I received the Google G1 phone last night. Supposedly another iPhone "killer" - which it's not.

BUT......

It is pretty cool. I'm still get accustomed to some of the functionality and features, but I like it. The Google Maps Compass View is fucking awesome.

Hips
what's the monthly charge for the service that goes along?
Stan Gable
$35 for unlimited everything.

I've read some reviews. Consensus seems to be that it's very good, but not currently as good as the iphone. That said, the reviews also point out that Google's apps and (more) open source attitude than apple could make the phone pretty killer down the line.

Question, I haven't read much about the media capabilities. How are they? I know it only has 1 gig of memory, but it's expandable. Any idea how much, and what does it take (I'm assuming micro sd)? Im sure I could get these answers elsewhere, but I'm lazy.
Stan Gable
There are already some openapps in the market to download for the G1. Most are pretty decent, from what I've seen.

The media capabilities are nice. The music player is superior to the iPhone, IMO. The microSD is expandable to 8G, currently.

Typing is a little awkward, due to the base of the phone having actual buttons and a trackball. But it's just a comfort issue coming off of the TMobile Dash.

Being on the 3G network is pretty slick. Browsing is speedy.

In somewhat related news, the Blackberry Bold was finally confirmed for release TODAY on election day, at $300. I'll be getting it, although likely not on release day.

I like BB phones, for the most part. The main issue I have with BB is the BES, which runs alongside MS Exchange. I believe, though, that with Exchange pushing out email, now, you can do without the BES. That would be nice.

Whoa??? $300 may have been competitive a year ago when the iphones were still selling in the $500 range, but now? That's a horrible price point (although I know nothing about the phone).

I should say $35 for unlimited data and text. Your minutes cost extra.

I have 1500 minutes, free nights and wknds, unlimited data and text for $123 out the door.

Oh.

For a second there, I had a boner.

I don't know, I think it was pretty much expected. Keep in mind, the Bold is not really BB's answer to the iPhone - at least, that's my take on it. I believe that's going to be the Storm (which you've probably seen ads for). That one's got the touch screen, etc. I view the Bold as an upgrade to previous BB phones, like my 8700, and it's going to be a serious upgrade to that. And I paid over $300 for that one. The Storm is currently being "sold" for free in other countries in order to gain market share on the iPhone, so that question is whether that would happen here.

But, I do see an article out there today raising your concerns, too:

One thing that will keep me from getting the Storm is that it will be exclusive to Verizon, and I'm on A&T with my wife. So if I get one of these, it will only be the Bold.

wow, so it's almost $100 for your voice plan? In the great white north, we get unlimited voice/text with tons of LD for around $25/month, all included. And 6GB of data on 3G for $30. All I have is a 3-year old phone with a simple voice plan, but jeez... that seems outrageous.

Yeah, but if I moved the Canada I wouldn't have anyone I'd want to talk to there.
