it.

they're gonna have a helluva 'greatest hits' compendium in the years to come.

This clicked for me at the weekend. Oh yes.

eckie comedown?
ClashMusic
Hasn't really clicked with me yet, though a few decent spins have seen it go up in my estimation. Bizarrely, I probably prefer the new Joe Goddard album - really lush electronica, reminds me of AFX 'Ambient Works'.

Still love the band though, even if they do have a weird love for Susan Boyle.... huh.gif

The board has changed in the last few years. Go back through this thread and you'll see a lot of pro-Hot Chip folks that aren't posting here anymore.

I'm enjoying the new one. Nothing really stood out on the first couple of listens, but I don't think you can say there aren't any "stand-out tracks". For most people, it'll probably be "Brothers" or the title track.
solace
while i like the new album a lot, i think the vocals on this one are a bit too sugary at times for my taste.

They're back!

Waves Within
Recognize the vocal melody from somewhere. Anyway, it's really good, probably the best song they've ever done.
