We voted for this stupid Black Kids song last year.

Then again, I think I was one of the voters for that EP so...

I asked Paul about this. I guess we voted for the EP last year. Ironically, I didn't vote for the EP last year, but had "I'm Not Gonna Teach..." in my top ten. Catchy song, and I prefer the LP version to the EP version.

But it certainly was no "A-Punk." wink.gif

Thank god that Death Cab song isn't higher. I can't stand that shit at all.

Good call. I don't hate the song, it just really shouldn't be any higher.

5 minutes shorter would have made it rank higher. wink.gif

the single version WAS that short tho wink.gif

SOMB Says: kə-'riz-mə

She performs with a kazoo hanging around her neck.
She sounds like a quirkier version of Robyn.
Her name sounds like the Norwegian word for "happy".
She hears her song "Complaint Department" playing in a record store and suddenly starts dancing right there (true story).
During a chorus she bangs a cymbal with a glittery drumstick like a hyper little kid ignorant of the insane noise she's making.
No, wait, she sounds like a Swedish girl obsessed with Tom Waits.
Her breakthrough single is nothing but synths and mandolin.
She performs with her band in a public toilet, running water and clinking the faucet with a spoon as a means of percussion.
She puts not one, but two spoken word pieces on her debut album.
She preludes a song with a ludicrous cover of "Can I Kick It".
She then goes and covers "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa".
The bulk of her performance on Conan O'Brien is sung through a megaphone.
She wears MC Hammer pants in her videos.
She writes a song built around a stupidly simple, four-note riff and comes up with a strange, slightly awkward chorus that sounds lifted from a schoolyard song.
She writes the inexplicable lyric, "I'm workin' to make butter for my piece of bun."

And she gets away with it all. – Saskadelphia

Now I am intrigued. Thanks, Sask.

Ah, Fleet Foxes. The inbred offspring of MMJ and Midlake.

Yeah, when I first heard it I thought it was a MMJ outtake, but it grew on me.

Huh??? laugh.gif

GREAT JOB PAUL & BLURBERS....and special love to all posters in this thread for not bogging down the list too much with extraneous nagging and personal bullshit.

thanks again Paul..I do think an EPs list should be done next year. There's a lot of great EPs that many people will never check out due to not placing. I don't recall a year that I got into as many addictive EPs...especially by unknown/new bands.

I don't think enough people listen to a large enough quantity of EPs to make this work separate from the other polls. And there's a lot of bleed-over between singles and EPs anyway (I mean, EPs are singles, so...). There would be a lot of overlapping votes. I don't think it really solves the problem.

you may be right not fixing the problem..but EPs..are not really singles. When you have 5-8 songs on a release, it ain't a single. And when you have new artists who put out something that is a collection of songs that only goes 20-35mins in length..but none of those songs are released individually (or given radio/video play/made a video for)..that's not a single, it's an EP. There is a difference.

I mean if no poll is setup, than some kind results in this poll should be tabbed just for EPs..or imo a better idea..for every 10 singles or whatever that you vote for, you have to vote for at least 1 EP. This list gets flooded with singles, so even for the people who do vote for EPs, they get buried.

Some people don't include EPs in their Albums list for this very reason; but wtf is the point if said EPs just get buried in this poll anyway?..a separate poll would fix that.
Mitchell
I've already pointed this out; Any EP that is eligible for the singles poll differs from the 'normal' singles on it by not having the b-sides split across 2 formats/disc and maybe having more of a theme.

EP's are singles. If they are 35 mins long and have 8 tracks they are mini-albums and go on the albums poll.
Duff.

The majority of EPs are not that long. I can't remember any eight-song EPs from 2008. I think the average among EPs that I voted for is four to five, which isn't really too different from singles that pretty frequently include about three tracks (like a b-side and one or two remixes).

I have to say it seems like a sort of arbitrary distinction to vote for a 35 minute EP in an EP poll and a 25-30 minute album (of which they were a number in 2008) in an album poll. As much as I don't like it in some specific circumstances, it makes more practical sense to just group those longer EPs in with albums.

I don't understand what this means. People would be forced to vote for EPs? Many voters just don't listen to any.

And there's a lot of overlap between EPs and singles. Would you be fine with Hot Chip's Ready For the Floor single and Ready For the Floor EP toping the respective polls for these two formats when they're pretty similar in content?

How many people do you think would participate? We had 68 people in the singles poll; not bad, but not a huge number. Many of those people made their singles lists from music videos and tracks off of albums they heard. Relatively few are hearing more than a couple EPs each year. Even if it made sense to do such a poll, there would be a short lists from relatively few people.

It was released as a digital single on October 20th?
Duff.
I would not call Saffron Revolution or whatever catchy pop music.

caley
It's not catchy, nor pop music, at all, nor was this a poll on catchy pop music.

What it is, is a monumental monster of a song that is among the most amazing pieces of music I've heard all year that had a single release.
Pavement Ist Rad
That's not what it is aiming for, no.

EDIT: Yeah, Caley worded it better.
Pavement Ist Rad
"HAPPY HOUSE" IS WAY TOO LONG FOR RADIO PLAY AND DOESN'T HAVE VOCALS PRESENT IN ENOUGH OF THE SONG, WAAAAHHHHH, I'M DUFF.
Duff.
Haha.

Perhaps it's a grower. It can stay on my iPod for another couple days.

Based on the recommendation of Caley and Pavement ist Rad.

Play at night really loud with some magic mushrooms.

Be the grizzly.

I found the song really opened up for me after I did as Bruegel suggested and took it on a walk. Nothing more amazing than having this play over headphones and having it soundtrack your surroundings.

This Paramore song hurts my ears. iPod-engineered rock at its worst.

Sorry I'm late to the festivities, but undo: you're such an eye (ear?) opener. The mastering party was a couple of years ago.

Paul, kudos for a job well done.

With this number one and last year's number one it's apparent I'd find many a Sombie on the dance floor.

ugh. I wish I voted. some awful shit in the top 10...way too much fucking Weezer. When did this board fall back in love with Weezer?

and the two T.I. singles are way low ... and "Lollipop" at #20?!?! Man, that was the summer song.

Weezer's Red Album is a resurgence to their glory days. Their last album was meh IMO, but Red brings the goods

Are you agreeing with me or did I just get dunk'd?

Listen to the whole list in order and whichever way you choose to play it, the back-to-back transition between Fennesz and Paramore is pretty shocking.
Duff.
For some reason the default volume for the Paramore song is higher than every other song. If you put it back to center on iTunes, it's fine.

Of course, Fennesz is barely audible, so there's that too.

Just a gentle rib, undo.

In the grand scheme of things I agree, but I kind of expect pop-rock/emo to be super-compressed. Maybe that in itself is a sad indictment of the modern music landscape. I have to admit to amusement of the link leading to 'loudness war'; a move perhaps less revelatory than you had intended.

As for the comparison, I wouldn't know: I listen to the Fennesz on my record player wink.gif

I completely don't get the amount of Weezer apologists on the SOMB. Terrible album, and pretty awful singles. But they could record themselves throwing shit at each other like monkeys and a lot of you would be like 'OMG! TOP TEN SINGLE FO' SHO'!'

But otherwise, fantastic list.
