I didn't realize Linklater had anything worth seeing outside of dazed and confused. Bad News Bears was ok but unneccessary. Use this thread to discuss the awesomeness of SubUrbia or tell me whether Slacker is worth seeing.

Well, it's been six or seven years since I saw it. But as I recall it doesn't go anywhere. It's just cliched pointless teens exchanging dull dialogue and doing nothing. Features Ribisi's floppy wang IIRC.
I'd appreciate some effort if you're going to make a film on such well-covered ground.
Movie also lacks an ending.

you need to rewatch it! Its none of those things. The dialogue isn't circular wankery a la ksmith, its actually very integral to the story itself, themes of alienation but also opportunity and disillusionment etc etc

This was the only time he hasn't bothered me! His acting in this is surprisingly restrained and realistic vs. his annoying spaz-styles in crappy schlock like that movie with jack black and the guy from american pie.

Yeah, that movie came out before I started hating Zahn, too.
Damn good flick...but the soundtrack trumps it. One of the finest collections of 90s alternative/indie rock around.

You're talking about Saving Silverman, and I actually like that movie despite Zahn's presence.

Waking Life is pretty essential late-night viewing, imo. Not mind expanding or anything but it says some interesting things and presents them in an interesting manner, so it works for me. Slacker is good but more influential than enjoyable--far too episodic and unrealistic to really cohere into much of anything. Dazed and Confused is easily one of my ten favorite movies ever.

Whoa, this thread is really wierd because I used to own that soundtrack. I bought it when it first came out and it was the soundtrack to my last two years of high school. Then later I sold it.
I just ordered it on half.com about two weeks ago and it came in the mail this past weekend.
I really disliked much of the movie. Agreed about the ending. I guess it's based on a play and I could see it working better in that context.
This is all coming from someone who's never seen
Dazed & Confused so I can't really comment on how this weighs in among the rest of Linklater's slacker movies. Yet to see
Tape, the
Before movies, or
The Newton Boys (don't know if anyone has actually seen that last one, though).

wow, when scanning my mind for the highlights of Linklater's work, I totally forgot about Tape and both Before movies, despite the fact that all three would probably rank in my top 100 of the last decade or so. Tape in particular is mad underrated.
I did remember about The Newton Boys though, hah. I wonder if I'll live long enough to see revisionist theory claim that as Linklater's lost masterpiece.

Dazed was on the other day. I found myself looking at all the cars and drooling. Am I old or what? "That black and white Chevelle is awesome!"

best part of the movie is Zahn running backwards into the parked car, shot from the POV of the kids sitting in the back seat. that's the peak, and the rest of the movie is like death valley.

Didn't Linklater also direct "School of Rock"? Great film, and a great kids film that doesn't pander to kids.

Same, but I think I caught a bit of it on TV the other night. Does it have Matthew McWhatshisname and some skinny football player kid? What I saw of it was lame. Movies, you continue to disappoint me. Step it up.
yeah mathew mcshaunesyobrien is in it. give it a chance though. it's not great but it's pretty fuckin entertaining. oh and it contains a foxy Parker Posey to boot.

Things that people that hate Dazed and Confused also probably hate:
1. Being young
2. Having cool friends
3. Making fun of Ben Affleck
4. Getting drunk
5. Foghat

Maybe I have to see Dazed and Confused again. I saw it years ago and don't really recall liking it at all, but maybe if its on cable or something and I have nothing else better to do I'll check it out. Everyone seems to love it, but I remember being really unimpressed. But, again, that was years ago.
Slacker is massively overrated. I can appreciate its influence and impact on the indie film world and everything and its technique, but its just really, really fucking boring and difficult to get into. One of those movies you "admire" more than "enjoy," I guess.
School of Rock was freaking great, though.

School of Rock was pretty disappointing. Some cool musical parts but the plot was basically just a standard template "loser gets redeemed by doing something meaningful" semi-romantic comedy. I expected better from Linklater.

I already praised Waking Life in another thread, but ill give it props again here for being awesome, in a post-structuralist kinda way of course. God, if only reading Lacan was as much fun...
ps. im also excited for Linky's upcoming A Scanner Darkly, despite the combined wretchedness of Reeves and Downey Jr.

I really appreciate Linklaters existence in the world of hollywood film.
