Not my favorite Pink Floyd album by any stretch, but I listened to the live disc today and was really enjoying it. Thing is, I bought the original Capitol Records version on CD before they came out with the remastered discs in the late 90's, with the expanded artwork and such. The only two PF discs I don't have remastered versions of are Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother. I'm considering buying the remasters, at least of one, if not both. Has anyone heard both versions? Are the remasters worth buying the album all over again?

The Ummagumma one sounds pretty nice; I seemed to notice a bit of an improvement over the original CD but I hadn't heard the original CD very much at that point. With Ummagumma at least the packaging for the remastered version is pretty awesome, so I'd get it anyway. Can't help you with Atom Heart Mother because I've never heard the original Capitol CD, only the 1994 remaster and now I just listen to the MFSL.

The remasters for Umma and AHM are both better than the originals. I had the gold remaster of AHM at one point, until some idiot spilled whiskey and bongwater on it.

Yeah, I think one of my biggest problems with these albums might just be the old, thin-sounding versions I have. When I bought the 90's remaster of Piper, I was amazed at how "up close" and clear everything was. Despite the source material being older, it was much more a joy to listen to than ATM or Ummagumma. The noise floor on the live disc is absurdly loud, almost like listening to a cassette tape.

Yeah, despite hating the thought of buying albums over again, I just might have to for these. Especially since my appreciation for this era of PF has grown.

There is a big improvement on the remasters for sure. This was the AHM I had:

,a 1994 gold remaster. I should try and see if I can find a torrent of this since I did in fact pay for it at one time. I really like the album except for the last song, which I find tedious(especially thje mawing of food).

Yes, very influential era.

BTW, here's a really cool performance of "The Amazing Pudding", which was the early version of "Atom Heart Mother". This rendition is considerably different. The performance was 69 or 70, forget which.
