Os Mutantes Reunion Coming to U.S.

Kati Llewellyn reports:
Last month, Brazilian psych-rock legends Os Mutantes announced their first performance since 1973. Pretty rad, especially since even Kurt Cobain was previously unable to bring these guys back together. (Unfortunately we mean "guys" literally here, as brothers Sergio and Arnaldo Baptista, and drummer Ronaldo "Dinho" Leme, are set to go on without original member Rita Lee.)

As previously reported, Os Mutantes' first reunion show will take place in London in May, as part of the Barbican's "Tropicália: A Revolution in Brazilian Culture" festival. Pitchfork has just learned that the reunion has been extended to two more shows, in New York and Los Angeles this July.

The L.A. show at the Hollywood Bowl also features the Flaming Lips and Thievery Corporation. How awesome is that?

Bat macumba hey!:

05-22 London, England - the Barbican
07-21 New York, NY - Webster Hall
07-23 Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Bowl *

holy balls, i really hope i'm in nyc this summer.
Rad Monkey
Shit, now I have to go to NYC or LA.
Jenny Penny
This reunion is worthless without Rita Lee.

Come out to LA, the Hollywood Bowl's nicer than Webster Hall. How freaked out by cheap HO-tels are you? You can get a place within walking distance of the Bowl that's really cheap, you can even get "Nap Rates" if you're not staying long.

i really want to believe, but how could this gig possibly not be disappointing?

particularly without rita lee.

oh, please do not get these ideas in my head.

i'm not even that thrilled about this. i'd rather they just leave well enough alone, but i guess they have bills to pay. that being said, if they play in chicago, i will go, even if there is no rita.

33 years since the last performance? Can they still play?
I've seen some sad, saaaad performances from veteran acts on SNL...

Alright, I'm sure everyone is well aware of this by now but I didn't see it mentioned in this thread and I was very surprised not to - you all know they are playing Pitchfork Fest this summer, right?
Rad Monkey
Yes, I made a post on it in the pitchfork thread.

Freddie Freelance

It's on the metro web site. july 11th, 2007. $26 in advance, on sale saturday. no word on if they'll have the same vocalist back from last year's pitchfork. i'd prefer to hear the songs sung in portuguese this time 'round...

yeah, that was pretty disappointing at pitchfork, especially because i was surrounded by people speaking portuguese that were a little baffled by the songs being in english.

This one... she knows.

Well it's a Caetano Veloso song originally performed by Gal Costa...

Pitchfork set was awesome, probably the best set I saw last year. I'm hesitant to go to this though, since lightning rarely strikes twice
